“How good teams in the NFL stay good forever.”

I love this summary quote about the Lions draft, from Nick Baumgardner:

“They sat there and waited and got starters because other people who did it—who made mistakes in other areas and didn't take care of their roster—had to do something else and pushed starters down. So they just sat there and feasted on them. That is how good teams in the NFL stay good forever.”

  1. Well the picks still have yet to be starters but I think I can speak for the fanbase in saying we’re all excited to see what they do.

  2. The 49ers have been a blue blood franchise for a long time. They’ve remained consistently good for the past few years because they are VERY good (or rather lucky) at drafting.

  3. Just like it works with QBs, I really hope that there’s somebody working under Brad Holmes and learning his way of doing things so that we can keep this good work going.

  4. Ravens come to mind. Steelers too. Both are really good at finding OL and defensive talent. Like to the point that they can make playoffs with randoms at the QB position in the past.

  5. To be honest, I do not think its a reasonable expectation to stay “good” forever in the NFL as it is today, you have to create windows with high chances to win because of talent, then go for it during those windows.

But regardless, strong drafting always helps in every situation to at least stay competitive.

  6. It excites me to think of the Lions as one of those teams with an advantage to not just become great, but positioned to remain great. To become a dynasty franchise that picks great players because they’re in a position to do so and so maintain that greatness as injury and free agency happen and time marches on.

It excites me to think of the Lions as a franchise that embodies ‘Grit’ and that embodiment draws gritty players, to have great players excited to join the team and add to that greatness and grittiness.

Mostly, though, it excites me to think of a new NFL tradition being born where the Detroit Lions somehow, every draft, manage to jump ahead of the Packers to steal a greatly desired player.
