[@theazsportsguy] The Tucson Roadrunners sent this out recently. (I grabbed a copy from Facebook) We’ll see how this plays out.

  1. I would hate to see Tucson lose their team but I think RoadRunner games at the Mullet would be the best environment in the AHL. Hopefully they can compromise and do both.

  2. Tucson doesn’t deserve losing their team too, a hand full of games at mullet would be cool but I don’t want anything beyond that

  3. It is an unpopular opinion, and it truly is terrible for the fans down in Tucson as nobody should lose a team (I mean come on, this has been the worst month ive had in years), but Tucson was near the bottom of the league in attendance this year despite being one of the better teams, and has been losing money for years now. It shouldnt come as a surprise that if Meruelo is going to continue to own one team, he is going to try and position it in a spot where it will put up better revenue numbers (not to say I will support the team or anything else he owns, but it will do better in Tempe than it has in Tucson).

The Roadrunners can have a rowdy atmosphere a few times a year, but the weeknight games are absolute ghost towns. Heck, even their game 1 of the playoffs next week still has over 50% of the tickets available right now on Ticketmaster.

Hockey in Tucson can and will work, but it is extremely difficult when the public hockey/skating infrastructure is nearly non-existent.
