Would you consider Alex Smith’s career a bust as a first overall draft pick?

And is Brandon reaching with the "forgotten" label? Obviously we'll never forget him, but it's he an afterthought for the rest of the leagues fan bases?

  1. for SF, yes for his career not after his time in KC. As for the forgotten label, not right now as its entirely too early for him to be forgotten especially after how his career ended but yeas from now, he’ll likely be thought of in the same way as Steve DeBerg and because of how Mahomes career has gone he’ll quickly become a memory but not yet.

  2. Alex smith played a big part in establishing the chiefs culture just like Drew Bledsoe did the patriots. He’s not a bust and we’re not forgetting him anytime soon.

  3. He was far from living up to expectations at #1 pick, but he’s far from a bust. A *starting* QB for 10+ years isn’t a bust, there’s just no way. Especially when multiple teams traded for him to be their de facto starter as well.

A bust is more like Josh Rosen who lost all usability after his first or second year. Ever 49er fan I’ve heard from basically said the system failed Alex, not the other way around.

  4. Not even close to a bust and he’s not forgotten across the league. Signed, a non KC fan, married to a longtime KC fan lol.

  5. Not even remotely. Alex Smith was a long time starter and had a lot of success in his career.

Someone’s career cannot be based on draft position.

CEH is a good RB and has been successful in the NFL… unless you hold that 1st round pick over his head. It’s not fair to the players to label them a bust because of their draft position.

  6. Switch Rodgers and Smith and you have insanely different career results.

I’ve always felt he got QBPTSD from the shit years in SF. Mike Nolan basically called him out and Alex played injured, I’m convinced that fucked his arm up and he lost some arm abilities/strength, then couple that with the following years with singletary up his ass and him just trying to preserve his job. I feel this is a huge part of why he always played so conservative in the years following. He finally started coming into his own with harbaugh and then was kicked aside and really blossomed with Reid… Then was kicked aside again.

You can’t feel bad for his earnings, but I feel bad for all the other shit. I love that dude man lol

  7. Nah. Had a lengthy and mostly successful career. Certainly not when you compare him to other top picks who truly imploded.

  8. A disappointment, sure, especially with Rodgers also available, but far from the worst miss at number 1.

  9. Not a bust. Bust is somebody like Mitch Trubisky. Alex Smith was a very good starring QB who got his team to and won multiple playoff games and made pro bowls. He just wasn’t generational.

  10. He was a winning QB at exactly 100-73-1. Threw just 109 interceptions in 15 seasons, which really is peanuts. Wish he could have won a ring. He is my second favorite QB in Chiefs history I have watched as a fan, after Patrick Mahomes of course.

  11. Definitely not a bust. Maybe he wasn’t what they wanted him to be but he got teams to the playoffs and played a strong strategic game. He was really good on both the niners and the chiefs and lost his job to a flashier younger player both times. Without Smith I think Mahomes would have taken longer to develop. In my heart he will always be a jackpot.

  12. No. Maybe he doesn’t get in the HOF on the first ballot like some first overall picks, but he’s better than those guys that Detroit grabbed in back to back years
