10 Wins

Not that I’m happy with the offensive play thus far, but this perspective helped me out a little. Tigers won their 10th game on…

  1. A lot of people need to think about this stat too, because they’ve had a couple of 9-23 or 9-24 starts in the past few seasons. A single bad play in a game, or a bad inning will bring out the “this team is garbage” comments, but they’re still 10-7. It’s a very different team from last September, but if you take those games into consideration, fans have been watching a team go 28-17 since the beginning of last September.

This reliance on the bullpen and late inning heroics from the bats isn’t sustainable, but those bad teams from the past few seasons have had good second halves with the bats heating up. The complaints in late summers of recent seasons have been “If only they didn’t suck in April, we’d be closer to the division title right now”.

This team is winning in April right now.

  2. And the best team in MLB only has 12 wins not too bad. Just ignore the negative run differential.

  3. Even in the division runs a decade back, April was usually a slow start. Bats warm up with the weather.

  4. I think the amount of craziness is roughly equal for the “we’re terrible” and “we’re great” camps.

Our batting is anemic, but likely to get better.

Our pitching is a bright spot, and I haven’t looked at the numbers but we have to have one of the best setup/closer combos going right now.

The Tigers do have grit, to borrow from the Lions, though. They don’t give up easy in games and we’ve won a couple where we were useless for 8 out of 9 innings, so that’s a great sign about the club’s makeup.
