We literally changed the landscape of NFL draft

After seeing the success of both Aaron Rodgers and Jordon Love, the entire league went crazy to draft a backup QB instead of throwing them to the wolves in their first year. All of these teams dream of developing their rookie QBs into some franchise superstars a few years later.

  1. I get the strategy with Penix, and it could pay off, but the idea of a draft and develop QB, is usually a tools-y player who is young and has most of his best football ahead of him. Penix might be 26 when he takes the field for the first time. That’s not a death sentence, but I would question how much more of a ceiling he has left to reach.

Either way, ATL’s draft doesn’t affect me one way or another. Good luck to them I guess.

  2. It’s not enough to simply have them sit and watch you have to invest in their development. That means keeping around coaches that are great teachers. Those don’t grow on trees.

  3. And still I’m reading pundits say guys like Penix and Atlanta are losers in this draft. My bro-in-law is a huge Vikings fan and we talked about that same scenario if Cousins stayed in Minny. Penix is definitely an injury risk but the guy is an amazing talent. Let him heal up more and learn behind Cousins. Good investment IMO.

Instead, the Vikings get a guy like Darnold and I’ll put dollars to donuts they’ll have these rolling QB controversies when one of them has a halfway decent game. Unfortunately, both of those clowns got a safety blanket with Aaron Jones.

Darnold, a wash out #1 overall pick with another potential wash out in McCarthy.

  4. Except you need to have a culture of success. Not sure I’d consider the Falcons that. They have been plagued by instability since 28-3.

  5. Yea but love was 21 and the 26th pick. Penix will be 24 next week and love is 25 now in year 5.

  6. And the corollary is that Caleb Williams will start Day 1 and have to take his lumps. Hopefully ruins the guy (for our sake, sorry Caleb). I know Chicago has an improving offense with weapons galore now but throwing him into the fire with a defensive minded Head Coach, I don’t know.

  7. What are you talking about. In the last few years starting rookies has been a huge trend. Last year alone there were 10.

  8. I saw a qte from the Falcons “The Green Bay Model was something we talked about. It proved to be right last year: Hopefully we’ll be right with them” Raheem Morris. Then again, I saw it on IG, so that is my source.

  9. …what? lmao, sitting your rookie QB has been a thing for a long time. i guarantee you nobody is doing it just because the Packers did it.

  10. sorry but the chiefs get the credit here. The Packers only drafted Jordan Love because they thought Aaron Rodgers was washed when he wasnt

  11. As all these QBs and WRs came off the board in the first half of the 1st round, I just kept getting happier and happier for Green Bay. That was leaving a lot more for the organization to choose from at pick 25.

  12. What’s annoying is hearing some of these QBs say they are annoyed or disappointed by it, like I’m sorry, are we supposed to just stick with you until you can’t throw a football anymore and not worry about the future?

  13. Imagine thinking the packers invented the strategy of “drafting a QB to develop”

  14. No we didn’t. People have short memories because that’s how a lot of teams use to develop QB’s. There’s always been rookie qbs that were year one starters, but it’s way more common now than it was 20 years ago.
