Probably bullshit. He’s going to sign elsewhere just out of spite.
Mike and Shane just addressed it on Canes Cast too. Basically said that they would both be shocked if RBA wasn’t back. Mike also mentioned that, based on his experience as a sports reporter in Buffalo, this comes across as one side feeding the media a story to get things moving. They also mentioned that Rod himself is focused on the next series and that there is plenty of time to get this done (which Rod mentioned last night).

My conspiracy theory: this is being stoked by Ron Francis. It ramped up after the Seattle job opened up and the mouthpieces have been media members who typically were close to him (DeCock, Dreger) and former players very close to him (Weekes, O’Neil).
Whole thing feels like a distraction. Contract negotiations while you’re trying to coach in the playoffs?
