With all the talent in AA Portland, it’s LF Matthew Lugo turning the most heads. Once a top-10 prospect, Lugo is slashing .317/.404/.756/1.160 with 9 XBH in 12 games so far. Lugo, 23, was a 2019 2nd round pick and was a SS/3B before transitioning to LF this season – also the nephew of Carlos Beltran

  1. With Roman Anthony, Kyle Teel, Marcelo Mayer, Blaze Jordan, and Eddison Paulino all being top-20 prospects in the lineup, it’s Lugo doing by far the best so far.

Lugo had a terrific 2022 season with 18 HR, 20 SB, and an .830 OPS in 117 games mostly in A+, but fell off considerably after struggling badly in 2023 at AA.

Seems like he’s made a strong adjustment early at this level as he already has 4 HR’s this year and only had 5 all season in 83 AA games last year.

His positional change is also reflective of positional constraints and not necessarily being incapable of staying at 3B; although he likely wouldn’t develop into more than average defensively there.

  2. Bring him up to be backup at 3B and Reyes mainly be 2B, then backup for Grissom. Give Lugo Valdez’s spot and ship Valdez off to Mordor.
