[Music] all right welcome into another edition of the San Francisco 49ers report by chat sports I’m Chase senior and coming your way here on the rundown some more 49er schedule analysis and some really fascinating data from Warren sharp of sharp football analysis another look into this historic rest disadvantage for the Niners here on their 2024 schedule and speaking of that schedule we’ll run through it once again as a little bit of a refresher and a little bit of a reminder as to what’s to come up for the ners here this upcoming season week one against the Jets on Monday Night Football week two on the road against the Minnesota Vikings week three on the road against the Los Angeles Rams week four Niners come back to Levi Stadium for the first time since week one they host the New England Patriots week five another home game against the Arizona Cardinals week six short week against the Seattle Seahawks on the road Thursday Night Football week seven Super Bowl 58 rematch at home against the Kansas City Chiefs week eight Dallas Cowboys Levi Stadium Sunday Night Football week nine by perfectly situated for the ners there that’s how the schedu makers did San Francisco a favor week 10 cross country travel against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Tampa week 11 Seattle Seahawks in nor cow week 12 on the road against the Green Bay Packers and then the Niners stay on the road in that region very cold weather Buffalo Bills on Sunday Night Football week 14 Chicago Bears back at home week 15 Rams at home on Thursday Night Football week 16 on the road against Mike McDaniel and the Miami Dolphins week 17 Detroit Lions Monday Night Football and then the finale or finale I should say week 18 Arizona Cardinals on on the road in Glendale Arizona now again we’re going to be talking about this ners rest disadvantage with some really interesting data from the aforementioned Warren sharp and we talked about that rest disadvantage being even greater than it was last year when San Francisco had to play a lot of teams coming off of their respective Buys so with that this is today’s poll question is this rest disadvantage for the ners a big deal I want you to type B for yeah it’s a big deal oh for no it’s an overreaction let me know right now down in the comment section I next want to pop up this photo of the 2024 NFL rest edges this is both net and weekly and a theme of this show you see the Baltimore Ravens up top because they have the best rest advantage in the NFL a lot of green at the top of your screen as we kind of nerd out on today’s show we want to inform the audience as much as possible and then all the way at the bottom 32nd among 32 teams it’s the San Francisco 49ers with a lot of red with the largest rest disadvantage in the NFL and again this data coming from sharp football analysis so let’s run through it here and it doesn’t just have to do with the ners this is something that has to do with the entire NFL after not scheduling three games in 10 days for any team Over The Last 5 Years okay the NFL scheduled this scenario for nine teams this year for context in all of the games of the last decade combined there were only two such sequences like this with none occurring in The Last 5 Years it occurs nine times this year alone and after not scheduling four games and 17 days for any team the last two years the NFL scheduled this scenario seven times for 2024 for context in the previous five years the sequence occurred just five total times it occurs seven times in 2024 alone the big question here that we can all pose to ourselves on today’s 49ers for why is the NFL doing this given how physically demanding and taxing football is little bit of greed opting for TV ratings great matchups and money over player safety and health there’s really no other reason no NFL teams should be playing three games in 10 days I know I’m getting a little bit older I run every single day got my running streak closing in on 400 Days I’m in pretty good shape if I go out and play some pickup basketball because I’m operating and act activating some fast twitch muscles that I haven’t activated in a little while I’m like pretty sore for a couple of days of course I’m not a professional athlete but think about playing three football games in 10 days if you’re a defensive lineman offensive lineman clashing heads on every play pretty much a running back taking that beating and overall just playing football three times in 10 days in game action when bullets are flying you’re running at full speed full physicality it’s a lot here furthermore when assessing strength of schedule often times people think of just the opponents you look at the schedule like we just did okay who do the Niners play in 2024 but there’s a couple of different factors here that we should be entering into the equation strength of scheduled opponent of course but the difficulty of scheduled timing and this is where the ners kind of get screwed in but we also have to factor this in is it team team at a rest disadvantage in a game compared to their opponent for the ners often times this year how many days do they have to prepare for their game how many days does their opponent have to prepare for that matchup are they coming off a road game on a short week is their bi-week Edge negated so when we Factor those things in the NFL ladies and the Baltimore Ravens at number one the Ravens are at plus 16 days of net rest Edge that is the number one largest net rest Edge in the sharp football analysis database history which dates back 35 years to 1990 the Ravens net rest Edge the largest in modern NFL history the 49ers on the other hand are at minus 21 days of net rest Edge that is tied for the sixth largest disadvantage since 1990 with only the 99 Chargers 93 Dolphins 2012 Eagles 93 Packers and 2005 Chargers being worse so when you think about about that the Ravens are at + 16 and the Niners are at minus 21 that is a 307 day swing in rest Edge so when you boil that down and you put that into perspective the NFL season September October November December is really the regular season it bleeds into January right so four plus months from start to finish so the Ravens here have over one month of more days of rest than the San Francisco 49ers how is that fair it’s wild it seems unfair it is now is it everything no is it something yes and nowadays especially in this country multiple things can be true at one time you don’t just have to take one side of the AR as for how that ranks historically the 37-day swing in rest Edge the worst for any season in the sharp football analysis database going back to 2000 and the 2024 schedule set a record with the ners getting minus 32 days of total negative rest Edge so it’s a concerning Trend with these rest edges getting worse of late across the entire National Football League and for the ners minus 32 that’s a huge number here they have 21 fewer days of rest than their opponents so remember this when the 2024 season comes around I won’t blame the ners if at some point they kind of go the NBA route and they go load management and they sit a player for a game just to get that rest if they’re feeling a little bit banged up now the plus of of this is that the ners had the worst rest disadvantage last year in the NFL so number one the Chiefs third worst and they still appeared in the Super Bowl my concern because people have thrown that out how does this all carry over a year to year because it’s not just back-to-back years in which the Niners are on the wrong side of this they’ve also played deep into the season and more football compared to other teams because they’ve made it to four NFC Championship Game games in 5 years why can’t the NFL factor that in and understand we do crazy ratings when the Niners play they’re the biggest brand and best NFL franchise west of the Dallas Cowboys because the Broncos stink the Chargers are trash the Raiders are garbage Seattle they’ve been weakened down the last few years Arizona not a good team either and the ners are a money generating machine for the National Football League so look in a game of physicality and force you can’t act like rest is absolutely meaningless it is important furthermore when you look at how the nine Earth fared last year against teams that were coming off buys the data also very interesting and notable here there were three games that we want to get to Bengals Browns Seahawks the game against the Bengals in week eight Cincinnati plus eight days of rest as the ners played on Monday Night Football Minnesota in week seven remember how sluggish the ners looked at that point of the season so the ners were coming off a short week Road game in prime time with reduced rest as the Bengals were coming off a bu and then against the Browns in weeks six the ners were on the road and the Browns were coming off a bu I know it was rainy but remember how slow the niders looked in that game IO Samuel also got banged up the game against the Seahawks week 14 late in the year Seattle had a mini buy because they played on Thursday Night Football the week before so they had a three-day rest advantage over the ners and when you look at the results of those three games the ners went 0 and3 against the spread for the betters out there they did not cover the spread when they were favorites in all of those games they lost against the spread by 32 and A2 points combined despite being favored by 14 A2 9 and a half and four and a half points in those three games they also won just one of those three games and again the it test told you everything that you needed to know because the ners did not look like a healthy crisp fast teen that was firing on all cylinders they were struggling because they were beat up and they were tired so that’s why these things matter a little bit again is it everything now is it something yes before we hop on out here make sure you The game vs. the Bengals in Week 8 gave Cincinnati plus-eight days of rest edge as the 49ers played on Monday night in Minnesota in Week 7. Thus, the 49ers were coming off of a short-week road game with reduced rest while the Bengals were off a bye. The game vs. the Browns in Week 6 put the 49ers on the road against a Browns team off of a bye week. The game vs. the Seahawks in Week 14 was late in the season when Seattle was off a nice “mini-bye,” having played Week 13 on Thursday night and obtaining a plus-three day rest advantage over their division rival 49ers in Week 14. The results of those 3 games? The 49ers went 0-3 ATS and lost against the spread by a whopping 32.5 points combined. Despite being favored by 14.5, 9.5, and 4.5 points in those three games, they won just one of the three.
