Philadelphia Eagles OTAs: Top 10 Players To Watch Ft. Saquon Barkley, Nolan Smith, Cooper DeJean

[Music] I told you earlier today we were going to do two shows on today’s Philadelphia Eagles now I would never lie to the people I would never lie to the real ones and coming up here on the docket 10 players to watch at Eagles OTAs this week as OTAs underway for Philadelphia at the NovaCare complex in South Philadelphia you take a look at the Eagles offseason schedule OTA is getting underway on Monday yesterday as we record this on Tuesday night Philadelphia with an off day here on Tuesday May 21st back at it May 22nd May 23rd then more of a Hiatus and then the Philadelphia Eagles once again will take the practice field May 28th few days rest May 30th May 31st that rounds out the otaa session for the birds what otaa stands for organized team activities and then while these are voluntary workouts mandatory mini camp will get underway June 4th and it will run through the 6th for Philadelphia here and at this point of the calendar year no teams across the NFL all 32 of them do not know when training camp will officially begin but usually for the birds it does get underway at the end of July so without further Ado the 10 players that I am looking forward to to seeing and hearing about and monitoring during Eagles OTAs at number 10 well we’re not really sure I’m going to put a big fat question mark because it has to do with the position battle especially after Devonte Parker decided to retire on Monday night who will win the wide receiver 3 Battle is going to be a looming offseason question mark and here during OTAs who will get the first crack at wide receiver three reps will it be Paris Campbell a Speedster and a burner who could stretch the field vertically take the top off of the defense who has 4-3 speed but has been injured throughout his entire NFL career will it be a rookie in Ania Smith out of Texas A&M a late round selection who Nick serani has really liked over the last couple of years he has wiggle short area quickness and burst he can make people Miss in short areas and it’s impressive how he’s able to turn garbage into gold when it seems as though there’s nothing there he could turn that garbage into gold meaning he could turn that into a big play he also has some return experience and Ania Smith is a player who can operate out of the slot could it be a player like Johnny Wilson also a late round selection who stands at 66 but sometimes plays smaller than his size and is a little bit raw as far as catching the ball route running some of those nuances of the wide receiver receiver position for me Wilson seems like more of a long-term project and you have to throw Britain cvy into the equation Joseph Nagata player who’s tall and physical a little bit slower Point here being wide receiver three going to be a good competition the birds could also address that position in NFL free agency as we talked about during the show earlier on Monday next up at number nine the franchise quarterback the $50 million Pere man and quarterback Jaylen Herz can Jaylen Herz bounce back to his 2022 form that’s what I want to see and he has always embraced challenges he’s always never been content with being good he wants to be great and he understands that he ended last year in a poor way now when he played against the Buffalo Bills and led the Eagles to that incredible comeback he was the odds on favorite to win NFL MVP after that he sputtered and he spiral I think a lot of that was due to bad offensive play calling so I think new offensive coronator Kellen Moore should help Jaylen Herz rebound and one of the reasons that I’m excited to see Herz during OTAs the system is going to be different there are going to be changes to this game as Nick serani gives the keys to Kellen Moore and what Kell Moore has done a lot he’s had his quarterbacks operate a decent amount under Center Jaylen Herz primarily throughout his NFL career especially under Shane styken and under Brian Johnson last year he’s taking Snaps out of the shotgun so will we see a little bit of a shift in philosophy next up let’s go to the defensive side of the ball linebacker Devin white a former team captain for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers a former allp proo and Superbowl Champion a top five pick as a linebacker you don’t see that often when an ball linebackers picked that early in the NFL draft why I’m excited about white this year and I’m higher on him than a lot of other people out there who the analytical nerds think that he stinks and some of the fans think that he stinks as well because he has struggled at times over the last couple of years but I have seen Devin white play at an elite level and Vic fangio has a background in developing linebackers as a head coach and defensive coordinator also as a linebackers coach now Von Holland safety of the Miami Dolphins said that he’s really excited about the Dolphins new defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver in part because he’s a good person it’s a little bit of a shot at Vic fangio I’ve never heard that fangio is a bad guy but he’s a boomer he’s older he’s from Scranton which is a boomer City Dunmore to be specific so maybe he’s just a little bit too blunt for some of these young players but that plays in Philadelphia and it plays for trying to bring the best out of a a player with god-given ability like Devin white and white is also on a pro it deal one-year contract he has escalators in that contract if he does play well so he’s motivated as he comes to Philadelphia here the athleticism it’s there the speed it pops off your screen and the talent is there for Vic fangio it’s up to him to mold it now let’s shift gears to the trenches on the defensive side of the football and let’s talk about Jordan Davis here another player who I’m intrigued to see during OTAs it’s a big year looming for Jordan Davis former first round pick first two years he’s displayed potential but it hasn’t been consistent and the Eagles next year around this time are going to have to decide on whether or not they want to exercise his fifth year option as he goes into year four and that’s why this year is big for Jordan Davis his historically sometimes defensive tackles have taken a couple of years to develop even Fletcher Cox you saw the flashes right from the jump but it’s not like he became a great player right away he was really really good for Jordan Davis it’s taking him a little bit longer hopefully can he ever tap into him being a physical freak at 66340 will he be in better shape and can this year he be a thre down player now let’s go to one of the biggest free agent acquisition for Philadelphia and that is Ed rusher Bryce Huff under Vick fangio he’s going to ask his pass rusher sometimes to drop back in coverage that is not the strength of Bryce Huff’s game his strength pinning his ears back getting aggressive trying to eat provide pressure on the quarterback and get after the quarterback the Eagles invested heavily in huff and it’s a little bit of a risk one year of production for a former udfa who had 10 sacks last year for one of the best defenses in the NFL and and not only is he getting paid but he has big shoes to fill with thean reic being traded after the eagal signed him to his former team in the New York Jets and I want to see the early makings and the early indications of how Vic fangio plans to utilize him but also the scheme that he runs and how he uses and mixes and matches this defensive personel for Philadelphia here so we’re five players down five players to go which player are you most excited to see during OTAs let me link down below now we’re inside the top five and we’re g to wrap a little bit about Nolan Smith my fifth ranked player that I’m excited to watch during these organized team activities for the birds he underwent shoulder surgery this offseason so that he can be a more durable player and he’s going to be relied upon and asked upon to do a lot and have a big leap from year one in which he barely played to year two we have seen glimpses of him being a freak athlete last year in the preseason before he injured that shoulder and then in the Wild Card round against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when the film was certainly up and down but you at least see what the eagle saw as far as that ability goes he’s a fascinating athlete with tons of raw ability and you match him up with the good defensive coordinator can fangio also tap into his inner greatness now in the pre-draft process two years ago his testing numberers very good he is a lighter player 622 38 hopefully added some weight those were his height and weight measurables going into the NFL scouting combine but vertically 412 in excellent Broad and then the 40 yard dash a 444 at that size is incredible and the bend the twitch the fast first step very similar athlete to Assan reic who like Nolan Smith got off to a slow start but like Hassan reic and Nolan Smith really round into a star Edge rusher in this league we’ll see it could start this year in 2024 along those same lines and for many of the same reasons that I’m excited about Nolan Smith the big mystery of this draft class jayx hunt didn’t know a lot about him coming out of college and he’s a converted safety who started his college career at Cornell but NFL draft nerds love the player he’s a raw Prospect but intriguing athletic upside and the Eagles released a video of him displaying his personality having that many microphone and asking some of his teammates questions um and he looked bigger than I thought that he was going to look you put some pads on him and I’m like okay let’s see what he could bring to the football field inside the top three now and at number three is the second round pick 40th overall Koop dein and there are so many questions with kooper dein as far as his usage how will the Eagles use him outside corner inside corner or at safety how we Roseman has said we drafted him to be a corner Brian baldinger has said I don’t think he’s going to play on the inside because at College he didn’t play inside he played outside and he played really well where he had seven career interceptions three of them went back for touchdowns and he’s a physical freak will dein get opportunities ASAP will he get return reps this will be an early look and it’ll tell a story as far as the Eagles plans for him during OTAs quinan Mitchell coming in at number two I’m just excited because I love offense I love when offensive units can put up a lot of points on the scoreboard I got to tell you though I’m a defensive guy as well and last year having to be subjected to watch this eagles’s defense it was torture weeken and week out I’m ready to see Quin and Mitchell ball out and I’m excited specifically to see what a young first round Corner can do for this team last time the Eagles took a corner in the first round Leo Shepard in 2002 soon thereafter he became an all pro I believe quinan Mitchell has Pro Bowl level ability and if he earn earns the starting role and he plays well means that the Eagles hit on a critical draft pick but also if he earns the starting role and he can play right from the jump it makes your defense better and it allows this defensive unit to take a sizable leap and at number one free agent acquisition not a drafty not a man that is a big mystery it’s saquin Barkley why I’m excited to see saquin he is is an insanely gifted weapon and I’m not going to categorize him as just a running back if you’re casual you can do that he’s listed as a running back but he can be so much more and at times the New York Giants criminally underutilized him early in his career they barely gave him the pill inside the Red Zone how why doesn’t make any sense they also didn’t utilize him in a variety of ways like I think Kellen Moore can utilize him in a variety of ways obviously as a running back in between the tackles to the perimeter to the edge but as a pass cut your out of the back field wheel routes screen passes shoot bubble screens getting some blockers out in space use saquan Barkley with that footwork and Route running and pure athleticism as a slot wide receiver when you have a weapon that is this gifted find ways to utilize I him and get him the football so Kell Moore my message to you is right here get in your bag we saw the success that you had with with Ezekiel Elliot saquon Barkley is a lot more well-rounded than Zeke so use saquan Barkley as that pass Catcher And Runner and then in addition to the Giants not utilizing him well he also ran behind an offensive line that was incompetent that was a joke that was one of the worst in the NFL throughout his entire duration while playing with the Giants not the case any longer so what’s saquin going to look like behind a quality offensive line that can op open up some large holes with a good offensive play caller a good quarterback who’s better than Daniel Jones and with all of these weapons on this team with an offensive line coach and Jeff stoutland who knows how to develop offensive lineman to open up these gaping holes and then lastly after Jaylen hurt struggled to end last year bringing in a weapon like this can help out your Young quarterback Eagles had a bunch of money to spend they invested in the running back spot usually I would be against this but look at what Christian mcaffrey has been able to do for the 49ers and how he’s elevated that entire offense top five in MVP voting last year offensive player of the year 2,000 allpurpose yards he took that offense to another level sequan can do
