lockon a there we go lock down a so we got five episodes of lockdown MLB five episodes of lockdown A’s all in the can for this week and we’re wrapping up what has been a pretty fun week hey we’re doing a crossover today with lock on tigers Scott Bentley the host of lockdown Tigers is going to join us in segments two and three we’re going to talk about the absolutely punchless American League Central I don’t think you notice how terrific the pitching has been in Detroit uh you wouldn’t notice because they’re not winning any games because they can’t hit they can’t hit worth a lick the twins aren’t much better they scored one run in the entire series against the Yankees it’s a strange part of the year but we’re gonna talk we’ll do a little bit of round the horn before we get to Scott a mistake on the last trivia question where I said what was the lone National League team that Billy Martin either played or managed for he only played for them for six games in his playing career now uh John Murphy Jr Scott horem uh Jonathan Karan all pointed out the fact that he did indeed Billy Martin did indeed play uh six games with the Milwaukee Braves before being shipped off to Minnesota and then off he went and then he finished his career um but I made a mistake and my good friend uh over at rip baseball Sam at RP baseball pointed that out to me that he actually played a season with the Cincinnati Reds and i’ had forgotten that I remember he played for Cleveland and Detroit and Kansas City I forgot he was with the Reds so he did indeed only play six games with the Milwaukee Braves but he also played a full season with the Reds so I got that wrong but I I have a trivia question for later on today and I know I got that right uh let’s go around the horn a little bit the Yankees have swept the Minnesota Twins Schmidt pitched a wonderful game and the twins just can’t hit at least they can’t hit the Yankee pitching and the twins you know they could win the central again but nobody in that division can hit and I talk about how it might be time for a team to make a move earlier rather than later because you know yikes um the Mets got a much needed win against the Philadelphia Phillies it was a 11 inning come from behind win and uh just what the doctor ordered Alonzo got a home run and the the big plays they went into Extra Innings with uh you know with this game uh tonight um the the Phillies tied it in the ninth inning Bryson stot got a game uh tying single but JD Martinez uh got the put the Mets head for good then a wild pitch gave him a much needed Insurance run that was a six to five Mets win you know right now a 500 record would give you a wild card spot in the National League that’s why it’s important to stay at least mediocre hey Raphael Des got a home run but Kenley Jansen took the loss and the Rays beat the Red Sox the Red Sox fell back to 500 the rays are now one game above 500 I think the rays are starting to get a little healthy you’re going to see their pitching get a little bit better I think they’re going to be just fine uh the Pirates are playing in the enigmatic National League central they W up beating the Braves 54 and the Reds you know the reds are not off to a great start but the national league wild card is g to the third spot in that is going to recognize mediocrity and De La Cruz four for four four for four with four stolen bases an unbelievable night for De La Cruz and it was basically a you know a bullpen game going on for the Reds but it a final score there s-2 and the reds are trying to get back into that NL Central race and uh the A’s just got absolutely Gob smacked by the Astros four game sweep by Houston who well at least today look like they’re back in it they looks like they’re they’re dusting themselves off uh the A’s pitching can’t stop anybody right now and the Astros have now leapfrogged the A’s into third place only the angels are keeping the A’s out of last the Astros are on a five game winning streak and the A’s are in a five game losing streak and as we record this uh we’re about to go into a fun weekend of games where the Dodgers and the reds are going to continue their matchup uh as will be the Pirates and the Cubs the Nationals are going to be playing the Phillies the Mariners are playing the orol which could be a playoff preview the Yankees are going to be playing the white socks and and the white socks have won some series recently so hold maybe they’re getting a little bit better uh Waldren is going to take his knuckle ball to the Braves and uh in and the Padres and the Braves are going on Mets Marlins who knows what’s happening there twins Guardians that’s going to be a big series for the AL Central and the Rays and the Blue Jays two AL east teams they’re trying to get their act together the A’s are taking their losing Road Show to the Royals they used to play in Kansas City who knows where they’re going to play soon the angels and the Rangers the best thing for the Rangers to get themselves back on track play the Angels Asos are going to be playing the Brewers in the rematch of several World Series you going have Red Sox Cardinals the Giants and the Rockies are taking on the Giants need to start winning again the Reds and the Dodgers are continuing their their matchup and then the Tigers in scub ball who’s pitching an unbelievable start and they’ll be playing the diamond back so that’s a little look at who won and a preview for this weekend and and in we we come back from the break we’re going to be talking with Scott Bentley Bentley from locked on Tigers how are you doing man I’m doing well man it’s uh yeah we I’m trying to think I think the last time we crossed over would have been like December maybe like we once this off season but we haven’t checked in at this year so good to be here good to be back yeah now this is uh it’s interesting I kind of alluded this in segment one that going into this year it was It was kind of strange to want to pick a a AL Central team because it didn’t seem like there was an obvious front runner now I don’t know if you remember before the season began which team I picked to win the AL Central do you remember who it was I don’t think I do it was the Detroit Tigers that’s who I picked to win the AL Central and it was borderline product of process of elimination I thought well Cleveland just lost Bieber and not sure about them uh I don’t think the twins I think they’re going to regress a little bit the Royals I think are going to improve but not from a a 100 losses to a playoff team and the White Soxs are the Midwest A’s so I said well that leaves us the tigers and I said they’re going to win the division with 84 wins they may get 84 wins but I don’t know if that’s going to win the division right now um it’s a it’s a strange start for the Tigers uh tell me your thoughts on the team like let’s be positive first what has been the the you know you got scoo ball and I mean what’s been the positive things for the team so far yeah you know I it’s funny I when I do game recaps I break down my show in what went right and what went wrong in every game right that’s how we kind of draw the line in the sand we can kind of cover all of our bases no pun intended while uh you know still talking about kind of every angle of a game and I’ve joked on the show and it’s become an ongoing joke with the listeners there that you could just call those two segments pitching and hitting and it would accomplish the same thing uh because pretty much every single game the pitching has been phenomenal and this has very quiet turned into legitimately one of the best pitching staffs Bullpen rotation and both combined uh in the American League and and honestly a top 10 unit in baseball as it stands right now and the offense is absolutely Dreadful so if we’re talking positive it it’s all pitching man like the Terk scoble as you mentioned uh is is somebody who is a really really hot pick to win sa young right now he’s been phenomenal but Rees Olen is top 10 in erra he does doesn’t have a win yet this year because our offense is Dreadful um but he has like a 22 erra and he’s winless on the season so that’s again kind of a testament to to what I’m trying to portray here uh Casey M has a sub4 ER Jack flarity looks completely reinvented he has a sub4 ER and a lot of strikeouts and his fast ball looks kind of more similar to what it was in that 2019 season where he was getting Sai Young votes really and then the bullpen for the first month of the season was a sub ER Bullpen it’s you know regressed a little bit it was never going to stand that well um but I mean Jason Foley’s been phenomenal Alex Lang looks like he’s improved his command from last year uh Tyler Holton has looked pretty solid again Andrew Chaffin a couple of bumps lately but has looks pretty solid like right is all around like this has been an absolutely phenomenal pitching unit um and they just consistently get no run support and that’s why the Tigers have lost seven of their last nine they’ve lost almost all of these games two to one one to nothing we’re on Pace to our broadcast talks about it all the time we’re on Pace to have uh I think it’s like the third or fourth most one-run games in the history of baseball like every game is just you know two to one final and uh that’s why they find themselves a game under 500 right now they just dipped below 500 for the first time this season but we’re talking positives it’s all pitching this is Chris feder the pitching coach and Robin lond jueves a lot of the the pitching coaches on staff have completely turned Detroit into a legitimate uh pitching destination for pitchers Michael Lorenzen last year was a starter and was an Allstar right like they they are building a resume as being a legitimate kind of you know people throw around the term pitching lab that that’s kind of what I’m starting to view Detroit as it’s just unfortunately there’s no offense to supply it well you brought up uh uh res ra is actually lower than you said it’s 2.09 here’s one of the reasons why I am and I those of you who who follow me and I know I do know that I’m not someone who is obsessing over like uh modern stats or the advanced stats not that I’d poooo them but I I just a lot of times I don’t understand them and I and I just enjoy I do enjoy The Narrative of the game um I do think the win loss record uh is something we almost have to take everyone’s win- loss record and throw them into the garbage because it doesn’t mean anything anymore and I actually think when they list the upcoming starters they should list their average start not their record because their record tells you something you just rattled off Jack flare who’s had a very who has you know been solid ree Olen who has uh you know his erra is 2.09 in his eight starts and he’s thrown 47 Innings so it’s not like he’s an opener uh Casey M ra at 3.50 okay of those three starters if we combine their win total I’ve almost tied them I’m tied with flarity for wins I’m tied with Olsson for wins and M has one more win than me okay now they’re better pitchers Than Me by all metrics by all metrics but it just shows that like you can’t ask for better pitching than those three right now especially at this point where three people you don’t think of as potential sa Young Award winners and they can’t buy him a win yeah it’s been absolutely I think frustrating is putting it lightly like I said I mean we we joke all the time like you literally could just rename like the good and the bad of every game to just talk about the pitching talk about the hitting because that’s pretty much what it’s come down to the offense has been absolutely Dreadful especially in the month of May but really all season in the pitching has been unbelievable uh so it’s it’s been a it’s been a frustrating year for that reason for sure I mean at this point I I mean we’re gonna we’re approaching what I call the first checkpoint of the Season which is Memorial Day and that’s I think really the first time you can stop and say okay we’ve played about a third of the Season who are we and I think I mean unless something drastically happens differently in the next couple weeks I think it’s clear that the tigers are a team that can pitch with anybody in baseball they they I would bat seventh on this team I would bat seventh all right and you gota I mean you have cier bayz bats eight so you would probably bat seven yeah probably yeah uh I I would I would really if I were the tiger since we’ve identified the problem so quickly you would want to try to do something about the about what the symptoms are and I would be calling there’s some teams that are already done the white sock are done the Rockies are done sadly Miami is done um I host locked on A’s um if they keep losing the way they’ve been doing they they’re approaching dun territory uh and the agels are pretty much done um I would at this point I would try to pull I mean you’re not going to trade for the equivalent of a sto but if there is a if there’s a legitimate Major League hitter that you could pry loose from one of those teams you know are you know you know a you know the angels have a bunch of players who are you know with expiring contracts you know Joe Adell is a what I mean there’s an article by Mark finson on mlb.com where he describes them as the classic uh change of scenery candidate um I would I would just say get a new hitter in here to sort of maybe put a new hitter in the middle of this lineup if for no other reason than to spark it and is there anyone in the farm who could come up at this point I mean this is like it’s ridiculous it is ridiculous and that’s kind of the million-dollar question there and that’s been a a topic of conversation a lot in Detroit for the last couple of weeks now because it is so absurd they haven’t scored in 19 Innings right now at the time of this recording we have gone 19 consecutive Innings we just got shut out in back-to-back games against the Miami Marlins who have the worst pitching staff in baseball that’s this isn’t like oh like you’re being dramatic like that that is the current state of the offense so I I think in terms of who to call up uh Justin Henry Malloy is a big candidate uh guy walks a an absolute boatload down in Toledo um the the issue that the Tigers current find themselves in is they are a lot of the promotion candidates are Corner outfielders and like the only three guys on the team that are hitting right now are all Corner outfielders so it’s it’s there’s a log Jam at the only position there can’t be a log Jam to call somebody up I think if if Malloy played you know he came up as a third baseman if he still played third I think he’d already be here or if you know he he played pretty much anywhere else besides Corner Outfield he’d probably already be here uh Jace Young obviously Josh Young’s younger brother uh he’s a a candidate at some point this season he’s been pretty darn solid this year in the miners but the one thing that this front office has made abundantly clear and it’s to the frustration of many but uh you know you you can kind of understand the logic I guess as well is that they are not going to rush a prospect in order to bail out the major league product they are not going to rush young if they don’t think he’s truly 100% ready just because the major league offense is struggling they that is a separate entity in the front office’s brain and that that that notion is really frustrating A lot of people because we we currently have between Colt Keith and and jav B is the worst hitter in baseball by pretty much every stat and and he’s taking up everyday lineup spots I mean the bottom half of our lineup is all ops’s the four and 500s not like oh like 670 like no like the our our entire bottom half of our lineup is ops’s that start with the number four and five that’s that’s that is absolutely maddening and we get back we’re going to talk a little bit about the fact that why I think they need that sense of urgency is because well they got the twins got a leadoff home run in the first game in the series and that was it wow there’s your scoring for the rest of the series I mean we’re happy about that I mean there you go wait we scored you a run what else do you want um um yeah that’s uh uh that’s pretty horrific and one of the reasons why I believe that the Tigers should just even if it’s a nominal thing even if it’s you know bringing a Tommy fam you know to put in that to put in that Outfield um just maybe it’s a will spark a sense of confidence in the team that okay the the Management’s behind us the management believes in US this is a winnable Division and while right now uh as of this recording Cleveland is still in first um Cleveland’s a flawed team Kansas City is right behind them uh Kansas city is Kansas City lost 100 some odd games last year and as great as Bobby wit Jr is I mean this is still it’s still a uh it’s not a perfect team and the twins who are up and down and up and down they started horribly they went on the big winning streak now I think their bats are kind of cooling down um what are your thoughts on this division and why why I think the Tigers should absolutely go for it because it’s sitting there I think there it’s it they’re ready for the taking yeah no I I completely agree and I think that that uh kind of honestly adds to the frustration of uh why the offense was put in the position it was going into the year uh not that anybody you know I certainly didn’t think it was going to be as poor as it has been um but the Tigers did not the only person they added to the offense all off season was Mark Cana and like no disrespect to markana but that shouldn’t be your golden ticket you know like middle of the lineup bat he’s been hitting three for this team because no one else can right so like that is you know when you look back at the off season now you know like you said we’re almost at Memorial Day like you’re kind of close to that first checkpoint of the year um it’s well over here 40 games is a checkpoint too because that’s what Sparky always used to say but you know it’s it’s one of those things where uh you look back and you go man like there there was no room to add anybody else this this winter right like there was no urgency to to add and this wasn’t an awesome free agent class you know whatsoever right there there there’s plenty of of flaws in uh that but you know trade opportunities etc etc going out it and going looking at what this offense has been the last two years which is not good and to just not add to the offense whatsoever because the division is on the table and it was going into the year and I I absolutely believe that it still is and and for as much Doom and Gloom as there is in in Tigers Ville right now because they’ve lost seven of nine and they haven’t scored in almost 20 Innings um that they’re still a game under 500 and and kind of right in the in the thick of it and and uh I expect Cleveland to come down to earth a little bit I still really like Cleveland this year I certainly expect the Royals to come down to earth a lot um for we play them actually uh I think next week so that’ll be a pretty big series um and then yeah the twins are unbelievably flawed and and have injury problems every single day of the week right they can’t escape that so like this is absolutely something that’s on the table and I think that that has I I was right in line with you actually my prediction preseason was 84 wins I I think uh it’s it’s one of those things where you you H doing nothing would be a disservice and and a actually in my episode literally two days ago described it as a waste of great pitching you cannot look at what the pitching has done this year and just be like well you know we build for next year you would be absolutely doing a massive disservice and wasting legitimately one of the better pitching units in the sport and I think that that would just be especially with how many injuries there are on the pitching side of thing now that that would be really really foolish and it’s funny like the Tigers in a way are being the reverse Baltimore Orioles last year because last year I felt that Baltimore had the lineup they obviously they want 100 games but I remember screaming at them trade for a starter trade for a you they they so obviously needed a starting pitcher also because they knew they’re going to the playoffs they didn’t have to worry about Boston they didn’t have to worry about the Yankees it was kind of a wideopen shot to win a pennant which they haven’t done since 83 and tiger fans could left hell we’ve had one more recently than that and um and you know a world series title more recently than that but the uh the fact that they didn’t I said you’re wasting this opportunity and lo and behold what sunk them in the postseason their starting rotation imploded and that the Rangers swept them and the Rangers went on to win the World Series G whiz um I think if you see the that this problem you could if you see your your gushing blood you know grab it at least a Band-Aid I mean if not a full tour at least slap a Band-Aid on there I’m going to throw out a a weird Modest Proposal okay sure um and and bear with me on this the Cardinals there’s a technical term for the Cardinals and that is they stink yeah um and they’re a mess and they’re and they’re they’re a wreck and then and they may have to blow the team up Paul Goldman’s having a terrible year he’s also going to be a free agent he’s a he is a legitimate MVP player when all as well and he’s about to have his contract run out and he’s playing on a team that’s basically swamp water right now and you have seen many instances of a veteran player who this guy was the MVP you have to go all the way back to 2022 to see when he was at MVP to say hey look we’re not asking you to give us 154 or games like he did when he won the MVP and hit 35 and do da dot d dot but can you give us two-thirds of a good season and show the world as you go to free agency you may have one more payday I guarantee you it’s not going to cost you top prospects I guarantee you the Cardinals would be willing to dump that for very little and if you could get 70% of Paul goldshmid for uh was it 23 of the Season as opposed to now where it’s the 14th caller or whoever else is going to be you know in the middle of the lineup I mean wouldn’t having that just be at least a tiny spark that may you know at least you know it put a little bit of excitement a little fire in her gmi’s belly too yeah you know it’s there are so many uh ideas that have been thrown out there in in this fan base over the last week or so I the the the difficult part of first base specifically and like you have a DH spot if you really want it but the difficult part about first base is we have a number one overall pick playing first base that has been Dreadful so far this season right Spencer Tolson was a one-1 and he has just been struggling mightily they’re not going to send him down because they he’s gota he’s got to adjust to Major League hitting so yeah I I it’s I I have I have something for you here sure I’m gonna cut you off everyone acknowledges that the Albert phol contract by the Angels was a terrible contract right yeah however he took Mike Trout under his wing when he came under there Mike Trout talked about how amazing it was to have this Hall of Famer that he could that could that was there that he could learn from and all this other stuff so if his presence on the team helped Mike trout become Mike Trout maybe you’re not asking TL said we were not saying we don’t believe in you in the future but why don’t we have Paul Goldman take you under his wing and if torlon just for the rest of the year and if torlon can feed off of gmid and maybe one could be for space one DH and he and he learns off of that and then goldmit leaves where you know the Mets will sign him to a 14-year deal and he’ll be broken down instantly huh there is no chance this happens but I am look I I would I mean I’m right you know I’m right you can pick anybody you can pick Joe Schmo on the street if you can convince me that he’s gonna help Tolson a little bit I’m down so that show for the street this is the 2022 National League MVP no that’s my point I I I’m willing to take on anybody I don’t care if he’s got a 580 Ops like or whatever he’s hitting right now or not if you you got somebody that uh that you can convince me is going to help Tolson I I would I would gladly do it this team just AJ and AJ hinch and and Scott Harris the president of baseball Ops are just absolutely obsessed with lineup flexibility and the reason that they didn’t bring in anyone to be the DH was because Miguel Cabrera has been the DH single-handedly for 10 years and he you know he was on the roster with Tolen it hasn’t helped too much so I I think it’s it’s one of those things where uh keep bringing another Hall of Famer keep bringing Hall of Famer to hit right next but I I think it’s honestly it’s they they love positional versatility and they’re not going to bring somebody into only be DH which like well it’s it’s clearly working right exactly which like clearly is has done them no good that was like the reason why they didn’t sign JD Martinez this year this winter was because he he would be the only the DH and he wouldn’t give your lineup any flexibility well he would be the best hitter on your team pretty by far all right well look at Scott Bentley um tell people they could listen to your wonderful
