‘GMFB’ details most intriguing rookie QB situation

all right I got to ask you and we’ll
start with you Peter which rookie
quarterback situation is the most
intriguing I saw a really funny thing on
Twitter last night it was a Sports
Illustrated cover and it was people
trying to decide if Cam Newton Jake
Locker or Blaine Gabbert were going to
be the guys we put so much stock into
these rookie quarterbacks so many
expectations especially when they’re
picked so high in the first round which
one stands out to you the
most let’s go from the back to the front
on this one I’m going to go with the
12th overall pick and the last of the
quarterbacks now would be B Nicks who I
had in my mock draft yesterday going to
the Denver Broncos 12th overall and got
a lot of push backs saying well theyd
like they like him sure but they’re
going to trade back and they’ll they’ll
move back and then they’ll get bone
Knicks I’ll tell you this Shawn pyton
was not getting cute here Shawn pton
wanted B knck and when he was still on
the board at 12 they made the pick and
they were happy with it here so many
stories about combin visits and pro days
and top 30 visits pton wanted to test
the medal of B nicks’s ability to devise
a game plan and be able to comprehend
what his offense was when they had their
workout with B knck the night before
they offered him three different sheets
of paper with a bunch of different
concepts they said you can study this
and then we’re going to want to quiz you
on it the next day Nicks came in and had
it and was absolutely Nails Sean Payton
talking to him last night he said look
shres he’s the most accurate quarterback
in college football history that’s what
what we’re getting here he’s a guy that
I think I can run my offense with and oh
by the way we still have Zach Wilson we
still have Jared sdam it’s going to
obviously be an interesting room of
young quarterbacks I find it interesting
that Nicks who played six years of
college ball started 61 different
college games and his the most accurate
quarterback he has taken 12th overall
and people are like they reach they
reach look like we talked about with
penck if you need a quarterback if you
want a quarterback it’s really your own
value because it is by far the most
important position on a team so they
didn’t trade back they take him at 12
and I’ll tell you the Broncos are
ecstatic to have bone Nicks as their
quarterback it’s very exciting the AFC
West is going to be rock and roll next
year let’s talk about Drake May let’s do
it because all we heard about was the
Patriots might trade back they may trade
back they may not do it they may go JJ
this they took Drake May there was a no
doubt of the first three picks just went
bang bang bang you know what’s so fun
about this time right now for us in the
media is we did a lot of crossover with
ESPN a lot of NFL Network ESPN love I
was watching reys Davis the other day so
ree Davis sitting down with Rich and
rich just says you know what has your
interest in the draft and Rees Davis who
knows probably more about college
football anybody alive says whoever
drafts Drake May wins the draft that’s
it he is the guy I’ve never seen
anything like it he was doing back flips
for Drake May who frankly I think in the
context of this class has been a little
under celebrated because there’s so many
other shiny objects the PA get D get
Drake May and I think Peter I I think
they get him in this nice time for May
where it’s it’s not post Brady that’s
all over this is not Jay F replacing
replacing Marino is a fresh start fresh
coach this is not the bich Patriots it
is a huge strong cornfed athlete now the
weapons are concerning he’s going to
walk in there he’s going to have to
dodge this dodge that or maybe Jacob
were settis play I don’t even know but I
like that the Patriots made it
assertively obviously you said Sean
Payton like Bon knck gerod Mayo liked
Drake May and they have a new
quarterback in Foxboro he’s huge he’s
strong and my favorite term this draft
season has been Big Game Hunter do you
think the Patriots need a little big
game hunting they were shut out twice
last year at home we got a big game
hunter in New England I think it’s very
exciting it is very exciting and Drake
May is a guy that they fell in love with
and were very comfortable taking him at
three assuming that Jayden D will go
second off the board and to your point
Kyle I fully expect jacobe brassette to
be the guy early on there in New England
as they continue to build that roster
around the quarterback position before
Drake May gets his opportunity to get
out there and play looking sh you start
all the way at the end in B Knicks I’m
going to JJ McCarthy in Minnesota
because this was a guy a prospect that
we all talked about leading up to the
draft and there were so many questions
about his production what what he was
asked to do at Michigan well he’s a
winner intangible all of these things
does that result in him being a pro
football quarterback that can go out
there and win you games JJ McCarthy
doesn’t go in the top five he ends up
going 10th to the Minnesota Vikings who
move up just one spot to get him there
for JJ McCarthy you talk about
intriguing situations how about getting
drafted to the NFL and having Justin
Jefferson on one side Jordan Addison TJ
hackinson when he gets healthy and then
oh yeah we’re going to bring in Aaron
Jones at the running back spot but what
he was able to do at Michigan now you
give him a team that’s loaded with guys
on the offense and his play caller and
Kevin oconnell is huge and what I love
when he got drafted is listening to the
phone call between him and AD DOI Mah
and also Kevin okono talking about him
becoming their new quarterback and how
excited they were I want you guys to
listen here and see what JJ McCarthy had
to
say
froms last exced are to play with him
I’m thrilled I’m thrilled you know I got
to watch him play from across the
sideline

JJ with a little bit of the skull clap
right there you saw excited the family
there nothing better than those
reactions and they got their new
quarterback yes Sam D was there but a
lot of belief in JJ McCarthy he told
those coaches I promise you one thing if
you brought me there we were going to
win and that’s what JJ McCarthy has
represented let’s see if he can do it in
Minnesota Jay who’s the team and who’s
the quarterback that you’re rolling with
with I love all of your picks I mean Bo
Nicks when we talk about JJ McCarthy
Drake may but I’m going with Caleb
Williams I know that seems a little
obvious guys but I’m going with him for
a little bit of a different reason
typically when you’re picking a guy
number one overall he’s coming in with
not a lot of things in the cupboard
right imagine this situation I I maybe
you guys can help me with a little bit
of football history here but I can’t
think of a time where you’ve seen a
quarterback draft a number one overall
walk into a room with a guy like DeAndre
Swift Herbert DJ Moore Kenan Allen Cole
kit he’s not walking into a rebuild like
guys like Trevor Lawrence Zach Wilson
Bryce young held Justin field Troy Amman
I have talked about this in years past
you know he talked about how brutal his
first two years in Dallas so while it’s
exciting and I imagine the pressure and
expectations when you’re in your own
thoughts are overwhelming most
competitors will say they love it but it
is a lot of pressure I do like that we
heard one of his responses was when it
was you know after you won the Heisman
after you know you did what you did with
USC after going number one overall in
the draft what is your next uh line of
business and he said to get to know all
of his teammates names and their family
members and so I think it’s the right
approach it’s the way to endear yourself
uh to the locker room but I am going to
be really interested to see how this
plays out because we should all expect
him to do great uh but sometimes man
those expectations are a little
overwhelming it’s true and listen I I
feel like we haven’t heard from Bryce
Young since last year you know what I’m
saying we were we were covering the
draft last year same reaction yeah it’s
exciting we got him but then what he
showed up for was very difficult I think
Jane makes a great point that this is
not some terrible ref of talent Bears
teams like Caleb walks in and let’s
drive this thing now I have a lot of
thoughts personally on what Caleb means
to Chicago a lot of the reactions last
night a lot of the jokes that people are
making I’m going to get into that the
top of the third hour but for right now
I think Jane is right he shows up in a
loaded just ready to rock and roll real
quick we started the show with penx
where we’ve talked a lot about penx
might have been a little shocking pick
of all but he’s probably not going to
see the field right away a lot of these
guys and you know they’re going to have
to figure it out and Drake May is going
to probably wait behind B but like B
Knicks could win that job he has played
61 college games and basically should
have been a four-year player in the NFL
already and I think he the same age as
Zach Wilson like there’s going to be
expectation for a lot of these guys
Caleb Williams right out of the shoot
like you’re starting day one let’s go
what do you think J he’s going to be out
there and it’s going to be so much fun
to watch and Jane you said it he talked
about caring about the people that are
going to be in that organization but he
also got Roma dun at number nine and we
talked about whether they were going to
go line and what they were going to do
they got another receiver for him to go
alongside what we talked about in Keenan
Allen and DJ Moore so it doesn’t get any
better than that and you talk about in
the first round we said six quarterbacks
go in the first 12 picks all six of them
aren’t going to be fantastic football
players Hall of Famers and all of that
so it’s really hard today this day two
after the draft to say all right this
guy’s going to be successful we have no
idea what’s going to happen but at the
same time it’s awesome to see Caleb
Williams in a situation that he’s
walking into and the weapons that he’s
going to have around him and a Bears
team that caught fire later in the
season whose defense was absolutely
rolling as
well I look at it this with Caleb and
it’s like you’ve got a dunesday but you
also add in Keenan Allen which you
mentioned you also add in uh you have DJ
more you have all this stuff that that
situation in the NFC North for Caleb if
it doesn’t succeed like all this like
there are going to be expectations like
this isn’t one of those where it’s Bryce
young and it’s like all right Carolina
Chicago Bears so to me it’s this is all
the salad it’s it’s not going to be easy
ever you can’t have like the starter
season where you’re like 11 I will say
this though seven and five last year at
USC like that might have been the best
thing for Caleb W like and this whole
pre-draft process where people were
tearing him down a bit because I almost
would rather have a quarterback who’s
been through a little bit adversity like
Michael penx with the knees and the like
okay he’s been through JJ McCarthy we
could do flips and everything 27 and one
it’s never lost a game it’s been this
thing smile the Michigan man the whole
thing like he’s never had that seven
and5 season he’s never had that that
brutal have to overcome so all these
guys situations are interesting and for
Caleb Williams I think the best thing
that might have happened was a seven and
five season last year where people were
TR him throughout the entire campaign
and is what we do we will always compare
JJ and Caleb same draft class same
division play at least twice a year
that’s just what we do 10 years from now
be like man that guy really won that one
maybe it’s JJ I don’t know but right now
the Caleb thing is very exciting the
video of him in a Dun like cool that
could be alltime or it could be alltime
freezing cold takes we don’t know but we
have it we’re going to be seeing that
for
years there it is and I’m just so
excited for and big cat
I I know it’s hard for you and our boy
big cat you guys are longsuffering Bears
fans Matt Eber Flo and Ryan poles have
really been through it but now there’s
this excitement we saw I mean I don’t
know if you guys saw the mockups for the
new stadium right there on the lake with
that incredible view of downtown my
brother lives in Chicago so I got a free
place to say to go check those things
out but it’s so fun to see some optimism
around that team you know a big market
so uh can’t hide money
I can’t hide mine because I don’t have
any
guys Jane’s not worri so you know
everyone’s like where are they going to
park at that Stadium it’s like well
there’s boat docks right there just pull
the boat pull my brother’s yacht up
