  1. It’s funny my buddy were talking about Jorge Posada vs Yogi Berra last night and ultimately agreed Yogi has the edge, 7 championships and the number of RBIs he had is just incredible.

  2. Not even the best Yankees catcher, IMHO, but I’m sure Pudge and Bench might wanna have something to say. Personally I was a Benito Santiago fan when he was with the Padres growing up.

  3. I think people seriously underrate Yogi. His stats over a seven year peak from 1950-1956:

    * .295/.364/.502 for a .866OPS and 135 OPS+

    * Played 1009 games and caught the vast majority of them including tons of double headers. Don’t have those numbers on hand.

    * never finished lower than fourth in AL MVP voting, including three wins and two runner-ups.

    * hit a total of 191 HRs and only less than 25 in one season

    * had a BB:K ratio of 396:166

    * 27 triples over that time frame

    * his season average over that time was: 161H, 93R, 24 2B, 4 3B, 27HR, and 108RBI.

    * managed a very young and very outstanding pitching staff including the first years of Whitey Ford’s career.

    Throughout his career he was widely regarded as one of the best players in baseball. We can bicker all day about the *best* catcher of all time, but Yogi should be a unanimous Top 3, and he ain’t three.
