Let the competition begin: Key battles on Packers’ roster

  1. Over the past 3 drafts the Packers have made a league leading 35 picks so this should be a highly competitive camp.

OL is wide open from the starting lineup to the numerous players fighting over the depth spots and is the position group I’m most interested in.

New year, new scheme, new DC that brought in some new defensive staff. Not only do the rookies have something to prove but even the veterans need to prove themselves all over again.

The more I look at the roster on defense the more I feel like not only will the DL be a rotation but so will the 11th man that is typically filled by the NB. Keisean Nixon played the 3rd most defensive snaps on the team last season but while it’s early and I’m admittedly frequently wrong I see a rotation that will vary based on matchups and situation.

**I believe the hope within the organization is that behind the DL rotation we have 6 full time players:**

LB Quay Walker and Edgerrin Cooper

S Xavier McKinney and Javon Bullard

CB Jaire Alexander and Eric Stokes or Carrington Valentine

**But instead of NB Keisean Nixon being essentially a full time starter trailing only Quay and Kenny Clark’s snap count we will actually see a shuffling with snaps up for grabs depending on who stands out, the down/distance, the specific players/schemes we’re matching up against.**

Could be Nixon in the slot, could be McDuffie or Ty’Ron Hopper in 3 LB base, could be Williams/Oladapo/Johnson in a big nickel 3 safety look, Kalen King/Ballentine could challenge Nixon for slot snaps, we could even see Jaire, Stokes and Valentine all on the field together in obvious passing downs. Their are numerous possibilities.

The interior of the DL seems pretty well set with a rotation of Kenny Clark/TJ Slaton at NT and Devonte Wyatt/Karl Brooks/Colby Wooden at DT. Enagbare’s health will be monitored while Rashan Gary, Preston Smith, LVN are locked in and the question will become if Brenton Cox or anyone else from remaining group of DE can crack the 53.

  2. Bullard definitely has the inside track at safety, but its going to be a wide open competition, and it seems like an underdog wins these a lot of the time. I remember MVS beating out EQ and another higher draft pick. Lots of young guys fighting for playing time on this team, it should be an exciting camp.

  3. I think most of the roster will be in competition. The only players that I think have starting spots locked up are Love, Jacobs, Reed, Jenkins, Tom on offense and Clark, Gary, Alexander, McKinney on defense. Quay and Cooper are probably also locks to start at LB, but I think there will be some amount of competition to figure out their exact roles there.
