yeah plenty more chances for that that’s right but on this Friday episode you know we have spent the week digging into all of the hard questions it’s been general manager week we’ve talked about the ufas who to sign who not to sign the veterans oh good lord we survived the goal tending conversation so today we’re just going to dip our toes in the water with some other topics about the Predators and across the league we’re going to do some takes from a hat and share some big feelings on this Friday before we dive into that though want to let you know today’s episode is brought to you by Game what we think needs to happen next season but there were some really fun and sweet off I things that happened this week that I feel like on a Friday we should take note of and I figure we should kick it off with Ryan McD’s big news so what happened with Ryan MCD this week Emma Ryan MCD graduated from college we love that for him he love that he played college hockey obviously at the University of Wisconsin Madison and he went back and earned his degree and he went back and got it in person and walk the stage and I love that for him cuz that that’s a that’s an important moment I think if you go to college and you put the work in you know it it’s exciting to get to do that and he did it with his you know his wife and his kids were there with him and uh his parents were there too so it was it was really cool like really good for him that’s a great accomplishment you know especially this many years later uh for for him to go back and finish that I know I loved that and I’m with you loved that his whole family was there I love that he walked it um and it is not look college is not easy and I love that he finished this up while you know working a let’s just admit a crazy job crazy schedule with young kids um so shout out to Ryan MCD I don’t I don’t know what he got his degree in do you know what he got his degree in I don’t I don’t either what is your degree in Emma let’s just throw this out this is just gonna be a fun little what is your degree in my degree well I have two degrees I have a bachelor’s and a master’s but uh your girl got her Bachelor of Arts from Wake Forest University God Deeks uh in politics and international Affairs and Spanish was a double major and I had a minor minor in linguistics and then uh four years later I got my master’s degree from New York University in in Spanish translation and interpreting which made a lot more sense when I tell you that I started my career working in baseball and now that I work in hockey it is pretty useless but finish yeah I know trust me I’m like I would I would love I even as a senior in college you know when everyone’s taking their dumb classes like underwater basket weaving or whatever to like get their credits I did take one fun class I took African drumming uh which basically you show up for an hour a week and hit a drum and get an A um so that was the only like fun class I took but for me for fun I started taking French my senior year of college because like I’ve already taken all the Spanish classes it’s my freaking major so like of course I you know had already done that and I wanted to learn another language and it made me sat like I only got obviously it was my senior year so I only got one year of French in but now doing what I do and working around the people that I do I’m like man I could have so many fun conversations with Jeremy loon and say if I had just you know started earlier but here we are yeah well I think it’s clear now to anybody joining us that you are 100% the brains of this operation because if it will make you feel better my degree uh was earned back back when there was a computer lab you had to go to a building to get a computer I went there like one time in four years because my degree was in Christian education with a minor in theater ladies and gentlemen wow see that’s so look at Emma anything is possible Ryan mcdna I like to say it’s you know we are living proof that it doesn’t like your major does not define you for the rest of your life unless you want to go into like medicine that probably is important but if you want to you know be a journalist or be whatever it really it doesn’t matter well Ryan mcdna I mean he could have been a Spanish major he could have been a theater major we don’t know but congratulations for whatever he did the other congratulations of course and we’re a couple days late on this don’t judge us it’s Friday is philli forsberg’s a dad you all I can’t stand it Phillip and Aaron had a little baby boy named him Felix which I am so in love with that name like congratulations to them yes I’m so glad they they kept with the the double F too I think that’s great um and yeah I’m I’m so happy for them they’re just the the best people Phil and Aaron just like the nicest human beings and I know that they were so excited for this and how fitting too that he came Felix arrived early and he arrived on Mother’s Day howf already so thoughtful right I have I have to tell you I have the best gift in my mind that I so want to give them and this sounds crazy but and I and a don’t want to be the weird person that gives a baby gift but when I was growing up I grew up I’m very Swedish I grew up in a very Swedish community and the king of Sweden literally came to my little church in 1976 like King Carl came to the church and we sang the hym children of the heavenly father for him in Swedish so I’ve grown up knowing that hymn and I thought what I wouldn’t give to find an old Swedish Himel in my church that had that in Swedish and get it framed for them because it’s just the sweetest little hymn about children of the heavenly father but that is so thoughtful so I will I am the weirdo who got them a gift but it’s because I I mean I have a I’ve know know them well I pretty close with Aaron too and you know I used to travel with the team so I I go way back with them so yes I am the weirdo who got them a gift but I got my my gift is way less meaningful and thoughtful um I like to give books as as baby gifts like gift yeah and so um I got it was the actually the same gift that I got my nephew when he was born last year and it was big crowd-pleaser so I decided it was appropriate um it’s an alphabet book like learning the alphabet uh and it’s called Z is for Zamboni so it’s all hockey words it’s learning the alphabet with hockey and so I’m like hey start them young there you go so that’s amazing that’s way better than Swedish way better that’s amazing not bad Emma that was good thank you anti aunti M can come through with the baby gifts she’s so good she’s so good and want to give one more shout out and this is on ice but off Bridgestone ice so work with us Roman Yosi have loved seeing him he’s playing in the men’s worlds for team Switzerland Roman Yosi tearing it up two goals six assists eight points and four games Switzerland is doing really well here’s the stat that I love the most Switzerland right now in the tournament is second on the power play your welcome his name is ran y y well and you know what I love too and this is maybe more of an off I component to this is that um since obviously when the Predators were still in the playoffs and weren’t sure whether Roman would be able to to join the team right for uh Team Switzerland and niiko heser from the Devils was the captain of Team Switzerland and then once you know the Predators were out of the playoffs and Roman was able to join them they uh it was actually Nico said he’s like don’t want to be captain or I don’t want to like I can’t do that like Roman Yosi was my idol which I think he would be for any young Swiss hockey player like he would have to be and so you know Nico is like I he’s my idol I can’t wear the sea while he’s on the ice with me and I just think that was such a classy move and just really nice and really speaks to the the influence and the impact that Roman Yosi has had on on hockey in in Switzerland I mean I got to see it firsthand at the global series challenge last year in his hometown of burn oh my gosh I will never forget that that was so I mean the the global Series games in Prague those were very cool too but before when we went to burn and it was the the rank that he learned to play hockey in and just the the amount of you know love that that town has for him and and you know that the whole country has for him really I mean it was really like I get chills thinking about it so it’s just very cool to see nice classy move by niik heer uh letting Roman have the sea um although Roman is for sure the kind of guy who would not demand it or ask for it no no it is weird though he’s not wearing number 59 though 100% so I’m watching this and I’m like I’m sorry number 59 you are not at all who you say you should be number 90 so Yosi is number 90 and I’m like is it because he loves borro because we all love borro or you know yeah or Ryan O’Reilly like I don’t know like is it maybe it’s just not I don’t know it doesn’t feel right no it doesn’t but he is the captain so that at least they got that right Captain darn right well coming up we’re gonna talk about some on it is very simple literally have some different and see I can never get in frame different topics in my hat I’m GNA pull them out and we’re just going to discuss them and and see where we go so let’s just also can I just say I love the nod to Whose Line Is It Anyway it’s one of my favorite shows of all time so is best so funny so many hours my husband and I spent laughing hysterically and at times perhaps inappropriately but that show is funny it’s great it’s great it’s great all right so here’s our first one Emma this one okay so Utah formerly the Arizona Coyotes they are now the Utah something or other others so what name suggestion do you like and I’ll read off some of the Utah name suggestions uh the frost ice powder Mountaineers freeze Mammoth black diamonds blast Caribou blizzard swarm Hive Outlaws Yeti Squall Fury glaciers Canyons Venom and HC which stands for Hockey Club do you have one that jumps out at you that you love Emma and do you have one that jumps out at you and you’re like not even if the Jersey looks cool uh I have a few also I would just like to say somewhat tangentially related since we were talking about offi stuff uh this just in actually former predator and current Utah something or other Connor Ingram has just been awarded the bill masterton Memorial trophy uh for his perseverance yeah so we love that ing’s a great guy um super happy for him um and excited to see what he does in Utah we love him here the Utah who who should he be with the Utah wh okay so this I feel like is maybe a it’s a controversial one Sumi I like Hockey Club I think it sounds classy I think it’s cool it’s a little European um I I don’t know I like it I like the HC I think that’s cool um but knowing that that is realistically not going to be the long-term name uh I don’t mind the blizzard because I think the the double z goes with the Jazz the Utah Jazz and there it’s the same owner same building and everything so that could work it’s kind of cool a lot of people like Yeti um I I I don’t know I think the ma I would love to see what the mascot would be for the yeti like that would be that would be my biggest Pro for going with Yeti um I so I’m a big fan of when team names are related to like it it’s meaningful to wherever like the state or the city that they’re in like with the Predators you know they found the saber-tooth tiger skull underground and and that’s how they became the Predators and that you know it all makes sense it’s all connected it’s related um Utah is the be Hive state in case anyone did not know uh so I really like you know a name like the Swarm or the you know I don’t know I think sting did they have the sting on there no or the hive was a was one um I don’t know I like swarm personally I think that that’s a cooler name uh another one that I’ve seen floated out there as one of the the options is the black diamonds which I think it sounds sick as hell I think it’s you know it makes sense because you know skiing and and the Black Diamond like I that again it it’s connected local connections whatever I think that sounds really cool um plus then the Vegas golden knights would no longer be the only team that is like a two two word name so interesting those are good thought I will say I do disagree with you on the HC thing because it makes me automatically think soccer SL football if you’re European the one I love and and this is for a ridiculously dumb reason I love the Caribou because I’m like don’t you want to be like hey boo like I feel like there’s so many great cheers and you could have a really cool mascot with a caribou you could have you ever seen the Polar Express the movie oh where okay so the scene where where the train driver is talking to the caribou and he’s like they’re pulling on his beard and he’s screaming but the car can understand him and whenever I hear the word Caribou I think of that guy in that movie saying like caribou and so that’s the only thing that I can think of but it’s a good name I like it yeah I’m like I just I feel like hey boo like I just feel like there’s a lot of fun things you could do with that so I don’t know why we are in charge of more things Emma but here we are true every every every episode I’m like man we should be in charge of that too like I know I know all right here is here’s a more serious one not that we didn’t seriously solve that but does the Vancouver Edmonton series change anything about the way you think about the predators in their Series against Vancouver um I don’t know that it necessarily changes anything but I think that it does maybe solidify some things for me or some things that it it maybe answers some question questions maybe I think you know if you’re looking at at Vancouver and the way that you know obviously the the whole narrative was oh they’re down to their third string golender and Nashville still can’t beat him and you know and then they’re gonna go to Edmonton and just get destroyed by Conor McDavid and Leon dry cdle and that’s not what’s happening and so they I think every game in that Series has been decided by one goal um they had Vancouver had another three goal comeback just like they did against Nashville in the first round and so I think for me it says more about Vancouver than it did about Nashville you know I think it maybe Nashville fans can rest a little easier and be like okay this Vancouver team is is pretty legit and you know if if there’s any regrets about leaving it all you know not not you know fulfilling their potential in the first round or that they could have beaten Vancouver that’s neither here nor there I just think that Vancouver is a much more challenging opponent maybe than a and so I think in terms of the Predators that should speak volumes of them because they hung with Vancouver for that series they made it go to six games and they you know they didn’t go quietly and so I think that yeah I I would say if anything it shows that Vancouver is the better team they have a little bit more of that That Never Say Die attitude I mean with all the like I said the comeback wins and everything like that and I think that Nashville it shows that Nashville is close because they were able to hang with Vancouver the way they did but they’re just not quite there yet yeah I feel better about some of the players on Nashville like you know I I know there were we were like well we didn’t see enough of Ryan O’Reilly and we didn’t you know maybe see enough of this player or we needed more from that player but as you watch watch them with Conor McDavid with Leon drol you know with the talent that they have offensively on the Edmonton team you watch and Vancouver keeps them away from a lot of those High danger chances and it makes me look at the series and say that’s exactly what they did like that’s what they did with Nashville they kept Nashville out of a lot of those High danger chance areas and they take away space like they take away space really really well you can’t get there you just can’t get there past to Vancouver and I think it also makes me feel like wow Nashville you may need to invest in some size on the blue line which I’m not a big fan of I don’t like to judge people based on their size but you know just they’re doing something right defensively in Vancouver and it’s almost a little bit reassuring to see how challenging it is for Edmonton to score on them as well so for me I’m like okay I see you I see you Vancouver I will also say I think that we need to give uh Arthur sheaves some more credit than we probably did in the first round I mean this kid’s really good really really good I mean yes he’s still I mean people were getting mad when like Vancouver fans would get mad if you try to make that well he is a Third String Goalie that you know you should be beating him easily like Vancouver fans would get mad and defensive about that and it’s like well okay he is the third string so like that’s fact I think my my thing was you know I had never heard of this kid I didn’t know who he was when he came in and I think most people could probably say the same like when he came in against Nashville in the first round and so I’m not I wasn’t trying to say like oh he sucks or he’s a bad goalie but it’s like we don’t know what he can do and he’s you know he’s unproven and so let’s test him a little more and I think I still think you know the Predators could have done a better job of testing him but I think that we should definitely give him some some serious credit because he’s he I think he’s going to be really good really good and I you know I you know he’s laan and I have a place in my heart for the laian so yes I’m here I’m here for that but yeah he’s been he’s been really great against Edmonton and that is not an easy team to be a really good goenda go all right we are going to continue we’ve got a couple more questions I’m gonna ask Emma about Mitch Marner yeah that’s right we’re gonna talk about Mitch Marner I’m just going to tell you that I’ve already pre-pulled it out of the Hat because we’ve we’ve just got to go there so we’re gonna do that around the league after another disappointing Toronto postseason what’s your interest level in getting Mitch Marner on the team in Nashville do do you have any immediate quick proon reaction to Mitch Marner in Nashville to me that uh that the whole discussion is a nonu um I I don’t like it I think that you know if you look at him yes he’s in the last year of his contract he’s making 10 million he’s going to be asking for 11 million probably at least you know the next year and he’s those are the exact kinds of contracts that Barry trotz has said that he does not want to hand out anymore um and if you got him just for one year then that doesn’t make sense either because like we just talked about you’re not trying to win the cup in 2025 so right like that if your team gets better for one year and then he moves on then that’s not helpful either so I just to me I think even even if you could make $1 million fit let for the sake of argument if you make it fit under the cap which the Predators could um that’s not even you know that’s just looking at guys who are going to be off the books after next year so if you like let’s just say if you didn’t resign anyone who is going to be off the books after next year so that would be um like Dante Fabro Cody glass um Gus Nyquist and then you the Ryan Johansson buyout rolls off after that year so you could make it work but that’s just square one you also would have to in a he’s not a free agent you would have to trade for him so you’d have to give up a lot in return and whether you know it’s prospects draft picks you know UC Soros like I think that that’s probably where this whole rumor and speculation is coming from because I’m sure the Leafs have interest in UC Soros um as well they should yes and don’t blame him but yeah to me I think the loss of Zoros uh would be much greater than the gain of Marner especially at the price tag that he is going to come with and I think you know even again you could say like Toronto would have to retain some salary but again he only has one more year on his current contract so that’s not really even doing much so right uh for me that that’s it’s to me that’s a trade you make if you are in win now mode and the Predators are not in win now mode so for me that’s that’s my two cents on that I get why people look at somebody like Mitch Marner and say hey because you know this is a really top player he’s relatively young and and I understand why that’s the type of player you want I’m with you I think you don’t spend that money right now you wait and spend that money down the road and develop what you have now and and wait till the moment is right to get somebody like that the other thing that I will say and and and this is based on just kind of conversations that Barry trotz has had conversations in the locker room I think regardless of what who the person is what team they come from how they get here I think Barry trotz is going to be so careful about who he brings into the locker room as far as character and and I am not in any way saying Mitch Marner does not have good character Nick and I got to talk to him on the red carpet at the awards he was delightful so funny like he was a joy you that was you know five minutes but I think no matter who it is that’s going to be a huge consideration as well because I think they’ve worked very hard to get a very specific vibe in the locker room and they aren’t going to bring in high-end player if they feel like that high-end player is going to change something in the locker room especially right now when they’re just kind of laying that culture so I’m kind of with you I feel like this is It’s I get why people are having the conversation Predators need the kind of scoring that he can provide like that’s not that’s not a question it’s just what it would cost or what it would potentially cost I think what you bring up about the culture is a huge really good point because is that’s something that Barry trotz and Andrew brunette have made a top priority like you said so and again we I’m not saying that Mitch Marner is a locker room cancer I mean guys guys in Toronto seem to like him but you know I think it’s just like it’s any player of that caliber um regardless of who you are like if you’re coming in and you’re making that much money and you are going to have that much attention on you that can drastically affect you know the the culture in in the locker room I think and you know that’s yeah to me that’s just not a move that I see fitting with where the Predators are now now maybe if he was like you know he’s 27 he’s not old but still with with the kind of money and the kind of term that he’s probably going to demand I could see maybe like you know if he was like 24 25 I might be more willing to have that conversation but not at 27 yeah yeah all right let’s do our last one this is a very easy one but there’s a lot riding on it I’m just saying who do you have winning the Stanley Cup O I know it’s the worst I see I did a uh like a bracket uh before the playoffs started and I haven’t checked it lately but I don’t know that I’m doing too great I will say I had Carolina and Dallas in the final um I got Carolina yes me too Carolina was my pick at the beginning of the Season go ahead this this is their year they have to do it they have so many ufas after this year and they went and finally did something at the deadline and they got Jake gensel who was great and they got Genny Kus Nets off who’s been great and so like it it’s like y’all if you if you want to do it this is the time now you’re not not going to be able to bring back all of those ufas next year you’re not going to be able to afford them so um anyway that’s a tangent I my last stop in the NHL was in Carolina I worked for the Hurricanes for Four Seasons so I I have some strong feelings about that but um I yeah I still like Dallas I I like Dallas at the begin they were my pick at the beginning of the season um they they made me a little nervous in the first round going seven games against Vegas they to me have the deepest and the most complete team top bottom I will say like what the heck is going on with the Rangers like my God they’re good for sure but I didn’t think that they were you know I didn’t think they were that good I think they were gonna go seven seven and0 to start the playoffs like what that’s I mean plus they won the President’s Trophy and isn’t that the curse if you win the president’s trophy you’re not supposed to win the Stanley Cup so that’s why I’m like that’s not going to happen but I mean they look really good too so does Florida Florida looks really good right now um the East is yeah the East is kind of Muddy for me but in the west I say Dallas um to me is like that’s the scariest team for me in the west yeah I want to finish up with one big Friday feeling and this is something that I’ve been Che on and my husband is tired of listening to me talk about it so I’m just going to unload here and it has to do with the play offs let it out want to get this off of my chest I feel like and I know feelings are like farts can’t always trust them they’re indicators of something but I’m just saying I am almost there are times where I am not enjoying the postseason because I feel like it is getting a little bit out of hand there’s so much intensity in some of these games you know the Edmonton Vancouver series and I think the Florida Boston series are two that are just very volatile right now and here’s my pet peeve Emma people who are like yeah that’s playoff hockey and I’m like look and and PK Stan says this and you know I love PK Stan he’s like one of my people I would invite to my imaginary dinner but playoff hockey I get that it’s next level but it feels like this is almost different completely than the regular season there are things happening in this playoff that seem so far removed from 82 games if you play a certain style for 82 games and you make it to the postseason keep doing what you did for 82 games and stop with the potentially dirty hits and I’m not naming names and I’m not naming teams because Lord have mercy don’t need that but I’m a little bit bothered by the quote playoff hockey excuses so for me that’s just my big feeling on this Friday I’m just not a fan it’s a valid feeling I think sometimes it is like and this is another you know I’m not touching this with a 10- foot pole either but how uh officiating tends to be different in the postseason than it is in the regular season and I I’m just I’m just saying different I’m not saying better or worse because again 10- foot pole but I I agree with with you that sometimes we can get we can get a little extreme with some things and I think that’s a valid feeling to have can we have 82 games of hockey and then a postseason of I don’t know hockey just throw there this Friday yeah that is actually gonna do it for our first full week together Emma it has been a joy and a delight and of course we’ll be back on Monday to do it all over again we’re going to start looking back at the season giving out some player report cards before we do that though Emma
