Seattle Seahawks OTAs Takeaways: Devon Witherspoon BALLS OUT + Geno Smith & Abraham Lucas Injury

[Music] the second day of OTAs are in the books for your Seattle Seahawks it was the first time the media got to see the Seahawks take the field we will go over my takeaways from the first open Tyler Jones here with you thanks for join us let’s go over our OTAs for day number two for Seattle number one the Seahawks not rushing to implement a complex defense if you will that was the theme for Mike McDonald in his post practice press conference on Wednesday when talking about the process of where things are headed towards of getting this defense installed we know that it’s going to be a bit complex with 34 and 43 three schemes involved here and McDonald said the following as far as the progress made to this point the guys were real slow to show checks today anticipating things so we’ll make some decisions so don’t doesn’t pile on and we’ll get too far behind not too worried about the pace and how fast we get everything in McDonald went on to say we want a really good foundation going into camp we have a schedule but we will adjust as we go then ran Jenkins one of the newest members of the CLC hwks coming over from the Jacksonville Jaguars he said the following about the defense I think it will be challenging for opposing offenses to figure out what we’re in you go back and watch the Baltimore film you’ll see how difficult it was for any quarterback in the league and I’ll say this with a variety of looks that we’re expecting Mike McDonald to put into this defense I’m not surprised that it’s a slow process that these guys are still learning and quite frankly that’s okay so I’m not worried that this is taking a while for these guys to catch on especially just after two practices let’s talk offense now Gino Smith finding comfort in the new offensive scheme Ryan grub coming over from the Washington Huskies running a new air raid scheme and here’s a photo of Gino looking snazzy and practice we’re in the throwback threads as well those are always good to see and here’s what Gino had to say when regards to the brand new Seahawks offensive system it’s just a matter of rep repetition because it’s all new to all of us for the most part everyone is learning a new system and we’re all pretty much starting at the same spot and so for us just talking about things we may not understand with the coaches or gaining some clarity when we need it I think this offense is going to be a good fit for Gino Smith if you go back in time in the hot tub time machine to when goo Smith was the starting quarterback for the West Virginia Mountaineers and had that very high potent offense they were running a scheme that was very similar to what the Seahawks are doing now with their air raid system so we’ve heard Gino he was talking yesterday about being a dropback passer and this scheme is set up for a dropback passer like Gino to succeed so I think you’re going to like the results when this all comes together for Gino Smith and this fit ultimately what Ryan grub wants to do offensively is Gino going to have a big year in 2024 what do you guys think it’s our pin commented day way in why for yes in for no is this big year for Gino or not let us know in the defensive side of the ball that’s where we find Devin Witherspoon the seconde corner out of Illinois had a very impressive rookie campaign in 20123 now looking to build upon that and a lot of the conversation about this Seahawks defense is about Mike McDonald building upon what we saw from Deon Witherspoon last season taking things to the next level and he’s already caught the eye of Mike McDonald McDonald said this in his post uh otaa press conference yesterday where do I start great feel for the game he picks things up really well but just understands ball in plays at a really fast speed at nickel there’s a lot of action in there and so when guys have that type of skill set you kind of get them around the action as much as possible he’ll do all the things he’ll Blitz play Man Zone play deep area of the field so it’s a fun position to play and ran Jenkins his newest teammate also had this to say about Deon Witherspoon speaking glowingly about the Seahawk second-year player he’s a really talented young player for him to be not the biggest guy he plays with a lot of heart out there you can see it even here at OTAs his breaking on the ball is Elite probably one of the best I’ve ever seen so strong praise there from rayan Jenkins in regards to Devon Witherspoon and was also fascinating to listen to reading the reports coming out of OTAs on Wednesday was that with The Changing of the Guard if you will in this Seahawks defense Bobby Wagner’s gone quandre Diggs is gone Jamal Adams gone Jordan Brooks some of these veterans uh that have been there for a bit that have been kind of the leaders of this team if you will the vocal guys uh what we saw so far in OTA is that Devon Witherspoon is kind of taking on that mantle of being the vocal leader if you will of this Seahawks defense that he’s the guy according to reports that’s the one bringing the juice if you will and not to mention he’s backing it up on the field with his performance even in Mike McDonald’s press conference uh Deon Witherspoon was kind of chipping back and forth with Mike McDonald having a little fun so good to see a second-year player already with the presence of a veteran an experienced player if you will Devon Witherspoon the deao leader of this defense now heading into this year and uh discussions of course will be not only the leader of this defense but the best player on this defense what do you guys think is Devon Witherspoon that guy now is he the best player on this defense or is it somebody else Leonard Williams is pretty good uh obviously Rick wen’s still around among others as well is Deon Witherspoon going to be the guy for this seah Yorks defense way in the comment section let us know what you think Hy for hell yes hn for hell no if Withers spoon is the best player on this defense or Not Another takeaway from what we seen so far at OTAs on the offensive line as expected an advantage for the experienced group on the o line as the younger players the likes of uh Anthony Bradford and Christian Haynes and others are going to have to earn it they’re going to have to bypass the veterans first to earn their playing time and this is the lineup that we saw for the most part on Wednesday Charles cross to the left tackle position Lake Tomlinson who the Seahawks signed from the New York Jets at the left guard spot Olu timi the second-year player out of the University of Michigan he was the youngest to get the majority of reps uh on the Seahawks offensive line M McLendon Curtis at Right Guard and then at the right Tackle Spot George Fant who is in Seattle for his second tenure with this team it’s worth noting that Anthony Bradford and Abraham Lucas were out with injuries and so this is the group that gets the advantage for now and we’ll see where things change speaking of Abraham Lucas uh Abraham Lucas still rehabbing the recovery on his knee and we got an update from Mike McDonald on Lucas’s status he said the following it’s hard to tell we’re shooting for Camp right now Abes getting at it uh getting after it in rehab so I’m proud of his efforts he’s putting in and I’ll say this depth going to be crucial going to be very important for the Seahawks offensive line we saw it last year with the injuries and how this group was so banged up right from the jump in week one when they lost Charles cross and Abraham Lucas and I am worried okay about Abraham Lucas’s knee being a lingering issue for this team and how much this goes on because here we are a second year of these knee issues here hoping and praying that Abraham Lucas is fully healthy and ready to go when training camp goes around but if he’s not will George Fant be good enough will they have enough dep depth pieces that remains to be seen but my concern level at the moment is very high right now when it comes to Abraham Lucas in that knee what about you guys what is your concern level when it comes to Abe Lucas in that knee right now scale it for me in the comment section 1 through 10 where your concern level is I’m going about an eight or nine to be honest with you I I hate to say that but that’s how I honestly feel what is your concern level let us know in the comment section below last on our takeaways from day two of OTAs there was a notable number of veterans that were absent for a variety of reasons let’s start with the list of players that did not participate DK metf Leonard Williams draymont Jones jiren Reed so uh some big pieces on your defensive line not there and draymont Jones making the transition they’re wanting him to play some Edge right now and not getting the Reps out there not great if we’re going to be honest with you uh the injury report besides what we mentioned earlier with Abraham Lucas and uh with Anthony Bradford a couple others include AJ borer Terell Dodson and Jerome Baker Dodson and Baker expect to be your starting linebackers so uh they’ll need to get involved here pretty quickly to be a part of the install of this defense especially with Dodson as the Green Dot as the uh play caller Baker rehabbing from a wrist injury right now uh um the he had surgery on that in the off season so still might be a while before he makes his return Dodson was still out there observed drills but did not participate for undisclosed reasons uh as far as that goes so there you have it that’s the
