Royals: Week 4 Power Rankings

Bleacher Report: 7th

MLB.com: 8th

FOX Sports: 10th

CBS Sports: 12th

USA Today: 16th

It doesn’t mean much, given that this is Week 4 and only about 1/8th of the season has been played thus far, but it seems like the 1-2 series loss to the Orioles this weekend ended up not influencing a massive swing in the Royals’ placement on the rankings.

An interesting note, however: CBS Sports and USA Today both mentioned that the Royals amassed 6 of their 13 total wins against the White Sox, while being 7-8 thus far against other opponents. The Royals will be tested on this over the next two weeks as they play new opponents: the Blue Jays for 4 games at home, the Tigers for 3 games in Detroit, the Blue Jays again for 3 games in Toronto, and the defending champion Rangers for 3 games at home.

  1. Honestly those all feel a bit high to me since we’re in a bit of a slump and even before then we’ve shown some obvious flaws.

However I’m not on board with the arguments/implication that we’ve gotten most of our wins against the White Sox. I’d argue that all but two of our losses have been relatively close games which came down to the final inning(s) and in another universe could have gone our way. Good teams are supposed to beat up on bad teams and our recent skid has come against a very good Baltimore team and a suddenly very hot Mets team in New York.

The rest of April should be a good show of our team’s quality as we’re against Toronto twice and Detroit who are both in that “good but not great” category. If we finish the month at or above .500 then the “they’ve only beat the White Sox” claims should be put to rest.

  2. Shit man I went into the season hoping we’d be ~.500ish. It’s early and we can only play who’s on our schedule (lol ChiSox) but we hold serve against this next group of teams, we might be on to something.

  3. While I feel the same concern as USA Today and why this teams record is what it is, Im not on board with them being 16th while they currently sit tied for the 4th best record in baseball. Yes theyve had a softer schedule so far but its not like they havent competed when playing the supposed better teams. Should be no lower than 10th right now, later in the season who knows I’ll probably be happy with 16th
