[Jazz’s] Danny Ainge: “We’re ready to go big game hunting.”

I’ve generally been in favor of the Spurs trading for Trae Young, BUT only if it’s a reasonable deal. The Jazz are one of the few teams who can easily outbid the Spurs.

Here’s another potential outcome: the Jazz overpay for Trae Young, (probably picks and young players) and the Spurs reap the benefits of the Hawks getting worse.

  1. Trae young being reunited with john collins would be interesting, but he’d definitely play well with markannen

  2. The jazz bringing in Young at any cost would be a strange, short-sighted, very not Danny ainge type of move. They clearly have a better roster than the Spurs but not nearly good enough to become a genuine contender with young and unlike San Antonio who has a high ceiling tie to Victor’s transcendent ability, don’t have any player on the roster who realistically looks like they can ascend to a level where that team could possibly become the type of team that would be worth spending a ton of draft assets over

If they’re bringing in young, I would imagine they probably would want to go after another high-end player too. I don’t think they would casually do something crazy like offer six first round picks. I think they’re going to try to make a move. But I think they’re going to try to preserve flexibility to make additional ones around it.

  3. Interesting, but going hunting doesn’t always mean you come home with a trophy. Also a little weird to throw it out there like that and let other teams know you’re eager to make a splash, but Ainge knows better than I do and he has a track record so who knows?

I don’t know how much it means for the Spurs. Utah clearly has a guy who is a solid No.2-ish so I don’t know what adding another similar level player like Young would do for them. I guess it drives up the price on available players if there is someone with a sack full of assets willing to spend, but I think the Spurs would be content to let them have at it and keep their powder dry.

If Utah tries to convert their Gobert proceeds into Trae Young, uh, please do – it means ATL goes into rebuild, probably move Murray, and we are eating good in the high lottery 3 years.

With volatility there is opportunity and the Spurs are poised to take advantage. That said, if the Spurs FO is locked in on Trae, all their picks available start at late first round and may or may not get better as time goes on while we own ATL’s picks and control of their draft. That horse has been beaten to death here and I’m not for a Trae trade so much as if he does end up here, I’ll cheer for him.

End of the day, this makes the offseason more interesting even if the Spurs do not partake directly.

  4. When Danny Ainge says he ready to go big game hunting he means tank for Cooper Flagg…right?

  5. Why would Hawks knowingly make a trade to make themselves worse without their own picks? Worst case for them is they keep both Trae and Murray and stay at play-in or first round playoff. Not every team are contenders every year, and Hawks are still competitive and attractive to fans with their Allstar backcourts. I don’t see the incentive for them to blow that up unless they get better or get their picks.

  6. That’s the under discussed part of the Trae Young trade. If they’re so eager to move him, let them do it. Our picks only get more valuable
