For the Niño Doubters

Obviously Nando has been struggling these past couple weeks but keep the fucking faith. Fernando Tatis Jr. is that dude. And honestly, for those giving up on Manny and Nando, you realize that these two guys are our whole franchise. If you're not rocking with them I'm not really sure what you're doing in this sub.

  1. Without his 1 year of absence, he would’ve developed better plate discipline than right now….

  2. Yes, the Savant page looks great, but we’re at 173 games now (since he returned last year) of Tatis significantly underperforming his expected metrics and hitting marginally above league average (~115 wRC+). I don’t think anybody is really doubting him, but it’s valid for people to express concern about what they’ve seen

And the same goes for Manny. His Statcast metrics have taken a big step back the last couple years, and he’s at ~110 wRC+ since the start of last year. He’s also now on the wrong side of 30. So, again, can’t really blame people for being a little bit worried

  3. Nando’s production relies heavily on mashing lefties and so far in the small sample size of 2024 (33 PA’s) he’s slashed an abysmal .083/.333/.208 (Career vs LHP: .293/.397/.551)

From what I can tell, the problem seems to be the lack of protection with Cronenworth batting behind him, who’s hit RHP well but has been terrible vs LHP this year. Guys are just throwing Nando junk to get around him, and it looks like he’s getting frustrated by it and turning in some bad ABs.

For his career vs LHP, Tatis’ K% is 22.9% and his BB% is 13.9%.

In 2024 vs LHP, Tatis’ K% is at 21.2% and his BB% has shot up to 27.3%.

That’s almost half of his plate appearances vs lefties ending without a ball in play. And all of the exit velocity and barrels on savant mean nothing if he’s not putting bat to ball.

I’m optimistic he’ll be fine if Schildt/AJ can figure out to protect him better. He’s doing a decent job against RHP and his K% overall is down, but he’s gotta be able to take advantage of LHPs like he has in the past and that won’t happen if they’re able to keep pitching around him to get to Crone.

  4. People think this is a 60 game Covid season. Things will start falling Nando’s way. That’s just math.

Meanwhile guys like Kim are worshiped for having bottom 3-15% in many critical hitting metrics last year. Fandom is bizarre at times.

  5. Tatis is a stud, his new swing has slowed him down a bit for sure. Main thing I feel like is I see less line drives and more grounders

  6. He swings at too much trash. Machado does the same thing. Couple that with both of them getting way to homer hungry and you get, well, exactly what we are watching.

  7. Honestly think his average should be higher with better luck. Baseball is all about hitting it hard and hoping for the best. Most of his contact is hard as hell

  8. Saying he hasn’t played particularly well recently isn’t the same as saying he sucks, way too many people can’t see the difference

  9. Fo real, who is doubting Tatis Jr? He is literally one of the most consistent players we have. Players are allowed to have bad weeks, if not everyone will be batting .500….

Also, a lot of his outs have been on good contacts…he’s fine.

Im worry about X, Kim and Machado really…
