Posting a random Steeler every day until kickoff or I forget – Day 53: John Goodman (no, not that one)

DE John Goodman (1980-1985)

John Goodman was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second round of the 1980 draft out of Oklahoma. His rookie year, he suffered an ACL injury during the final preseason game and then re-injured it several weeks later against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which he said had lasting effects throughout his career. Over his six seasons in Pittsburgh, he started in 50/64 games and had 10 sacks. As players like Joe Greene, Jack Ham, Jack Lambert and L.C. Greenwood began to retire, Goodman took on more of a leadership role on the team.

After the 1985 season, he was released by the Steelers and worked out for a few other teams, but the effects of injuries he had suffered over the years kept him from passing physicals, so he retired from his playing career. After leaving the league, he started working in institutional securities as a broker. His daughter, Chelsea, was a successful high jumper at his alma mater, Oklahoma, and was previously married to Eagles’ offensive tackle Lane Johnson.
