keep Keegan Murray’s name out your trade talks I’ve seen them I’ve heard them including on Sacramento Airwaves I’m going to explain to you why I don’t think the king should include Keegan in any realistic trade conversations plus damont sabon is named to the all NBA third team we’ll discuss right here on locked on Kings you are locked on Kings your daily Sacramento Kings podcast part of the Sacramento Kings coverage all off seon long today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time download the game time app create an account and use code lockon NBA for $20 off your first purchase terms apply my name is Matt George I have the privilege of being your host here I’m a Sacramento Sports Anchor and reporter for ABC 10 news and those of you who have listened to Lon Kings over the last couple years since of course the 2022 draft know how much I love Keegan Murray big fan of Keegan Murray big believer in Keegan Murray now I’m not blind to Keegan Murray’s faults I’m also not blind to Keegan Murray is not the best player in the NBA or the best player in NBA history so I’m certainly not going to go as far as to suggest that Keegan is in that Untouchable untradeable category as a player like Anthony Edwards for example or Nicola joic with the Denver Nuggets I’m realistic but in a lot of ways in in in a ton of ways Keegan Murray has been and is exactly what the Sacramento Kings need now and need more of period plus he’s only going going into his third year in the NBA and his growth over these first two seasons has been exponential we’re going to dive into a lot of this because I mentioned Keegan Murray is not in that Untouchable category really I don’t think there’s any Kings player in the Untouchable category it’s hard to have anybody in that Untouchable untradeable category when you’re a team that has missed the playoffs that being said Keegan dearin and domas are all untradeable in realistic conversations in my mind because there are guys absolutely there are guys that you’d be willing to trade any one of those three for there are better players in the league than those three that you would take a straightup swap if you could and if it worked but this is not NBA 2K the force trade setting is not on you can’t just swap any player for who you like or for any upgrade out there in my opinion any Kings Trade conversation that they’re realistically going to be involved in this offseason should not include Keegan Murray because whatever they’re going to be getting back will not be worth Keegan Murray that’s the whole premise of this podcast and it starts with Brandon Ingram right he is the name we’ve talked about it a lot here on lockon Kings recently he is the name the biggest name as of right now that’s reportedly available the New Orleans Pelicans making Brandon available in trade talks yes Brandon Ingram is another type of player the body type the the the the size the position the athleticism the scoring the length he is exactly what the Kings need but the Kings would be foolish listen to me clearly the Kings would be foolish to include Keegan Murray in any sort of deal to land bring Brandon Ingram short term yes you’re getting the better player but not nearly significantly better enough to punt on the bright future that Keegan Murray has short term Brandon Ingram is an upgrade for sure no if Sans or butts about it but I think there are realistic ways that the Sacramento Kings can be involved and can be serious contenders in the Brandon Ingram trade sweep Stakes without making Keegan Murray available now of course if you’re the New Orleans Pelicans you’re going absolutely we’ll do Brandon Ingram from ke for Keegan Murray I imagine they would I think the brand I think the Pelicans would love to add Keegan Murray to what they’re doing in New Orleans even with his payday coming in a handful of years right absolutely I feel like New Orleans would be interested in that deal Ingram addresses the short term but Keegan already is on a very similar level of Defender if there if if Brandon Ingram if you want to say Brandon Ingram is a slightly better Defender than Keegan Murray is I guess I’ll give you that but it’s not by much very very minor also in my opinion two seasons in two seasons Keegan Murray will be just as good of a player as Brandon Ingram is in two seasons I think with Ingram even if he stays where he’s at because I don’t know how much better Brandon Ingram is going to get it’s I think it’s more likely I’m not predicting this I think it’s more likely that Brandon slightly regresses then he slightly gets better or improves over the next two years of his career not rooting against the guy not trying to hate on the guy I think I mean his prime is now as is dearn fox’s and damont sabonis which is why some people go yes so you trade a player like Keegan Murray whose Prime is still a couple years away you go out and get Brandon Ingram you have three players in your Prime you’re trying to make a run and ultimately trying to win a championship in Sacramento that’s how you do it I understand what you’re saying but again Brandon Ingram in his prime right now in my opinion is not that much better than what Keegan Murray I believe will be next season and again two seasons from now I think Keegan Murray will be considered a better player in the league plus financially a little a little more impactful so in my so you’re probably asking Matt what are your reasons why shouldn’t the Kings consider trading Keegan Murray again for claric that does not mean that there is not a trade out there that the Kings would consider moving Keegan I’m not that’s not what I’m saying I’m saying realistically this offseason right now I don’t think any of those conversations truly exist Keegan is the exact type of player the Kings need more of a defensive athletic lengthy Wing who can space the floor knock down threes and hopefully this is kind of the if with Keegan right now develop into an offensive player that can be a little more reliable and can create their own shot that’s what Brandon Ingram has over Keegan right now for sure Brandon Ingram can go out there and straight get you a bucket when you need it Keegan is not there yet so if that’s what the Sacramento Kings are truly lacking I understand those of you who are thinking yes I would include Brandon or Keegan Murray in a Brandon Ingram trade but again I am not I don’t think that Ingram’s shot creation right now is so much better than what I believe Keegan Murray’s can and will be as early is next season so much better that you do it without hesitation or without a second thought look at kean’s development year over year over year right comes into the league as a rookie leads the NBA in three-pointers and NBA history the most three-pointers made by a rookie all time in NBA history on a good basketball team on a team that ended their playoff drought for the first time in 16 years now the Kings did not end that drought because of Keegan Murray specifically but Keegan Murray as a rookie was being asked to do what no other rookie was on a winning basketball team he brought that into the playoffs when early on in the playoffs he struggled game one game two struggled to kind of get himself going by games three four five six seven he was more involved he was more active he carved out a role for himself and the Kings leaned on him to make that game a SE or make that series a seven game series right then you go into year two in Keegan Murray’s draft profile or or the the the ations about Keegan Murray around the draft where he has this upside as an offensive player he’s he’s not a risky pick but he he doesn’t really excel at anything right he’s kind of a jack of all trades but when it came to conversation about his defense it was okay Keegan Murray has the potential to be a a a pretty good Defender at the NBA level this season he blossomed into the best defender at his position here in Sacramento to you that might not be saying much considering where the kings are as a defensive team or as a roster as a whole including uh consisting of Defenders but defensively this team made a massive jump Keegan Murray was at the center of that in one year Keegan went from a questionable Defender to a top tier Defender that the kings were using to guard not just the best wings that they were facing Keegan at times was guarding Steph Curry Keegan at times was guarding the best guards on the opposing team he made that jump and made that development in year two immediately so what can he look like in year three I know this is a one game sample size but it’s important to point out Keegan Murray in just two seasons has a higher career high scoring night than dearen Fox does same thing with Malik monk too Keegan Murray has done that so he has the potential he’s shown the potential granted I know it’s one game you would like to see more of it it’s one game but he showed you he could score 45 points granted in the California classic last year he also put up 50 it’s exactly what you want to see out of a player like Keegan Murray when he has that offensive side to him he’s also of course like we talked about a extremely highly reliable three-point shooter he has obvious areas where he can improve right obvious areas but only heading into year three how much he’s grown from where he was as a rookie to where he ended the season which by the way he was not very good he was not very good in the second playin game right he really struggled in New Orleans a handful of Kings really struggled in New Orleans but he was very good in the first playing game against the Golden State Warriors how Keegan Marie’s developed over the last couple years makes me think yes this guy is on a trajectory that is only going in the right direction he’s young but he fits he’s he’s a guy that you do not want to get rid of or do not want to move on from if you don’t have to in order to make an upgrade for this roster that they need right now make no it s or butts about it the Kings do need to upgrade this roster 100% but I believe they can do it and should do it first without including trade uh Keegan Murray in trade talks unless those trade talks are bringing you back a Bonafide established Superstar which call me crazy I don’t consider Brandon Ingram to be that you also might be asking Matt how is this situation different from the Tyrese halberton trade look what Tyrese is doing right now Tyrese was just named to the all NBA 13 right Tyrese’s Pacers are playing in the Eastern Conference Finals Tyrese is exploded you you were fine you celebrated not necessarily celebrated but you were okay with the Kings trading Tyrese Halbert in away to get to M sabonis so why is this one different just because you like Keegan Murray Murray more than you like Tyrese no the circumstances are extremely different first off at that time the kings were a bad basketball team a bad basketball team with the NBA historically long playoff drought right they also had two guards their two best players were at the same position ball dominant point guards who needed the ball in their hand to succeed Keegan Murray is one of very much one on this roster sure there’s guys like Harrison Barnes and Kessler Edwards nobody on this roster can do what Keegan Murray does and the Kings need more not less of what Keegan Murray does trading Tyrese halberton away choosing to trade one of those two guards made sense because both of them had value and both of them were very very similar who knows if Fox and and Tyrese could have worked out together long term we’ll never know but the Kings had two very similar players and moved on from one to go out and get a player a big man that they’ve desperately needed for years if the kings were to trade Keegan Murray away they have to be trading him for a player that is better at his position with his size his measurements and his ability defensively on the perimeter I don’t realistically know how you get that look I’ve shared with you before I have a very very short list very short list of names that I would include Keegan Murray in a trade for almost all of them I would say are unrealistic one of those names and again I’ve said this before on locked on Kings one of those names is a guy that I’ve loved to have in Sacramento for years Jaylen brown but I was thinking about it today and the more I was thinking about it the more it dawned on me the Sacramento Kings might feel like Keegan Murray is going to be their Jaylen brown one day and before you roll your eyes or scoff at that especially after the three-point shot that Jaylen Brown hit last night to send that game into overtime before you laugh and scoff at that the numbers of Jaylen Brown’s first two seasons in the NBA and Keegan Murray’s first two seasons in the NBA they support the Kings and they support Keegan I’ll explain in just a second tell you how long I’ve wanted Jaylen Brown here in Sacramento a very long time my OG’s listening to this podcast know I probably bring it up at least once a year especially during the offseason it’s always been a dream of mine now there’s an evil part of me that is rooting for the demise of the Boston Celtics for them to lose because where the hell do the Boston Celtics go from here if they lose right they’re the best team in the NBA in my opinion they’re absolutely built to win a championship if they don’t get it done this year I don’t know where the heck they go I don’t think they would overreact is as extremely as as blowing up the Tatum and Jaylen Brown partnership but if that is the only way to potentially have Jaylen Brown come here to Sacramento I’m all for it that’s what I’m rooting for very selfishly but again we’re trying to be realistic here I like to have my fun I like to play with my fantasy GM hat as much as possible we’re trying to be realistic realistically Jaylen Brown even if he’s one of the top Targets on my list that I would trade Keegan Murray for he’s not coming to Sacramento that’s why I say the king should not include Keegan Murray in any realistic trade packages this off season at this point in time but then the more I started thinking about Jaylen Brown because I’ve wanted him in Sacramento so bad it’s like what what is it about jayen Brown that I want he’s someone that can I mean he’s a he’s an multi-time All-Star a three-time Allstar right he’s a former all NBA player we’re talking someone if if Keegan could reach Jaylen Brown status we’re talking Keegan hitting his ultimate ceiling right I do not see a world where Keegan Murray is ever a better player than Jaylen Brown is like we’re talking if Keegan Murray can be what Jaylen Brown is for the Boston Celtics but here in Sacramento he has reached his ultimate ultimate ceiling we’re talk we’re talking about that much space in between him and the ceiling right like Gandalf walking through a hobbit hole my fellow nerds will will appreciate that one hitting his head on the top right that is what Keegan Murray that’s Keegan Murray’s ceiling at maybe even being pushed maybe being extended a little bit so I’m not predicting and I’m not here saying Keegan Murray is going to have a career on the same level as Jaylen Brown Keegan Murray is going to be a multi-time All-Star Keegan Murray is going to be an all NBA player but the Sacramento Kings might feel like he has the potential to be to Sacramento what Jaylen Brown is to Boston which is a second star for the team to lean on to take on a lot of the big defensive loads and help their team legitimately compete for a championship you think it’s unrealistic let’s talk about the numbers really quick let’s talk about how these two have started their careers the similarities and the differences between the two both players were on the all rookie team their first Seasons that’s pretty cool that’s awesome both came into the league and and were recognized for how impactful they were both were also very top picks right Keegan Murray top pick out of Iowa Jaylen Brown top pick out of Cal Keegan in his rookie season averaged 12 points a game shot 45% from the field 41% from three-point range 76% from the free throw line also averaged four rebounds once again he broke the record for most three-pointers as a rookie almost all of them catch and shoot three-pointers off of dribble handoffs so it wasn’t like he was creating them for himself and he was on a Kings team that ended their playoff drought and went 48 and 34 on the season Jaylen Brown his rookie season also on a very very talented Boston Celtics team that went 53 and 29 his rookie year Jaylen Brown averaged just six points half of what Keegan averaged shot 45% from the field 34% from three-point range 68% from the free throw line and averaged two rebounds half of the amount of rebounds that Keegan’s averaging now to be fair Keegan Murray is a little bit bigger than Jaylen Brown is Jaylen is more of a 23 Keegan Murray more of a 34 so the rebounding numbers might be skewed uh in that sense but comparing comparing rookie numbers for Keegan to rookie numbers for Jaylen both on established or or both on playoff teams in their respective conferences their rookie year Keegan had a better rookie season okay Matt that’s one year let’s look at their second SE uh or actually rather let’s let’s go to their first playoff appearances because both players as rookies made it to the postseason Keegan Murray averaged nine points shot 44% from the field 37% from three 66% from the free throw line in the playoffs but average six rebounds also had a really good defensive series against the Golden State Warriors Jaylen Brown in his first playoffs uh appearance which went further than just one series to be fair Five Points a game averaged 47% from the field 21% from three-point range 66% from the free- throw line and averaged just like his regular season just two rebounds a game during the playoffs so Keegan Murray’s first playoff averages better than jaylen’s although Jaylen played more playoff games than Keegan did his rookie year now let’s go into their second Seasons right because you’d expect a rookie after a good first season there is such a thing as a sophomore slump But ultimately you’d expect players to improve well Keegan Murray of course did that he jumped from 12 points the game to 15 points per game shooting 45% from the field 35% from three-point range that number dropped off a bit too much and 83% from the free throw line good Improvement there also averaged five rebounds per game which is an improvement on his one rebound and got up to one steel a game on a Kings team that did miss the playoffs but they finished 46 and 36 just two wins fewer than the season before James Brown his second season good jump for him from six points per game to 14 points per game so a more significant jump than Keegan had but still averaging less points per game his sophomore season than Keegan Murray did shot 46% from the field 39% from three-point range 64% from the free throw line also averaged five rebounds and one steal on a team that won 55 games Brown That season received Defensive Player of the Year votes and most improved player votes now he didn’t win either uh I should say he’s yeah he did receive Defensive Player of the Year votes and also some uh uh some nods for all defensive team as well obviously Keegan did not get those but the numbers say Keegan Murray had a better second season than Mike than Jaylen Brown did Jaylen Brown’s breakout did not come until his fourth season right he actually went down from his second season to his third season in the league he dropped from 15 or rather 14 points per game to 13 points per game and then suddenly his fourth season he exploded and was averaging 20 points per game and he has averaged 20 or more points per game the last five seasons including this season it took Jaylen Brown Four Seasons to get to the level offensively of where he’s at now and now of course like I said he’s a three-time Allstar all NBA defensive team uh member an absolute star in this league and and hoping to lead the the Boston Celtics to their Championship their first championship in in quite a while here so there are two takeaways that you can have from this takeaway number one Jaylen Brown’s developmental path to become what he is Keegan Murray as of right now is on a slightly better path statistically than Jaylen was and it’s not we’re not talking a rookie putting up good numbers on a bad team we’re talking about a rookie and a sophomore or second-year player putting up good and then better numbers on a team competing in the playoffs or for a playoff spot in the Western Conference it’s not an exact comparison it does not mean that Keegan is guaranteed to have the growth and turn into the player that Jaylen Brown is but you can see similarities the numbers show that he can be and is on a similar rise but if you don’t want to acknowledge that takeaway if you’re not if you’re not feeling that if you’re not drinking the Kool-Aid with me on that I feel you that’s fine here’s the other takeaway that really should be the most important thing you take out of everything that I just said in this Jaylen Brown Keegan Murray comparison it took Jaylen Brown for Seasons to become Jaylen Brown as we know him Keegan Murray is entering season three if you want to move on from Keegan when he has the potential to be a Jaylen brownes player for this Sacramento Kings team not predicting him to to be a three-time All-Star multi-time All-Star and and all NBA Defensive me team member Sacramento King there are multiple people within the Sacramento Kings organization that do believe that Keegan has Allstar potential but it took it took jayen years to get to that spot where will Keegan Murray be in four years where will Keegan Murray be next year and you want to risk trading that away for maybe an upgrade when you need more of that at his position I’m not doing it I feel comfortable and confident saying that I’m not doing it well finally the NBA got something right with their Awards damanda sabonis all NBA third team we’ll talk about it and plus the votes that dear and fox got in just a second today’s episode of NBA today to get 10% off your first month that’s betterhelp.com lockon NBA congratulations for the second year in a row damand sabonis Sacramento Kings Center named to the all NBA third team very well deserved I’m going be honest with you part of me was I genuinely I was not expecting it to happen after sabon is missing the All-Star team and just being disrespected Time and Time and Time and Time and Time Again over the course of this entire year I really thought the NBA and these voters are going to find a way to keep him out of it even though he led the league in rebounding again he led the league in double doubles led the league in triple doubles putting up numbers and breaking records that only like Oscar Robinson and Kevin Lovin guys like that were doing well thankfully they got this right damand sabon is named to the all NBA third team and isn’t it fitting isn’t it fitting that Tyrese halberton is on the third team with him the guy the Kings traded to get the guy they needed both on the same third team together it speaks to exactly what I talked about earlier in the week both sides love this trade clearly the Pacers love it in the Eastern Conference Finals right now the Sacramento Kings even though they have not made it to the Western Conference Finals they are very happy with the move makes a ton of sense for them both sides loved this deal needed to make this deal and now both players are getting the all NBA recognition that they deserve to get in addition to those two on the third team you also have LeBron James Steph Curry and dein Booker in the case of LeBron and Steph you’re talking two guys that were perennial First Team all NBA guys not too long ago but with where the league is Luca and Anthony Edwards and Shay gilis Alexander and those big names oh yeah it’s LeBron KD Steph guys are on your way out a little bit and I don’t mean that disrespectfully that’s just where the league is at at this point in time damont sabonis though did receive one all NBA first team vote I’m here to tell you here to clear the record on lockon King it wasn’t me okay stop accusing me of giving him my first team vote well hold on back up Matt what the hell are you talking about you don’t even have a vote I don’t I don’t vote on this I’m not an NBA voter number one so I I’d like to pretend I’m important enough to get a vote I’m not but if I had my votes no as much as I love de sabonis and would to vend him to the end of the Earth on this podcast and have done so all season long I would not have given deand sabonis an all NBA first team vote I certainly wouldn’t have given him an all defensive team vote like he got and he got some other crazy votes over the course of this year I’m crazy I’m crazy for my Kings not that crazy it’s not me okay stop blaming me stop reaching out going I know this is you Matt it’s not me and whoever it is I don’t know if they’re from Sacramento or not may they probably as much as I love don’t they probably shouldn’t have a vote sorry like he’s he’s not first team all NBA caliber this year he’s not I can say that while also loving the guy to Absolute death he did have 16 second team votes and then ultimately 51 third team votes what about dearon fox dearon fox did not make the all NBA team this year after making it last year with domas Fox received one second team vote and six third team votes so he didn’t get a lot at all and honestly I’m not surprised by that I’m okay by that the Sacramento Kings missing the playoffs and getting two all NBA players never would have made sense I was not expecting it one bit I know the Lakers did Lakers got LeBron and Anthony Davis got all NBA second team congratulations to ad for having good games whenever you didn’t play demonto sabonis good for you um the Lakers I mean having LeBron James and AD that’s why they got it they got it because of their names and their numbers not because of how their team performed which is like if that’s the like hey voters you can vote however you want although it’s crazy like to to make it clear to y’all how much power these voters have because Anthony Edwards and Tyrese halberton were named to all NBA teams that significantly affects the extensions that they’re going to be signing here with their respective teams in the near future how significantly Matt well they’re each going to sign a 5-year maximum extension without making the all-nba team their five-year maximum extension would have been to the total of $24 million that’s a boatload of money but because they have made the all NBA team now that extension can go up to a maximum of two which they’re going to get the max $245 million a $41 million total difference just from making the all-nba team that’s the power that voters have because voters have the opportunity to vote on these players it’s the difference between $24 million and $245 million speaking of which because damont sabonis made the all-nba team I think he got like a $1.3 million incentive for his contract for making it so again congrats to domas but it’s good for the Kings to get some sort of all NBA recognition all right now I want to hear from you if you think I’m a total shill for Keegan Murray let me know if you agree with what I’m saying let me know who would you trade Keegan Murray for or you like me he’s off the table for pretty much anything realistic if you think you have a realistic trade I have no problem telling you if it’s unrealistic or not if you want to submit those to me you can do so in the comment section if you’re watching on YouTube you can hit me up on Twitter at Matt George sack you can email me Matt Georg Sports gmail.com appreciate your support as always can’t wait to have you join me on the next episode of lockon Kings where I’m planning on talking about something actually I think that’s pretty intriguing how much do you believe in dearon Fox right now compared to this time last year or period in his career because I’ll be honest with you I have never believed in dear Fox more than I do right now after the Kings missing the Playoffs I’ll explain that on a coming episode of lockon Kings hope to see you then until then my name is Matt George you’ve been listening to the lockon Kings podcast part of the locked on podcast Network [Music]

Matt George explains why he feels Keegan Murray should not be included in any realistic Sacramento Kings trade talks. Plus, Domantas Sabonis is named to the All-NBA 3rd Team.

  1. If we can punt on Tyrese haliburton you can definitely punt on Keegan Murray but yea Matt only for the right player who is young & under contract but like you said not gonna happen this summer & by the way Keegan is not athletic lol he doesn't fly to the rim like monk/fox come on now slow your roll on that one

  2. I’d give them this years pick (I know we can’t give it but we can draft who they want and Trade to them) and our next available after Atlanta gets their pick. Maybe throw some fillers, but I wouldn’t trade Keegan.

  3. Kings were the favorite to win that New Orleans play in game and I knew we would lose. I was in Vegas when that play in game was going on. You don’t know how bad I wanted to go ahead and place the bet on NO. My wife told me to stay out of it- so I did. I was at the MGM sports book. I knew we were going to lose, based on the season. I listened to my wife and didn’t place the bet. I should have.

  4. Matt George…Thank You! I’ve been saying since the season ended that we don’t need to trade anyone. Sign Monk. Sign Mike Brown to an extension. This team is good enough to win next year.

  5. Murray is a keeper. However, a good coach will have him playing all-star caliber basketball from start to finish next year, or all bets are off.
