Day #72 of posting a random Lion until the NFL Draft – Rodney Peete

  1. How much better would the early 90s teams have been if Peete hadn’t suffered one or more injuries every season? He missed at least 5 games a season in each of his 5 years with Detroit. Despite the injury history, he somehow played 10 more seasons after that with 5 other teams, also facing many injury battles most years. He had one standout year in Philadelphia (1995, 9-3 as a starter, played in all but one game that season, and was the Eagles’ QB in their wildcard win over Detroit.)

Interesting note I just learned looking up the stats just now to double-check the comment above — he was a 6th round draft pick in 1989, but during pre-season that year was *still* expected to be the starter (!)… before he pulled a hamstring right before Week 1.

And one last tidbit — he and his family starred in a reality TV show in the 2010s on the Oprah network?!?

  2. I had a sweet “Runnin’ Rodney Peete” shirt in the 90s that I’ve been looking for on ebay for years.

  3. Full disclosure: he is the reason I picked the Lions. I was a disgruntled teenager Rams fan and decided that whoever drafted Rodney was my new team (obviously was a USC guy too).

  4. In middle school I created a fake video game cover-art called “Rodney Peete’s Rollout Magic”. I think it still has potential.
