Every middle middle fastball to Brendan Donovan this season

Why does STL keep this type of bat in the top of the lineup

This is somebody that we're noticing cannot handle fastballs over the middle

  1. Who’s supposed to hit there instead?? Winn is the only option with edman and Carlson on the IL, and Winn’s numbers (as much as I love him) are greatly inflated by having VS2/Siani right after him, and most pitchers would rather face them. Until this series, Donovan was crushing it. I do not understand this post at all tbh.

  2. I get being patient and seeing a pitch, but he and Goldy are driving me crazy with this shit

  3. It is frustrating, but his OBP currently sits at third on the team behind Winn and Contreras, respectively. Presumably, that’s the thinking.

Hopefully, these guys can find it soon. Would love to know what the other side of .500 feels like again.

  4. Donovan is hitting .500/.500/1.000 on middle middle fastballs. This is the dumbest post I’ve seen this week.

  5. It looks like every single one of these that he watches down the middle is the first pitch or a 1-0 count. That’s not unusual.

It’s bullshit to say he can’t handle fastballs. No stats back that up. He’s currently hitting .270 against fastballs with a .351 SLG and a .487 XSLG. Last year he hit .308 against fastballs with a .442 SLG.

He has an extremely good chase rate, whiff rate, and strikeout rate. His OBP is .354.

If he were faster he would be the perfect lead off hitter. Even without the speed, his tools belong at the top of the order.

This is a terrible take, OP.

  6. Yes let’s only talk about one particular kind of PA that is too small of samples anyways… cards fans get dumber yearly. Donovan rules as a leadoff hitter and most teams would kill for him.

  7. Horrifically bad post, bro cherry picking the smallest sample bullshit to make a non point. Learn ball.

  8. You do realize one of the roles of a leadoff hitter is to work the count and drive the pitch count up right? Imagine thinking Brendan Donovan is a bad hitter. Dude is a gamer

  9. It doesn’t mean he’s got a “horrific approach” He is clearly looking for a specific pitch in a specific location to hit. I don’t have the numbers but I’d imagine the majority of first pitch pitches are fastballs down the middle as the pitcher and batter tries to get ahead in the strike zone. I’m surprised guys don’t go up there looking for that but if they did and didn’t get a first pitch fast ball down the middle and swung, they’re down 0-1 anyways.

Donovan gets on base. Not at all worried about him. I’m more worried about Goldy, Gorman, Scott, Walker, etc who are not getting on baseball or driving the ball.

  10. I feel like your criticism should be focused on a different player, Donovan doesn’t deserve it imo

  11. Brendan has a wRC+ of 119 meaning that he’s better than average at scoring runs. That’s what we want from the lead off hitter. Someone who can score runs

  12. God I love reddit and sports. You really see how the lack of knowledge people really have.
