[Talkin’ Yanks] Boone says the infield defense has “already been a strength… I think we’re an excellent defensive infield team”

  1. Yankees infield positional OAA so far this season

    1B- -1 OAA (tied 20th)/ -1 DRS (tied 14th)

    2B – 1 OAA (tied 11th)/ -2 DRS (tied 22nd)

    SS – 1 OAA (tied 8th)/ 3 DRS (tied 3rd)

    3B – -2 OAA (tied 24th)/ 1 DRS (tied 6th)

    Edit: Added DRS

Overall, I think the sample is still pretty small to be making any determinations of course. Defense has been hit or miss in the infield so far and hopefully they can tighten things up

Also just because it is interesting as a whole the Yankees are 3rd in DRS so far this season and 10th in OAA

  2. It has cost us a game, and as the stats show, the Yanks infield defense hasn’t been a strength. Maybe not a detriment so far, but definitely not a strength.

  3. Another reason this guy is a boob – The infield isn’t a nightmare, but to say it’s a strength and excellent – can we ever be honest about anything? Just say we are a work in process and we will improve….

  4. Boone, put the LSD tabs away.

Rizzo made errors in consecutive innings the other day.

    Torres, well, plays like himself.

  5. We have a platinum glove winning catcher, a platinum glove winning first baseman, a gold glove winning shortstop, and a gold glove winning utility infielder coming back and yet you all are complaining about infield defense based on a dozen games worth of OAA. You are morons

  6. Oh Aaron, you were doing so well this season, then you had to go off and blatantly lie to us again.

  7. Love this team but I’m not really sure we can win with this guy at the Helm. Praising this stuff, is kind of saying “it’s ok guys, keep doing what you’re doing!” And best believe Torres will.. why not be honest and just be a tiny bit hard nosed. It’s ok to not treat professionals like babies

  8. I really hope we’re not starting this gaslighting bullshit again this year where no one takes accountability. Nothing better than most of the lineup hitting in the low .200s last year and Boone saying everyday how amazing this lineup is.

  9. Last season they had a real hard time turning DP’s. Gleyber is 100% a liability in the field.

  10. They range really well. Got some throwing issues that Rizzo doesn’t seem to be able to clean up as well as he used to, and Volpe’s arm is not quite up to the task. And Gleyber remains one of the most confounding players in the game. Oswaldo is also playing out of position, and gets eaten up on some plays at third. And Rizzo’s got some issues.

  11. Honestly they look kinda rusty like they could use some defensive drills but it they haven’t been miffing the ball through the legs or dropping pop ups. It’s more not coming up clean for the throw whether is it’s caught on the in between bounce and smashed into the dirt or the transfer isn’t clean and a few not so great throws Rizzo looks a bit rusty. Might be decline though.

  12. Not true but also not surprising for him to say? Does anyone really expect Boone to ever put a player/group of players on blast publicly? It’s always gonna be “we need to do better” or “I think the metrics are misleading” etc. it’s PR

  13. I don’t think the defense is a big enough problem to warrant any change. Gleyber is decent at 2b, Volpe obviously worked a lot on his offense this offseason so a little bit of dust in the field is probably to be expected, DJ/Berti will be solid at 3b and obviously Rizzo is a gold glover. What can they change really without disrupting the lineup since the DH is already occupied by Stanton/Judge on days off.

  14. He has to say this. Imagine your boss telling the press you are bad at your job.

  15. Aside from the bobbles and a couple awful throws, I really want to unfairly blame Rizzo for a bunch of our INF problems.

He’s clearly a step behind his normal defensive speed. A lot of “bad” throws that have been missed this year are plays that Rizzo usually makes.

Again I said unfairly because this guy carried our INF defense since he’s been here.

It’s just that when Rizzo is off everyone else suffers. Ideally he figures it out and helps save the rest of our guys.

  16. There’s something Orwellian about the way Aaron Boone communicates to fans and the media. Everything is always great. It’s the opposite of what we can plainly see. Just a constant distortion of reality.

  17. That statement giving 2023 gaslighting vibes.  Can’t dig up the links right now, but the four regular infielders for the Yankees (if you’d call Cabrera a regular) are at the top of the league in errors.  The eye test isn’t so great either, nor are some of the more advanced stats anywhere close to “excellent.”

Look, things are overall going well right now and I know Boonie isn’t going to just go out there and shit on his team, but come on.  Them completely not acknowledging an area for improvement is a bad look.

Glass half full, I think Volpe gets better with experience and Cabrera either does the same or gets much more limited playing time when other options emerge.  My take is the defense is *adequate* enough to not kill the team longterm provided the hitting is there and the pitching is serviceable.

  18. Not even 20 games in to the season and I’m already tired of this miserable ass sub.

We easily have the most negative sports subreddit on the entire site.

    You guys are fucking embarrassing.

  19. Boone is being positive. Infield defense hasn’t been great. Rizzo in particular is a concern because he’s been very good in the past. He’s having problems reaching/scooping balls.

  20. Rizzo and Volpe have committed more errors in such a short period of time than I can remember from last season. Especially Rizzo hes usually pretty solid, Volpe is still pretty good but can be better. Gleyber is always going to have boneheaded plays and lapses of judgement, Waldo has been ok at third.
