Abner Uribe early struggles

It’s seems Uribe is struggling so far this season. Messing around on his baseball savant I noticed 2 things that might be the root issues.

  1. Sinker vertical movement has dropped from 2.7 inches to less than an inch (.9) from 2023 to 2024

  2. Placement of sinker is ending up in middle of the zone instead of bottom right from 2023 to 2024

What else do you think is causing some of his early season struggles?

Edit: spelling/bottom right side of zone not bottom left.

  1. I’d assume those correlate? He’s expecting more drop on the sinker but it’s not happening and the pitch end up down the middle.

  2. You’ve done research on it, which is more then what I can say I’ve done. But maybe it’s a mental thing. With the increase pressure on him to be the closer this year, it might be getting to him a bit. He’s young and I expect him to be the closer once Devin comes along. I’m hoping that’s all it is and he can work past it

  3. I wonder if he developed a cutter to compliment his sinker. East/West movement has proven effective. Potentially lowering hard contact rate

  4. I think it’s just early and he isn’t throwing as hard as he normally does. His fastball is great when it tops 100+, but he was throwing about 97 today with absolutely no movement.

  5. It is hard to make a lot out of April bullpen stuff. They have thrown so few pitches that it can be anywhere from a bad day to just not feeling their delivery yet to an injury.
