  1. Of course. Cooper had a really good message and went off over how ridiculous the goalie protection is in the league, but because he used the word “skirts” that’s what everyone will focus on.

Clearly he was trying to say they’re over protected compared to everyone else, but because he used the wrong phrase everyone will completely ignore the message and only focus on that. But that’s how things are on the internet nowadays. People love drama more than anything else.

  2. I commented in there, but it’s worth bringing up in here, Coop should apologize for this. It was very poor wording, that he could have put numerous other ways. After that it should be dead.

With that being said, holy shit I’ve never seen such pearl clutching and crying over such an innocent comment. My wife and the other women who were at our watch party last night didn’t blink twice at the quote and moved on with their lives. I truly wonder how some people on reddit function in the real world, when anything they disagree with or could harm their sensibilities puts them in full on meltdown mode.

  3. Reading through those comments almost gave me an aneurysm. According to them, Coop is a misogynist and every member of r/hockey is the biggest PWHL fan in the world

  4. As a women I have no issue with the wording. The way I understood it he used skirts because the goalies like to put on performances to trick the refs into getting what they want at times

  5. Most of those fans from other fan bases hate our success of recent years so are clutching at anything to put Tampa down.

Coop is the best coach in hockey. Period.

  6. What’s a shame is that’s the only thing they’ll latch on to. Because that’s the internet rage mob cool thing to do, when he really brings up a lot of really good points before that comment.

It’s easy to say I don’t remember Vasy and the Bolts getting these calls, but I’m sure I’ve forgotten my handful. Still sucks.

  7. I don’t think Coopers a bad guy, and I don’t think its really that big of a deal, but I still would have rathered he used a different phrase and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with pointing out outdated language when it’s used. It was a bad choice of words, it’s okay to admit that.

  8. They are seriously overreacting in that sub. They’re acting like he said “I hate all women”.

  9. Yeah let’s allow 1 stupid sentence to erase everything else Cooper has done over the years that prove the guy is absolute class.

  10. People are too hyper fixated on his choice of words instead of the holistic rhetoric. He’s saying that they should just play hockey and not have to worry about their toe being out of place. r/hockey throws a tantrum if there is the slightest sign of misogyny, even if that isn’t what was the intention to convey.

  11. I’m gonna throw my goaltenders stick down in protest! (and call for a disallowed goal)

  12. /r/hockey is full of salty fans of Canadian teams that haven’t won dick since the Clinton Administration.

  13. I’m not sure why people love to be offended over every little harmless comment. Strange world we live in.

  14. It’s 2024. I’ve been thoroughly informed that men and women both wear skirts. I see no problem with the comment. That sub is embarrassing.

  15. Lmao. I have no dog in this race and that thread isn’t nearly as bad as I thought it’d be according to this thread. Most of the top comments are making dumb jokes and there was like one or two who were annoyed and even they weren’t too bad. Heck there even was someone saying how Reddit in general won’t like the comment.

  16. Im SURE im far left of 90 percent of this sub or /r/hockey… and i watched the video before reading comments. i didn’t pick up on anything misogynistic whatsoever. its old timey colloquialism, clearly no harm was intended. could you argue its rooted on a misogynistic belief set? sure… but of ALL things to be upset about, this aint it. plus coop strikes me as the type of person who probably WOULD change his language if people were legitimately upset.

  17. he could have literally said anything else which is why the comment is so weird, but at the end of the day it’s nothing. if this comment sways one’s opinion about the man, the sport or anything in between, they are not mentally strong.

  18. I’m a huge Coop fan and I think he’s one of the greatest coaches ever. But he can’t be saying shit like that. Do better buddy. We all say stupid shit at times, it doesn’t mean you are garbage. Say you’re sorry and move on. We still love you in Tampa.

  19. R/hockey is pretty pathetic. Everyone is a saint behind a keyboard. They can all fuck off

  20. Coop is not a misogynist, and his comment is not a “threat to women in the sport” like that sub is trying to make it sound like.

He’s gonna tell it how it is, and he’s clearly unhappy with the rulings. The concept of a skirt does imply femininity, but it also implies things like ballet tutus, and just a general feeling of fragility. Those implications are rooted it femininity, yes. But that’s not what Coop is drawing upon with this statement.

What Coop is saying here is that he feels it is unfair that players are given a much shorter leash in terms of their contact with goalies, compared to the notoriously harsh environment of the playoffs that the league has created. He’s making that comparison and using the imagery of skirts to do so. Furthermore, the idea of hockey players, specifically goalies with their extra padding, wearing a skirt on the ice is a completely ridiculous idea. He’s drawing a comparison between how ridiculous that mental image is, and how ridiculous the disallowed goals are. I don’t think he’s trying to say “goalies are like women, they’re so soft.”

Whether you think his comment is misogynistic is kinda up to your own interpretation. This is mine.

I think context goes a long way here. Coop is a former law student, he knows how to carefully craft his words. He has one of the most respectful and personable public images among coaches in any sport. If Coop was seriously using misogynistic rhetoric to prove a point here, that’d be wildly out of line with his character.

  21. It’s even more funny when you realize that 95% of the people who are upset by this are men.

  22. Love Coop, greatest coach of all time. He deserves criticism for this, but he was upset and I have put my foot in my mouth plenty of times in my life. Overall, a headline that blows over in a day or two

  23. I didn’t hear this as a knock against women more so that skirts don’t provide a lot of protection and that’s what he’s insinuating.

  24. Ugh, I hate how the message of this quote is completely ignored because of the not greatest choice in wording. He’s making a damn good point and it still stands whether people are pissy about it or not

  25. Woman fan here, I personally wasn’t offend and felt like it was a bad choice of words. I can see how people are and could be upset by the choice of the words skirts. However with the context of the game and the full clip it changes how you view that statement. I interpreted that at this rate the goalies don’t even have to do anything and can be pampered while the other players are in the trenches!

I don’t know a ton about hockey but maybe it’s time to reevaluate goalie protection/interference penalties. The moment with Duclair didn’t appear to be intentional. Why couldn’t it have been a minor penalty instead of overturning the goal? Also the second clip I couldn’t see anyone touch FLA goalie! It was a close call but again not intentional and looked like their goalie was throwing a tantrum like a toddler! I’m very close to going full tinfoil hat and claiming that the game was rigged against us…
