Sochan ranks 3rd in BBall Index isolation defense metric

Just more evidence that Sochan has actually been pretty good this year. I think it’s been hard for people to realize how good he’s been. He doesn’t make a lot of plays defensively and obviously outside of Wemby we’ve struggled defensively, but I’ve said all year Sochan has been good just getting over screens, sticking with his man, and making them work for their shot. When you consider the variety of assignments he gets, just the idea that he makes them work can be valuable. Look no further than that Brunson game. I think that’s what this stat captures and why I think Sochan is a keeper.

  1. Completely agree with sochan’s defense being underrated but iso defense is a really bad metric lol. One on one defense really doesn’t matter, switchability is everything nowadays. Which sochan does have.

  2. The DEPM metric shows Sochan playing elite defense as well. First 20 or 30 games of the season (the “PG Experiment”) Sochan had a -0.2 DEPM which was in the 5th percentile meaning 95% of the league was doing better than him. Since the “experiment” ended he has shot up to +2.0 DEPM in which that number alone puts him in the 70th percentile. Nevermind that astounding turnaround in that short of time shows that Jeremy has elite level defense.

Why I can’t help but shake my head when I see someone say “Mamu is a better player than Jeremy”
