  1. His xBA is .260 with a 90th percentile xSLG.

Make no mistake, he’s making very good contact, much better than Trevino. He’s going to be really fucking good for us as some point this year. Trust me.

  2. The biggest thing is that he needs to pull the ball and in the air. The reason his numbers aren’t matching his statcast is because he is making hard contact but keeps doing it in the air and to the opposite field, which as a lefty at Yankee stadium is not sustainable and will lead to a lot of hard fly ball outs.

He needs to figure out how to pull the ball more and keep it in the air while maintaining hard contact. I trust he’ll make those adjustments but it’s a bit more complicated than just “he’s been unlucky” – the talent is there but he has to make some adjustments to be successful.

  3. This is the sort of logic that led ti us holding onto Gary Sanchez for at least 2 years longer than we should have. I’m not precluding the possibility of him turning things around, but I put VERY little weight on these sorts of metrics.

  4. warning track power..thats all he has. Higgy was same way, but much netter defender

  5. MLB catchers are measured and valued by the following, in order:

    1. Catch

    2. Block

    3. Throw

    4. Hit

He NEEDS to improve on blocking, body positioning, and ranging if he’s going to be an asset to the pitching staff.

  6. I feel like every year there’s one guy who sucks but baseball savant says he’s getting unlucky. It never turns around.

  7. I remember the same arguments being made with Gary lol. At the end of the day it’s early we’ll see

  8. He passes the eye test for me, plus I raked with his card in MLB The Show last year, so that’s all I need to know about him 🤣

  9. It took Wells a bit to get going last year, and that was with him getting most of the starts. Remember he’s still a rookie too. Not really worried about him at all

  10. statcast?? what next? *”They’re going to have nerds in the dugout. And I’ve said it: If Cashman had any balls, he’d have done that a long time ago. Or he’d like to now. Put a nerd in uniform. Because anybody can manage today. There’s 100 pitches, and then you start parading your 10 relievers in.”*

(i said just the other day well’s statcast data looks way better than his actual numbers, i just love dredging up the goose gossage old man yells at cloud rants)
