Posting a random Steeler every day until kickoff or I forget – Day 46: Chidi Iwuoma

CB Chidi Iwuoma (2002-2006)

Chidi Iwuoma was signed by the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent after the 2001 NFL Draft out of the University of California. After a year with the Lions, he signed with the Steelers ahead of the 2002 season. He played in Pittsburgh for 4 years, primarily playing on special teams but also netting 67 combined tackles in 60 games and earning a ring in Super Bowl XL over the Seattle Seahawks. He was named a special teams co-captain in two consecutive seasons.

He underwent shoulder surgery after the 2005 season and returned for pre-season camp before suffering a concussion and being released on September 6, 2006. He then spent a few weeks with the New England Patriots and St. Louis Rams before returning to the Steelers in December for the final weeks of the season. He was re-signed as an unrestricted free agent that offseason but was one of the final pre-season cuts ahead of the 2007 season and spent a brief time with the Tennessee Titans before retiring from the league.

After retirement, Iwuoma worked for the University of California’s Athletic Study Center as the Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Development before returning to the Steelers as their designated BLESTO Scout in 2013.

  1. Chidi was a beast. He was always first down the field in ST coverage, and even when he didn’t make the tackle, he was blowing up the blocking scheme and disrupting the return man
