Elly on MLB’s team of the month… as a utility player??

  1. This year Mookie has 25 games at SS and 15 at 2B, so if you’re going based on pure position, then it makes perfect sense to swap him and Elly.

But I suspect they’re saying Mookie has been the best guy who plays shortstop, and Elly has been one of the 10 best players (but not as good as Mookie), so Mookie gets the spot and Elly gets the “Utility” spot as essentially a wild card.

Makes more sense to me to do it your way, though

  2. Mookie has an OPS of 1.101 and has already racked up 3.1 WAR in 32 games played.

Elly has .962 OPS and 1.8 WAR in 30 games played.

And defensively, despite making some bonkers plays, his early spotty defense means that Elly’s defensive runs saved rate is still under league average right now (on pace for -9 runs saved for the year)

Elly is awesome, but Mookie has been better so far this year.

  3. These are typically chosen by main position first. Because Mookie has been statistically better than Elly in almost every category, they put him at short. Elly’s at U as a “Best of the rest” choice.

That’s all there is to them putting guys where they are on the list.
