[Leafs] We’ve signed defenceman Nicolas Mattinen to a one-year, two-way contract beginning in 2024-25

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that the hockey club has signed defenceman Nicolas Mattinen to a one-year, two-way contract beginning in 2024-25. The NHL value of the contract is worth $775,000.

Mattinen, 26, skated in 52 games with the Straubing Tigers (DEL) this season. The 6’5, 215-pound defenceman lead the league in points by a defenceman with 46 (16 goals, 30 assists) and was named the DEL Player of the Year.

The Ottawa, ON native was originally drafted by Toronto in the sixth round (179th overall) of the 2016 NHL Draft.

  1. Good for him. Drafted in the 6th round nearly eight years ago, deemed as another Mark Hunter big guy bust, and has now earned himself a shot. Don’t see this very often.

  2. Last Leaf-drafted player to be DEL player of the year was Sergei Berezin, so that’s about what I expect from this guy.

  3. Weird. He’s really come a long way since being drafted because this was a Hunter pick if I remember correctly. He didn’t show much promise coming out of London.

  4. Leafs are signing a bunch of young(ish) guys recently who I’ve never heard about. Lots of D-men. Intriguing

  5. Just keep stockpiling as many D as possible. The forward outlook for the Leafs for at least the next 5 years is basically set and has superstar talent, the blue line is rhe only question mark as there has been a massive drop off between the 1st and 2nd pair, then the 2nd and bottom pair.

Eventually Leafs should get someone to stick like they did with found money in Benoit.

  6. Fun fact: Nicolas Mattinen was taken with the sixth-round pick that the Leafs got for trading Olli Jokinen to the Blues
