  1. He won an mvp and a World Series… what more could he do?

Edit: also ROY and 4x All Star

  2. ROY, MVP, WS champ in his first two season. He was on track but not any longer. He needed to sustain that for 10+ years to live up to the hype. He had a good 5 year run but not enough.

I’m sure most would trade their careers for his first two seasons though.

  3. ROY, 4x all star, mvp, won a ring. Pretty terrifying hitter to pitch to from 2015-2021 cant really ask for much more from a prospect. Glad he got his bag after the cubs fucked his service time

  4. With an mvp and a WS ring he’s lived up to his own dreams and expectations. I dont think its far to expect any player to turn into a mega star.

  5. For his first few years he looked like a future hall of famer. ROY, MVP, World Series Champ. The dropoff has been steep, but he’s also been dealing with almost constant injuries.

Every Cubs fan who saw him play during his prime will love him forever.

I don’t know if that means he lived up to his hype or not. I’d say, initially yes. But injuries and age come for the best of us and nobody stays at the top forever…

  6. Yes, but his legacy is very much broken. He will go down as a Cubs legend, but the expectation was Hall of Famer. It’s the Stephen Strasburg dichotomy: he did what he needed to do, but it could have been more.

  7. For sure. He was an MVP and has back issues. Back issues fuck you up. Just like Yelich. We are being robbed of 2 pretty great players that could’ve been better.

  8. Which hype? That he’d be capable of greatness (achieved), or that he’d sustain greatness (not there, but salvageable)?

  9. I didn’t recall him being that hyped. And doing a quick google search of the time he was called up, his comps were Chris Davis and Giancarlo Stanton. Both fair, nothing crazy. He most certainly lived up to that.

  10. College POY, Minor Leauge POY, ROY, MVP all consecutively. Pretty sure he’s the only player to do that. That’s incredible on its own. Then add the 4 all stars and a WS ring. I’d say he’s got nothing to be ashamed of..

  11. Yes and no. Was he as good as advertised as a young player? Absolutely. Helped change the trajectory of the franchise.
But will he make the HoF? He definitely has work left to do with the injuries piling up a limited window to do it.

  12. It’s crazy to think how many hyped young players this team had, won the WS with them, and then most of them didn’t really live up to the hype Long term.

  13. Rookie of year ✔️
    MVP ✔️
    WS Ring ✔️
    Big fat payday ✔️
    Hype lived up too ✔️

  14. Nowadays no one lives up to the hype. We look at these 18 year old high school players and call them the next this or that. I mean Jackson Holiday makes his MLB debut and I heard some already calling him a future hall of famer. Yamamoto getting the largest contract for a pitcher before ever throwing a pitch in the MLB.. Unless you are underrated as a prospect it’s hard to live up to the hype. I can’t think of anyone who has lived up to their hype. Even Griffey can’t say he lived up to the hype. But he’s probably the closest being a first overall pick at 18 and a HOF career.

  15. He won a World Series with the Cubs, put some respect on his name.

But I am surprised he flamed out so fast. Since leaving the Cubs he’s been a major disappointment and one of the worst players in baseball when taking into account value/contract

  16. Yes, but he peaked super early…now he’s just along for the ride in Colorado
