Posting a random Steeler every day until kickoff or I forget – Day 48: Izzy Weinstock

FB Izzy Weinstock (1937-1938)

Izzy Weinstock played football at the University of Pittsburgh from 1932 to 1934, being selected by the Newspaper Enterprise Association and the North American Newspaper Alliance as a First-Team fullback on the 1934 College Football All-America Team, as well as AP Second-Team All-American. After leaving Pitt, he spent a year with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1935 before joining the Pittsburgh Steelers, then still called the Pirates, in 1937 after sitting for the 1936 season.

Over his two season in Pittsburgh, he played in 13 games, rushing for 88 yards on 31 attempts. After sustaining a broken nose, he became one of the first football players to wear a face mask while playing. After leaving the NFL, he served as a lieutenant in the United States Army Air Forces during WWII, and was a head coach and player for the 1943 Spokane Air Service Commandos football team. Following the War, he moved to New York and became a sales executive.

Weinstock is a member of the Pennsylvania Football Hall of Fame and the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame of Western Pennsylvania. Weinstock passed away on September 26, 1997 after a long illness.
