Yes, that headline is because it’s conveniently timed to discuss Mason Black coming up to the big leagues.

Player of the Game: Mason Black: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K

This wasn’t Black’s best game, but it was another good one, and he’s got 25 K’s to 5 walks on the year…but with Snell on the IL and Cobb’s return delayed, I think more focus should be on Black right now.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • CF Chase Pinder: 2-2, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 2B (3), 2 BB – A perfect on-base day for Pinder, who now has 12 walks to 11 strikeouts in 15 games.
  • RF Yusniel Diaz: 1-3, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 HR (3), 1 BB, 2 SB (4) – This gives Diaz three home runs in his last five games played, but this is also his first game played in four days. He’s hitting .231/.344/.577 overall.
  • C Jakson Reetz: 1-1, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 HBP – A perfect on-base day for Reetz as well, although the hard way with a HBP. The two walks doubles his total this season through 11 games played. He’s hitting .242/.390/.515.

Top Prospect Lines:

  • SS Marco Luciano: 0-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 E (4)
  • LF Luis Matos: 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP
  • DH Heliot Ramos: 0-4, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 SF
  • 3B Casey Schmitt: 1-5, 3 RBI, 1 2B (5), 1 K

Other Notable Lines:

Player of the Game: Vaun Brown: 1-3, 1 3B (1), 1 K

Brown is out of the bingo numbers and onto the Interstate with his 1-for-3 performance today. He’s still just 5-for-45 with a double and a triple. I should have noted that yesterday’s game was his first all season in which he did not strike out (0-for-2 with a walk).

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • Victor Bericoto: 1-4, 3 K – Bericoto’s single was Richmond’s only other hit. He’s hitting .230 (14-for-61) after 15 games.
  • RP Evan Gates: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K – Gates had one of his best games, lowering his ERA to 0.96 after 9.1 innings, but has 12 strikeouts to 11 walks after this game.

Other Notable Lines:

  • SP Matt Frisbee: 3.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
  • RP Eric Silva: 1.0 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 0 K

High-A: Eugene 7, Hillsboro 6 (10 Innings)

Player of the Game: RF Tanner O’Tremba: 3-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, 2 2B (2), 1 HBP

Another busy day for O’Tremba offensively, who has raised his batting average from .200 to .303 after just two games. He’s now got two doubles, a triple, and a home run through 11 games.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • SP Manuel Mercedes: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K – Great game for Mercedes, who gets his strikeouts even with his walks now at 12 apiece inn 14.2 IP.
  • C Onil Perez: 2-6, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 SB (7) – Perez is hitting .356 through 11 games, with six walks to six strikeouts, and more steals now than both.
  • CF Quinn McDaniel: 1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 3 BB, 2 K, 2 SB (12) – Two more steals for McDaniel, who now has six games with two steals, and has only been caught twice. It’s also his second straight game with three walks, raising his OBP to .471.
  • SS Diego Velasquez: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 2B (5), 1 BB Velasquez doesn’t have many big games, he just gets hits, but this is his first extra-base hit since April 10th, nine games ago.

Top Prospect Lines:

  • DH Jack Payton: 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 HBP

Other Notable Lines:

  • 2B Justin Bench: 1-2, 1 R, 1 2B (3), 1 SB (1), 2 SAC, 1 HBP

Low-A: San Jose 7, Fresno 0

Player of the Game: LF Bo Davidson: 2-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, 1 HR (1), 1 BB, 1 K

It was a good day for the San Jose offense, but a big one for Davidson, who hit his first home run of the year. The 2023 undrafted free agent had just one home run last season in 16 games at the ACL

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • SP Cale Lansville: 4.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 HBP – Huge bounceback for Lansville, who last week gave up ten hits in 2.2 innings. He dropped his ERA to 4.91 with this game.
  • DH Drew Cavanaugh: 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B (1), 1 K – With only five games played while being on a 3-man catching crew, this was Cavanaugh’s first extra-base hit, having gon 3-for-13.
  • CF Jonah Cox: 2-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 SB (10) – Another solid day for Cox, as he reaches double digits in steals without having been caught. He had a tot of 20 in 35 games last year in the A’s organization.

Top Prospect Lines:

  • 1B Bryce Eldridge: 1-4, 2 K – Eldridge was lifted in the 8th inning for a defensive replacement, but he was absolutely fine after his last moment on the field, and it makes sense in a blowout in his second game back from injury, so this one you probably don’t need to worry about him this time.
  • SS Cole Foster: 1-4, 3 RBI, 1 2B (4), 1 K

Other Notable Lines:

  • RF Cesar Quintas: 2-4, 1 R, 1 K
  • 2B Javier Francisco: 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 2B (4), 1 K
  • RP Cody Tucker: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 HBP

  1. My guess is they won’t want to start Black’s options quite yet and lose someone off the roster, so we see will another call up for Jefferies.
