Who will be this year’s inductee into the Chiefs Hall of Honor? [OC]

For those who are unaware, every year on draft weekend, the Chiefs annouce that year’s inductee into their Hall of Honor. That player will have their name added to the ring of honor in a ceremony at a home game this fall. You can view a full list of inductees here.

Based on ProFootballReference’s Career Approximate Value (AV) metric, defined here, we can sort all Chiefs players by their career AV with the team.

Here is the list of all Chiefs players by AV, with current members of the Hall of Honor highlighted in yellow.

Takeaways:

  • First, the obvious: Mahomes, Kelce and Chris Jones are already in rarified air with much more to come
  • Trent Green is the highest among all players who aren't active or recently retired
  • The majority of the other highest-ranked players are offensive or defensive lineman who played a long time but received one or zero postseason honors.
  • Based on recent inductee trends, players who played in the 1980s or earlier are in danger of being passed by.
  • Tony Gonzalez (last a Chief in 2008, inducted in 2018) and Brian Waters (last a Chief in 2010, inducted in 2019) are two of the quicker turnarounds from leaving the team to induction, so it is probably not Tamba Hali, Jamaal Charles or Derrick Johnson's time just yet.

Curious to hear everyone's thoughts on who should be next, especially our older fans!

  1. I suppose it’s probably Trent Green because I don’t see an obvious alternative….

Other names that stuck out to me:

Willie Roaf: He was part of those incredible OLs but did he play with KC long enough?

Marcus Allen: There’s 4 years left before there starts to be some crowding after 2017 but he’s gotta get in soon, right?

Eddie Kennison: not super high on the list but he was beloved.

Jamaal Charles: He’s been somewhat present in KC at Chiefs/NFL events…got his autograph during draft weekend. too recently retired.

Eric Berry: too recent and his date lines up nicely to go in after the crowded 2017 “class”

Will be interesting who they decide to put in first between Hali and Johnson.

Jared Allen: didn’t end his career here but was popular.

  2. Charles should be one of the quicker turnarounds too, I’d think.

Saleamua is underrated, and was a truly excellent player (and a popular one). I’d be all for that too.

  3. John Alt for a 2nd time if he can pull an Archie and make whatever team drafts his kid trade him to KC.

  4. Fred Arbanas. 5x All Pro, 5x Pro Bowler, Super Bowl champion and played his entire career for the Chiefs. After his playing time he served on the state legislature and stayed in KC his whole life. Dude embodied the Chiefs and the area, and deserves a posthumous memorial.

  5. Where the fuck is Dirty Dan!? Ldt is on this list and Sorensen isn’t? I’m not joking.

  6. My guess is that within a year or two they’ll go with Charles, Hali, and Johnson (probably in that order), so they’ll try to get a Marty-era player in before then. Saleamua or Szott both strike me as very good choices–key players in the trenches who were part of teams that won a lot of games, and both were Chiefs for a very long time.
