  1. OF Christian Yelich (low back strain)
Expected return: As soon as this week
The star outfielder took a significant step on May 6 when he took batting practice on the field in Kansas City to test his stiff back, an issue he has battled since his mid-20s with the Marlins. The latest bout came amid a torrid start to the season, knocking him out of the Brewers’ April 12 series opener in Baltimore. Yelich had already been doing better running and throwing before a minor breakthrough on May 3 at Wrigley Field, when he had his best session yet swinging the bat in the cage. His goal, he said, is to play before the end of the Brewers’ current road trip, though the Brewers will first discuss whether a short Minor League rehab assignment will be beneficial.

“We’ll see where we’re at [after Yelich takes batting practice on the field],” manager Pat Murphy said. “‘Yeli’ is a consummate pro. He knows his body, he knows himself, and I trust him.” (Last updated: May 6)
