force a game seven they went on a 27-2 run in the first quarter and it was pretty much over after that Adam you’re the Denver guy so I just want to start there what went wrong for the Nuggets well a lot everything possible um but it really was a reminiscent of game two it followed the exact same script you know the Nuggets came out to a 9-2 start you kind of thought that this was okay put doubt in them hit him and then there was a timeout and Denver came out of that timeout and you credit the Wolves defense they’ve been aggressive all series they’ve been getting into your space but on top of the great plays defensively that Minnesota made in this game playing with desperation and intensity Denver matched them with shooting themselves in the foot repeatedly and this is a series where momentum is is huge both teams struggle to score on the others in the half court but really get things going every time they get a stop and get to attack cross matches the Timberwolves got some momentum going and it snowballed that entire first quarter there was nothing Denver could do to stop the bleeding for about 10 minutes there and the game was over then to be honest with you yeah you mentioned that the Nuggets shot themselves in the foot I’m surprised they hit their foot cuz they weren’t hitting anything else with anything else that they were shooting at I mean it was it was they I thought actually Minnesota their defense was awesome I actually thought Denver got a few good open looks early in this game that they just missed and that really took the wind out of their sails and what’s interesting about this Timberwolves defense is they’re so good and they are so overwhelming that I feel like it almost puts more pressure on players to make the open ones cuz you don’t know the next time you’re going to get an open one so you’re almost just like wow this one’s open this is crazy where’s Jen McDaniels I have no idea like let me just shoot this thing and you know I we we’ll talk about the Jamal Murray part of it here in a second but I also didn’t love the Nuggets lack of the the the quick Snappy decisions the strong movements the strong cutting that stuff that was there the last three games that Denver won one was not there and I don’t know if it’s so much of well look this was game seven for Minnesota they were you knew that they were going to come out with more intensity than Denver I just didn’t expect that that level of intensity to never get there for the Nuggets uh after and maybe it was just that 27 to2 run in the first quarter and that was basically that what drained him I don’t know maybe that’s all it was I think both of both of the things you’re mentioning are the same one of these it’s about Denver getting sped up by the Minnesota defense Minnesota was so aggressive and intense in this game in a way that Denver was not able to respond to and it led to quick shots it led to bad decision making and I think what you’re talking about with it’s almost hard because you get an open shot you don’t know when you’ll get another one I think a lot of that is the open shots were out of rhythm because the pace of this game was so fast it was almost like I gotta shoot quick and it’s like well that one you didn’t most of the time you do but that one you didn’t you actually had time so I think I credit Minnesota for just the intensity that they brought and for Denver look they had pedal to the medal for three games their back was against the wall those were three must-win games in a row it’s rare in a series that you get three must-win games before a series is over Denver got that this was the first not must-win game they have had since game three and they played like it they played with major let down energy yeah and I guess that’s the next obvious place to go to is really just giving credit to the Timberwolves you mentioned it looked like game two it really it looked like the first two games of the series with that intensity at they were they they playing with uh jayen McDaniels picking up at half court making plays all the way from there to the rim there was one play I think it was in the first quarter picks up Jamal Murray at half court just he’s on him up until he gets across the three-point line Murray passes it off the the ball kind of pings around Jamaal Murray gets back the ball goes around to yic screen McDaniel still on his hip Jamal Murray finally kind of squirrels his way away from McDaniels and he kind of goes into that floater that he loves to get to and then all of a sudden at nowhere McDaniels is not even from the chase down block he’s in front of Jamal Murray out of no I still I’ve watched the play like a million times I’m like I don’t know how he does it uh and he ends up blocking the shot and then those blocks leted the misses uh and transition opportunities uh and Minnesota just again like those first two wins they did all of almost all their scoring in the full court everything off of Misses everything off of turnovers everything off of steals and they are just so overwhelming when they get into that kind of game and I I I’m curious what you think about this it just felt to me like you can almost guess how each one of these games were going to go based off of like the first six or seven minutes it just feels like what both of these teams want to play differently and whoever kind of gets the tone set early kind of just has it for the rest of these games well the way I would put it I mean like I said it’s such a momentum series that there is compounding interest on every run you get because both teams have such a hard time stopping the other team when there’s a run I mean look we’ve had six games in the series they’ve all been blowouts you know like they have not necessarily been close games a couple of them have been 10-point games but they rarely got closer than that it was just nice 10-point cushion but they’ve been blowouts and I think it just has a lot to do with that momentum and you know one other thing that I think is interesting about this game from a t tactical standpoint joic has absolutely cooked for the you know games three four and five in this one they did what the Lakers did throughout their series which was we’re going to just not let yic beat us and try to send hard fast doubles early on and see if they can make plays behind and and look Denver shot 19% from three last night they got a lot of open looks off of that those actions specifically but jokic also I thought look to quote unquote make the right play they’re gonna double well I’m just gonna quickly get the ball out of my hands I’m going to draw the double and then go it clearly was not a night for Jamal Murray who was atrocious in this game it was not a Night for Michael Porter who was atrocious in this game and I think that in game seven if you if you’re yic and they’re going to send a hard double can you sit back and just say hey I’m gonna make the right play and let those guys go you probably have to have a shorter sort of um patience in game seven and say hey I’m gonna play this right way but if this thing starts to go six seveno lead from Minnesota you got to score through the double team and you got to be aggressive and I think he will be yeah you got to look like what you looked like in the third quarter of game five right and and you were able to wait until the Third well not really weight he was great in the first half of that game too but you know what I mean it’s a great point I do wonder if making the right play would have been the right play if Jamaal Murray had just made more of those shots though because a lot of those shots were in his wheelhouse just back [ __ ] floaters missing three-pointers and things like that and we do have to have the Jamal Murray conversation it’s not been a good series for him the timberwol or I’m sorry the nuggets have won every game that he’s shot better than 47% and they’ve lost all the games that he hasn’t shot well and there’s a lot more that goes into the series than just that but it’s a very important thing when you’re second best player isn’t playing like your second best player and you’ve gotten an awesome series from Aaron Gordon and all these other things and joic has been terrific obviously but you know this to me game seven the jokic has felt the I don’t know he’s felt the pressure but the pressure has been applied to Nika yic right he’s been the subject of debate about MVPs do you deserve them until you get the championship he gets the championship last year all these things but for the most part Jamaal Murray has avoided the pressure cooker at a national level like he’s a sympathetic figure right he missed the entire that one season with the ACL injury uh comes back to win the championship yep and then and then before the ACL injury he was an awesome playoff performer somebody that people love just could just go Flames out of nowhere in the postseason he was kind of a surprise in that way um this is to me the first time that he is under the gun it’s hey Aaron Gordon’s doing his thing nikic is doing this thing he’s a Bonafide we know what that guy’s about best player in the world no doubt about it what are you going to do Jamal Murray cuz this is the the moment like you just you’re coming off a really bad game six he’s going to have to have a really big game seven and I don’t think there’s ever been this much pressure applied to him so I I was asking this you know of some nuggets fans earlier he’s played 11 games in the playoffs how many do you think he has scored over 25 points not a crazy number 25 I can’t remember one he’s had one game in this playoffs over 25 points I mean you said it’s been a tough series for him the first round was horrible from him what you remember is two game winners which obviously incredible game winners especially in game two he was atrocious in that game until he hit about three or four shots down the stretch there that were big including the biggest one and then in game five you know he had a pretty solid game in that one I think maybe his best or second best game of this entire playoffs but that but Murray just has not been himself um throughout this entire playoff I will say after game two which was probably his lowest moment you know shot below 20% the defense was swarming we all remember that game it reminded us of this one the Nuggets got three days off and he came out and had maybe his best game of the playoffs the nuggets have three days off going into game seven and I think for him with the injuries he’s a crude late in the season and then obviously in the postseason that three days is gonna uh be really important to him but let’s not kid ourselves Jamaal Murray has never been an All-Star he’s a very good player but he’s a little bit of a two-faced player even in the regular season you don’t know which version of him you’re going to get but in the playoffs he has always stepped up when it’s mattered this playoffs he’s pushed that theory to its Zenith literally only stepped up what it matters so guess what game seven matters the most we’ll see if he has it in him one more time I hope we get one close game in this series I think we will game sevens are just inherently have to be close and clunky I mean physical I I have a feeling we’re headed for like an 85 89 game that’s beautiful that’s music baby let’s go that’s Miami Heat basketball right there right that’s heat culture yeah I got to rep for something without them in the playoffs um all right uh speaking of rooting for something in regards to the Miami Heat do the Cavs really believe they can bring Donovan Mitchell back next season we’ll talk about that next here on locked on NBA today’s the five star rating and review we’re going to talk about which teams have the most capacity for chaos later on but one of those teams is probably going to be the Cleveland Cavaliers who were eliminated from the playoffs earlier this week and now face questions about what happens with Donovan Mitchell JB bicker staff and the rest of the roster so I guess we could start there uh how far away do you think that the Cavs are from being real contenders because I think that’s an important question to ask before we kind of get to these other things I think the Cavs are in one of the toughest spots you can be in as a franchise in that they’re really good but clearly not good enough to contend and the pieces on their roster to me are not of the type where it’s like one piece away you really have to rebuild parts of the roster that doesn’t mean a full-on rebuild it’s really more of a sideways rebuild you’ve got to figure out which pieces fit together and then add you know use your uh redundant pieces to bring in you know to fill those gaps but but that’s one of the hardest spots to be in because you know you got to be really astute in the types of players they have to be available the types of players and let’s just put it together they’re four best players two of them are point guards who can’t play great defense and are a little bit undersized and two of them are centers who play better as centers and are mostly rolling bigs and rim protector bigs so you have that overlap of skill set and you know so it’s hard for you to Pivot from where you are the good news is all four of those players are players that every team would love yeah so you do have some value there but a little bit of a tight RPP walk a Threading the needle act that has to happen here um for them to figure it out yeah I don’t know that I would freak out if I was Cleveland right and I actually feel pretty good about where we’re at because you have great resources to your point uh the difference is like like you just said like the resources are great but they don’t necessarily fit together but it’s really cool that you were able to acquire all those resources I think it’s going to be really it it it’ll be very manageable to Pivot it’s almost like a startup company it’s like okay this thing that we were doing over here doesn’t work let’s pivot and use kind of like this VC money that we had to kind of go in this new Direction and I think the Cavaliers are there but just like that startup you only got one chance to do it right like you only really have one shot to Pivot and kind of make it a smooth pivot and go in that new Direction and so are you able to and and this is going to be difficult because you don’t know what you’re going to do with Donovan Mitchell right you want to try to extend him he might not do it and then you have to ask yourself some serious questions if that’s not the case but there are teams that would like Garland there are teams that would like Jared Allen you could kind of build this thing back around Mitchell and Moy for a roster that works so I think that that is definitely possible but then you have to figure out what are you doing with Donovan Mitchell and I hear I keep hearing this Adam and I know I know you are too it’s like well you got to trade Donovan Mitchell if he doesn’t sign the extension or you risk him walking away for nothing and my argument is well is one more season of Donovan Mitchell nothing Donovan Mitchell is a really good player that ain’t nothing right and this is a wide open Eastern Conference he was the best player on the court in those in that Cav Celtics series like if you make the Right Moves around the margins even for one year you can make a run to the Eastern Conference Finals and if you’re in the Eastern Conference Finals you could be in the NBA Finals like that ain’t nothing you know and so I do think yeah so well here’s the thing that I think when people say that because I’m with you I hate when players are so ready just to blow it up like in the NBA if you don’t have a slam dunk it’s like reset everything just like get draft picks and there is a middle ground teams like the Miami have pivoted without having to go in fullon tank mode even for a single year like it the the Spurs have done this it can be done but here’s the thing this it’s hard to Envision the Cavs were only one year away this year right like oh they were so close to this or that you first oftentimes without a like one of the three or four best players but the Cavs do not have they do not have a top five player in the NBA I don’t think any even close if you don’t have that guy you have to figure out what your identity is and start building that and then usually it takes takes a while to piece together like okay we got to add this piece this piece and this piece and for the Cavs right now I don’t know that they even have an identity if they were to make a trade you know this off season is it realistic to say that it would be a trade so great that they could start to assemble an identity and figure that out in short order and then get to a playoff next year where that comes to fruition I think you could build around the Donovan Mitchell Evan Mo Twan game and shooting and stuff the problem with that is if you think that Don Mitchell walks away in a year then your identity goes kaput with it right so that’s sort of the argument but you could get like if you can go get a wing and a power forward who can help Mo play in space because like jiren Allen didn’t play in that in that last game against the Celtics Moy was playing in space as a center and scored 33 points and he looked awesome and he was doing some of it in isolation kind of scoring over Jason Tatum and stuff like that there’s definitely something to do here I’m not against trading donalan Mitchell like you if you don’t if he doesn’t ass sign the extension you have to explore it you have to take the phone calls you don’t just plug the C out of the wall right but my rule for star for trading a star player is you better be getting a chance at getting a star Talent back and if all it is is Austin Reeves and ruy haimura that’s coming back for you if you’re the Cavs then that’s not good enough I’d rather just have him stay for a year and just see what happens you know and and then maybe you’re able to convince him in that year to resign the way that Paul George resigned in Oklahoma City even though he was telling everybody he was going to go to Los Angeles you know it’s like why not like it’s not you don’t just open it up to bidding sell it the highest bidder and call it like there is a world where you just say you know what screw it we’re going to call the Bluffs we’re going to just run this back for a year and you know eight months of good basketball is something I think there’s a fallacy that fans in the NBA in particular often fall into which is that it’s no risk to just reset the clock like there’s no risk you know like let’s just blow it up and there’s no risk but teams get on that treadmill and stay there sometimes for an awful long time you know you never know what kind of draft you’re going to have you get a pick and a draft and you get the number one pick and it’s Anthony benon oh by the way that was the Cav draft that had that one um so I I agree with you there’s time you can be patient you don’t want to just give for no return but I also think there’s another piece of this which is the NBA’s Sal new salary cap newly negotiated CBA I think that it always takes a couple years for people to really figure out what that looks like and there’s always a world where Donovan Mitch Mitchell gets into next year let’s say the Cavs are clearly not going to win it they have a year like they have this year but maybe with a little bit more of oh but we’re building towards something that could grow there’s a world where there’s just not a market for Donovan Mitchell the same way he anticipates especially in one of the markets he was you know rumored to want to go to New York has Jaylen Brunson now maybe Miami finds somebody between now and then and it’s possible that the only teams that really have the desire and will to make give him the long-term durm when it comes up is teams that he has no interest in so I think there’s a reason for Cleveland I don’t think they should run the same team back I think you need to make a decision on one of your guards and one of your bigs and try to pick a lane and build something around it and see what you have and if it doesn’t work out come February I’m sure someone’ll take Donovan Mitchell off your hands if you need to do you have a favorite Donovan Mitchell landing spot I don’t because I don’t like playing the game to be honest with you like these things man they they just take so long to happen that I just I get worn out talking about them so not really all right well then we’re done talking about it we’re gonna Orlando can I say Orlando they need some scoring you can’t that was you actually can’t no that would not be fun no come on too close too close to home you’re just like hey man why are you three hours north of 95 just come come down to Miami buddy um what about this what about Jamal Murray from Donan Mitchell we get a bad game seven are we are we close to getting Jamal Murray out of here that would be pretty crazy that would be pretty crazy I didn’t even think about that that’s nuts um I like the Rockets I heard that one kind of popped up like would you trade Jaylen green for Donovan Mitchell for that immediate upgrade that’s kind of interesting to me but also J Jaylen green for Donovan Mitchell I mean yeah well you’d have to probably put other stuff in there if you’re Houston but yeah that would be the idea but I don’t know do the Cavs want I still don’t know what the has one that’s the other part too is like do you want players back do you want picks back I think you would want young players that fit with the new build because I think you would want to make a run at it but whatever um which teams which other teams might blow it up this offseason we’ll talk about that which means it’s time to countdown to the week with our weekly Power Rankings not a system player I am a system [Music] player Power Rankings Go Power Rankings it is our five teams with the most capacity for chaos in the NBA honorable mentions Adam I’ve got the Sacramento Kings because too early too early no way do you really believe it I never I will never doubt the Sacramento King’s capacity for chaos and I don’t think you should either they shouldn’t do anything and that’s why it would be chaotic if they did do something if they all of a sudden say you know what we were never going to trade Keegan Murray but now we will and uh and we’re trying to make some moves we’re going to lose Malik monk we need to add something like I don’t know I just never counting out the Sacramento Kings never counting them out it it feels I if hey you know what maybe this is where it is this is the Donovan Mitchell destination maybe that’s what it is is let’s get crazy here it’s like hey that that hasn’t worked for the literally the Cavs it didn’t work for the Portland Trailblazers with McCullum and Dam like maybe it’ll work for us like well hey Minnesota gets the win on in game seven you know maybe Twin Towers becomes in Vogue in the Western Conference oh and they go with Jared Allen well or I mean actually honestly there you yeah you’re not traded Moy Jared Allen yeah this doesn’t sound that smart uh my other honorable mention is the Detroit Pistons because they lost like a million games in a row then they go from number one pick in positioned in the lottery to the number five pick and it just feels like they are ripe to do something crazy and desperate because they are very very desperate right now so who knows um but they’re only an on mention because I don’t know that they have the resources to just do something all that crazy I mean trading Cade would be the example of that like yeah this is what I mean about you can get stuck on the treadmill and I like Kate he would be a second draft guy for me you know if I were a young team I would be willing to do that but maybe there is a team that like a Cavs that is getting rid of you know top tier Talent Donovan Mitchell for example and maybe at Detroit Pistons that says you know what we don’t have the stomach for another seven-year rebuild let’s just see if we can get some kind of crazy lightning in the bottle team this year right uh so those are the honorable mentions number five the Cleveland Cavaliers we already talked about all right yeah just because it could go it could go one or the other direction with them it’s either going to be trade Donovan Mitchell and just sort of rebuild around Garland and Moy and everything you had before you had Donovan Mitchell or you trade those guys and you try to build around Donovan Mitchell for a year maybe you sign him new extens or something there’s just a lot of there’s a lot of plates on sticks right now uh not a lot of cap space they’re they’re they’re a roster like they’re they’re a trade team because they have all their guys signed yeah it feels like again just they can go in a lot of different directions number four the New Orleans Pelicans yeah man this is that’s this is a good list yeah David Griffin out here basically saying put me on your chaos list because it’s going to be chaotic here we’re going to make changes I’ve done we’ve seen this what this team is I’m ready to make some changes I don’t know what that looks like I don’t really know what I honestly don’t even know what this team needs it just it just sort of needs like a it needs its ceiling to get bumped up I feel like but really difficult to do that I like the ceiling because I like all of their piece let’s just go through it I love obviously Zion Williamson your your whole fate hinges on him I don’t think you’re jumping ship on him no just because yes he’s never healthy hasn’t been in great shape is this a did he turn a corner this year you know in that regard and kind of see the work ethic it takes and how serious he needs to treat his body I think you have to bank on that I love uh obviously herb Jones every team in the NBA wants one and there’s not many of him so to and now you have Trey Murphy who everybody loves who’s a more shooter version offensive version of that but you’ve got him like that’s to me is a great core Brandon Ingram is the piece to me that it feels like has expired there I if you’re banking on him to come back more motivated more locked in more healthy more of a leader and all those things there’s a lot of ifs there and you make room for Murphy and Jones to kind of hit those ceilings right like you want I think those guys need to start and I think there is room to move Brandon Ingram they need to get more efficient in terms of their shot chart right more threes less of the mid-range stuff that they get so accustomed to um they got to figure out what Zion is like do you ever want him playing Center do you only want him playing Power Forward how big do you want to be you kind of have to figure that part out of it and then next to him that could be good and uh and I think you gotta ask yourself about CJ McCollum like I his leadership and everything that he’s infused in that roster a couple years ago is great but he’s obviously getting to this other stage of his career can you almost flip that and the Ingram piece to something that makes a little bit more sense for this roster going forward um it’ll be really interesting number three the Atlanta Hawks are you trading Trey young are you trading deur are you not trading any of them you got the number one pick what are you doing so much so much chaos capacity with this team um I don’t know that they should trade Trey young but I also don’t know yeah I don’t what are you getting for Trey young I don’t know that his value has ever like been this low and off of Trey young right off of Trey I mean if if they really hate him that much in that building then yeah trade Trey Young for Austin Reeves and have fun but I don’t know what you’re getting for Deon Murray either and it’s going to be really hard for this but that’s what makes this number one pick so interesting because if you pair that number one pick with all that stuff if I’m the Hawks I’m chopping the number one pick I’m calling Brooklyn and I’m saying would you take it from maau Bridges yeah I don’t know but that’s the sort of move I would be making of I’m Atlanta but a lot of capacity for chaos here number two the Los Angeles Lakers um the key word here is capacity I don’t think that LeBron James is leaving I still am skeptical about all these reports that he could go play with bronnie somewhere that he actually really that whatever I still think all of this is just posturing to get the best contract possible from the Lakers but if he is a free agent then the capacity for him to leave is there and that would definitely be chaotic if you’re the Lakers because you’ve built your entire brand right now around LeBron James so if he leaves that’s gone so that’s why he’s number two um number one the Golden State Warriors oh man this was a good list they’re on here because our favorite Trio they’re number one because their favorite Trio Steph Draymond and Clay could break up and that would be the most chaotic thing of all if that team broke up but even beyond that you got the Andrew Wiggins thing like are they gonna try to shop him can they even shop him like what do you have to attach to Andrew Wiggins to get somebody to take that contract you’ve got the Chris Paul piece over here like they could wave him for and just for nothing or they could try to trade him and they can even bump up their salary uh payroll even more if they wanted to go in that direction they got all those young pieces are they going to try to trade them package them for somebody that’s an immediate help you’ve got Steph Curry applying pressure to that front office he says he wants to be competitive and wants to win what does that look like I’ve got the number I got the Warriors number one here this one almost feels it’s funny because when you I was thinking about what list you put together I didn’t even think of them because it was almost a foregone conclusion I just I know Steph Curry said he wants to run it back and wants you know wants the guys but to me there’s seldom been a more clear it’s over moment for a team than this year’s Warriors like it just so clearly to me is over that running it back sounds absurd but then when you talk about how big it would be to trade things I think Draymond Green can still make an impact but I’ve always thought he was best with Steph Curry what team could he also have that impact I I just I’m skeptical this Klay Thompson him not coming back back to me again feels like the right move but then where does he go and then that Chris Paul move look some team might talk themselves into a 31 million oneof for Chris Paul but even that to me seems a little dicey so I don’t know this one feels like it’s going to be um for sure going to be a blowup but it also feels like it’ll go more with a whimper go you know this this blowup will go more with a whimper with Joe Lake up I’ll never rule out like let’s go swing big like would they go trade for Donovan Mitchell that doesn’t even make sense for their roster but would they just do it anyway you know it’s it’s there there’s that hunger in that off in that building to keep winning and try to outsmart everybody else in the league whether or not they are actually doing it or not and uh there is a capacity here because it just feels like all the parts are moving Parts here right now except for Steph Curry of course uh so that’s it the most chaotic teams uh at least the capacity to do so this offseason there’s the list there you have it that’s it for us today thanks for making locked on NBA your first listen every day every dayers make
