✂️ Had no idea the colts were that close to having elway. Wonder how different colts history would be if he played for them. Also does anybody know why John Elway didn’t want to play for the Colts?

Also kinda wild that this doesn’t happen more often considering how many players have their careers ruined by bad teams at the top of the draft

  1. At the time, the Colts were a total dumpster fire and everyone knew it. They were entering their last year in Baltimore where they played in a completely dilapidated building located in what was a run down part of town. And probably more than anything, Papa Irsay was a massive son of a bitch.

  2. There’s an ESPN 30 for 30 documentary on the 1983 draft.

    Ultimately there was likely a myriad of reasons why Elway refused to play for the Colts (his media reason was that he was a Cali kid and liked warm weather – Denver, right?) but one of the biggest reasons called out in that documentary is our Head Coach, Frank Kush.

    Frank Kush had a reputation as an old school, hard ass coach. Elway didn’t want to play for that.

  3. He did threaten to play baseball instead, I believe. Cornelius Bennett did something similar by forcing a trade.

  4. because he’s a bitch. there’s a lot more money in the draft now right? that’ll do a lot of good at preventing disgruntled rookies.

  5. You’re a Colts fan and you don’t know the Colts were supposed to have Elway? Are you serious?

    The colts arguably had the 3 best QB prospects in history in their sights. Elway refused, we got 1 SB out of Peyton, and we killed Luck.

  6. It’s cause of Jim’s dad – Robert Irsay. He had a bad reputation and Elway’s dad didn’t want him to play for Irsay.
