Clock is ticking on Sticks

  1. Yikes. He doesn’t really sound confident in his decision at all. My biggest takeaway from this though is that Bryan Shaw is a fuckin dog.

*His velocity and command held steady; he just had to endure the pain. After three weeks, it subsided. He surmised it was a bone chip or spur that temporarily shifted out of place.*

  2. I understand wanting to play and compete as much as possible. I pitched for a long time, but I never had the opportunity to miss out on a contract. Get the damn surgery, dude.

  3. The only guy I can find it working for is Gallen everyone else who tried this was a waste of time, from the teams point of view there is no point having a guy throw 89 meatballs over and over but they can’t make him get surgery

  4. Anybody who thinks he wouldn’t have been better off getting the surgery is out of their mind. I’ve clarified this before when talking about his surgery but, as someone who has had multiple knee operations, no one should have surgery if they don’t want to and they don’t *need* to. However, there are consequences for that choice despite the fact that I’m not going to hold it against Triston or anything. The clock is ticking indeed. I hope it works out. I still think the best time to have the operation for Triston was in June or whatever it was last year. The second best time would be right now.

  5. Don’t have a subscription, is there anything that is actually confirming that he still has a partial tear in here? Everything I have seen to this point has just referenced it from last year and assumed it hasn’t healed, without any evidence to support that claim. Typically partial torn ligaments heal on their own with rest. That was the entire reason he had a choice to not have surgery to begin with.

  6. IF his ligament is still torn, the team should sit him down and explain that it’s either surgery or a DFA. Unfortunately, in his current state, and assuming the ligament is torn, he’s a waste of a roster spot. If the ligament isn’t torn, maybe he should get a second opinion because what he’s throwing is worse than meatballs.

Either way, we lose an above-average pitcher for ~2 seasons at this point. Really not good.

  7. I for one, am hoping that he’s just dealing with some rust…he didn’t get to pitch at all last year or have a normal off-season, so I’m hoping with time he improves, both in command and velo…but his velo doesn’t need to be 95 for him to be successful. I think with the command right, he can be dominant at 92-93 with the insane amount of extension he gets.

  8. The thing I don’t get, and correct me if I’m wrong, what’s changed in the last 365 days

  9. One thing is for certain, he’s not going to stick around in the rotation for long with a 6 or 7 era. Whether he wants the surgery or not he still needs to give the coaches a reason to keep trotting him out there over Lively or Curry.
