Debunking the Dallas Turner is not a scheme fit narrative

This is a pretty tired take on this sub and I'm here to dispel it. A lot of bears fan keep falling for the trap that a 3-4 edge doesn't fit our scheme without actually acknowledging what our scheme is. Its not just 3-4 vs 4-3. turner is the perfect compliment to montez. If you don't believe me watch this video of alex brown (former edge) talk about what the bears are looking for in an edge rusher next to sweat in their scheme. Basically we're not looking for another montez like you might think.

I'd recommend reading bruglers scouting report on turner and joel klatts and chris simms breakdown on turner as well. Alex brown played in the scheme he's talking about in case you didn't know. Every spot on the line has a role, theres a reason billings role is different than dexters role for defensive tackles. its the same idea for edge. Bears are looking for get off and speed next to sweat now, not another pocket pusher. That was the point of the video. Turner does specifically fit what we're looking for, contrary to what many people might think.

People are assuming we need another edge like montez, when in reality thats not what we're looking for was what I was trying to make clear.

  1. Turners is nearly the exact same size as Will Anderson Jr, who plays with his hand in the dirt. Turner has longer arms, as well.

Not sure why everyone thinks 4-3 edges need to all be built like Julius Peppers.

  2. Thank you for this. I get tired of reading all the comments that he can’t play in a 4-3 on this sub.

  3. I don’t give a shit about the scheme.

We traded away Roquan Smith for a bag of chips over the stupid fucking scheme of stupis fucking Head Coach of a stupid fucking 3-14 team. And now we’re paying Tremaine Edmunds and his “perfect” scheme fit 90% of Roquans money to suck ass.

We are not a 17-0 team. Draft BPA, draft the best players and play them. Make Eberflus adjust his coaching if that’s what it takes.

I do not want to hear scheme fit when we make our pick stop #9. Eberflus is mid. Waldron is mid. Their schemes do not take precedence over talent.

I’ve been hearing this stupid fucking 4/3, 3/4 scheme crap for a decade at this point. TJ Watt could play 3/4, 4/3, 7/0, 100/-93. Elite talent will be elite in any scheme.

I don’t even want Turner, I’d rather have Odunze or Bowers because they’re better prospects, but if I see the Bears organization make one more mistake over some shit coaches shit scheme, it’s over.

Go back a decade and you’ll see Bears morons saying Aaron Donald is a bad fit because he’s short and a 3-tech instead of a good old fashioned Bears 350 lb Nose Tackle who get 0.5 sacks a season.

Talent, not scheme fits for Mr. 10-24 and Mr. Couldn’t get a HC job.

A great player can give your franchise a decade plus. Meanwhile the scheme can be tossed at a moments notice.

  4. Because we’ve all watched Shea McClellin and Leonard Floyd. No one wants to see that again.

  5. Byron Murphy 2 is better at his position than any of the edge rushers tbh. Even though I think edge is a much bigger need the more I think about it the more I would rather just take the better player and not try to force it 🤷‍♀️

  6. Turner is a top 10 player in this draft if you exclude QBs. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, my uneducated opinion is that he is the 9th best player excluding QBs. I think most services have him in the 7-12 range. With there being a real good chance 3 QBs are gone before we pick at nine, possibly even 4 QBs, there should be a better player available at 9 than Turner.

It is an offensive heavy class and I hope we don’t have a top 10 pick for years to come. So if we do take someone at 9, I’d prefer we grab the best player available.

  7. Literally every NFL and college team play primarily out of Nickel now. Who cares what Base D is, when EDGEs effectively always pass rush from a 4 man front in college. Turner can rush from a 4 man front because he’s already done it. He’s not that undersized and has plenty of room to add weight. He’s not a perfect prospect and there’s some legit arguments for Verse or Latu, but scheme fit isn’t one of them. If he couldn’t rush and defend the run from a 4 man front he wouldn’t even be talked about as a first rounder.

  8. He’s bigger than Will Anderson (another Alabama edge) who tons of people wanted last year and Anderson is playing great in a 4-3 down in Houston. Turner isn’t as great of a prospect (but still edge1 and imo a tier above Verse/Latu) but the scheme concerns are very overrated.

  9. Expect a couple of contract restructures / extensions, and the Bears will sign an experienced edge. The draft is too iffy at edge. Hate to break it, but they will go OT at 9. Wright was terrifc, and there are 3 or 4 guys that are as good if not better. Deep deep OLine draft. They won’t take a chance on a guy who could be good.
