Hockey hotbed: Arizona might have lost its NHL team, but push for the sport’s growth continues

We need more rinks. Chandler ice den is at capacity.
People said AZ isn’t good for hockey.
I say it wasn’t given enough time. We had the team for almost 30 years. But for a region that had little to no hockey, there was still some leagues. Inline felt like it picked up in the late 90s. At least I played inline.
The growth is generational we are barely getting to see the second generation of players and fans. It felt like hockey was barely becoming more accessible. It would have only grew with time and good location.
I’m in Tucson going to Glendale was out of the question for a day trip. Almost an extra hour to hour and a half of driving. Tempe was a dream come true for the hockey in me. The games at mullet felt amazing for a pro game.
It makes me sad we may see a a shrink in hockey support. We were just about to build a new facility for U of A and roadrunners. Who knows if that happens. We still don’t even have a rink to skate at now.
