“It would’ve been Joey. But it was me”: Astros prospect Blair Henley on his disastrous MLB call-up

  1. Sugar Land Space Cowboys right-hander Blair Henley was sitting with teammate [Joey Loperfido](https://www.chron.com/sports/astros/article/joey-loperfido-sugar-land-19412721.php) one night—eating Cava takeout bowls, talking about their lives in the minor leagues on a Sunday in April—when Henley took a call.

It was not just a call, it was *the* call, the one that every minor league player hopes to get. He was going to pitch in a Houston Astros uniform against the [Texas Rangers](https://www.chron.com/sports/astros/article/fanatics-city-connect-astros-rangers-19392194.php) the next day.

“We were talking that day because Joey is killing it,” Henley told Chron on April 19. “And I was like, ‘Hey Joe, there’s not a big difference between here and there, the guys up there are just more consistent and they have a great head on their shoulders and make adjustments. Whatever you’re doing here, you could do the same thing there except hit a little less.’

“We were sitting there, and I get a call from [Space Cowboys manager] Mickey [Storey]. If anyone thought who would be the next person going up, it would’ve been Joey. But it was me.”

  2. I saw Blair pitch at UT 6 or 7 times and kinda saw him often battle battle in ABs. He would be wild wild then throw a couple nasty pitches get some outs but it always seemed like he really had to work through an AB to get the outs.
