Matthews was never going to Arizona. He loves the spotlight and he knows that you don’t get to hang out with celebrities and get your face on the cover of a video game twice if you play in Tempe or Glendale or Scottsdale or wherever the hell they are that isn’t Phoenix. If he’s ever going to Arizona it’ll be on a Spezza deal at the very end of his career and by the time that comes there’ll probably be another NHL team in Arizona.
What rumors? He signed an extension this season. It’s just talking points.
Don’t worry the talk will start again when Arizona gets an expansion franchise which will come around the time his extension will expire. If the handshake agreement with the Yotes ownership that they get first dibs on one for five years is really a thing.

You can always trust Toronto Maples Leafs fans to come up with the most ridiculous rumours. And I always thought this was amongst the most ludicrous I’ve heard in my 30 years as a fan.
There was almost zero chance that Matthews was ever going to go play in some shitty small market to go completely unnoticed within the sports community and never win the Stanley Cup.
I’m not saying he’ll play his whole career in Toronto. But he sure as hell isn’t leaving just to go to some small market where 99 out of 100 people he runs into wouldn’t even recognize him.
