Inside The Raptors: Should the Raptors target Toronto’s Edey in draft?

Inside The Raptors: Should the Raptors target Toronto’s Edey in draft?

  1. The first three comments being “no”, “maybe” and “yes” sum up my answer to the Edey question very well.

  2. I mean, obviously he’s worth a second-round pick.

I’m guessing he goes somewhere in the early twenties though, and there’s more viable players to use the Pacers pick on.

  3. If he falls to the end of the 1st or the 2nd round, sure. In the lottery, you’d have to be insane. Even in a really weak draft.

  4. If the Raptors get relegated to the NCAA, then definitely yes. Otherwise, maybe. You can’t teach size and against undersized teams, he could be a matchup nightmare for opponents, same as he is at the college level. There are bound to be other games where he is a liability out there, so I don’t know how you fairly value a player that could be great or terrible depending on matchups.

  5. I hope Edey overcomes his doubters and has a solid NBA career, but I feel like he’d be an absolutely terrible fit with Darko’s offence, and with Scottie’s skill set.

  6. Flier with a late first? I feel like you could do worse for a potential backup big.

…will I have flashbacks to Rafael Araujo if we draft Edey too high? Yes. Yes I will.

  7. After reading through another Edey thread on r/nba_draft, it occurred to me that they are the most toxic discussions with the least range in opinion I’ve ever read. His critics say, ‘everyone says he’s a lottery pick but I just don’t see it… he’ll probably end up being a 12 minutes guy off the bench who’ll struggle to guard the P&R’. His supporters say, ‘everyone says he doesn’t belong in the NBA, but absolutely he could come off the bench and give teams solid minutes just with his post offense.’

And really opinions aren’t that different; they’re just glass-half-empty/glass-half-full takes on the same scouting report! There seems to be a pretty solid consensus on his likely NBA role, but the disagreement seems to primarily be around what that makes his draft value.

Sure there’s some outlier opinions who think he’ll never play in the NBA, or think he’ll be a star, but those are relatively rare.

Anyway, I’m definitely rooting for him to succeed, but don’t really like his fit with the Raptors; but he’s got enough value I’d definitely take him at #31 if he’s still there and we don’t draft another C with a first-rounder.

  8. Short answer: No.

    Long answer: Nooooooooooo!

Ok, I’m being facetious. It’s not that I don’t think that Edey could be successful. But he would need to be on a team like Purdue that builds around him, and Edey is not going to fit Darko’s offense and he’s not going to complement Scottie. So I hope Edey has a successful career, but I just don’t think he fits the Raptors.

  9. Late first or seconds are fine, but not higher picks. Anyone comparing him to other big men busts forget that none of those other big men were 2x player of the year. You cant just look at the guy as a big man and say he’s a bust like boban. This guys definitely has skills, otherwise every 7 4 big man would dominate at college but that’s not the case. Regardless, I am super interested to see how he pans out whether on the Raptors or not

  10. Most mocks I’ve seen have him going to the Pelicans in the 1st round as a replacement for Jonas V

  11. I don’t like that every time there is a Canadian in the league or the draft, everyone wants the raptors to take them.

  12. We need a backup/bench centre and especially depth at the five very badly. Kelly Olynyk is not a centre and provides poor rim protection.

Edey is very mobile for his size and would be very useful whenever Jak gets hurt and is out for an extended period of time.

  13. Realistically he will play in the nba for 5-10 minutes a game. Thats not worth any draft picks.

    So no

  14. I wouldn’t mind it. I trust our player development system. We can get him to knock down long shots easy. As long as the shooting mechanics are there (which they are) it should be light work

  15. Honestly our C depth sucks. You can’t teach size and we have that Pacers pick. I’d scoop him with that. I don’t think it’d be a reach. Work on his flexibility so he isn’t so lumbering, and you have a pretty impressive force down low. If it works out well you’ve got a Centre on the timeline, and if it doesn’t you used a low pick in a weak draft on a kid who was both dominant in college and homegrown. At worst it’s a bummer.

If he’s there with that Detroit pick in the 2nd 100% take him. But I’d take him at 20.

  16. I need someone to explain Edey in NHL terms, is this like the 31 teams passing on Debrincat because he’s too small and then he goes on to score 40 goals

  17. I’m fine with taking him in the second round. I’m a big fan of CanCon.

But you’d be crazy to take him in the first.

  18. The hate towards this local kid is weird. He would be a good fit, just don’t expect him to be the saviour.
