Our coaching search is a joke, right?

This whole thing seems like a sham. They are going to hire the predetermined (ahem, Brooks hire) candidate who happens to be in-house (Wittman and Sheppard) or buddies with the GM (WUJ).

We're doing it again. Even national media knows it. Simmons mentioned it this week.

If I'm wrong, why? Links or quotes would be dope so we can chop it up.

  1. >dope so we can chop it up

lol, my brother in christ you 90s AF with that talk.

Jokes aside, yes, our coaching search is a joke. This franchise is a joke. And a lot of times this fanbase is a joke. I like Dawkins and Winger seems decent. But it just feels like we’re on the outside of the NBA looking in.

  2. Bickerstaff is available. Teddy’s urge to hire him immediately must be immense.

As for the coaching search? Does it even matter at this point? They should be emphasizing someone who has a good player development resume, but wins are a distant priority.

The bottom line is whoever comes here is just a caretaker over the tank for the next few seasons.

  3. Dawkins and Winger just fired everyone on the coaching staff [besides Vanterpool and Keefe](https://www.bulletsforever.com/2024/5/3/24147512/wizards-layoffs-brian-keefe-david-vanterpool-jahadi-white-jontay-porter-bradley-beal#:~:text=Only%20interim%20head%20coach%20Brian,of%20the%20Public%20Relations%20team.). They are about to bring in, or promote, the guy they feel is best to lead a rebuild. This is the exact opposite of an in-house hire. 95% of the house is gone.

  4. Yea it’s a joke, because we all know it’s gonna end up back at Keefe. This was always the plan.

  5. I’m a bit uneducated on the matter, but from a practical perspective what coach wants to take over a tank? Have good coaches done so? We’re clearly aiming for another top 10 and preferably top 5 pick next year, so how does a coach stay gainfully employed after succeeding at that?

  6. This whole thing feels like something they cooked up to assure Ted they’re doing their due diligence and not just giving the job to their buddy from OKC. I would be fine with it if they just announced Keefe was getting the job back in January when he was made “interim” coach but for whatever reason they want to pretend it’s up for grabs.

  7. Yup, same shit all over again. Except this time we have a gm who refuses to draft anyone who’s not from Europe. Maybe when he gets fired in 2030 we can start the actual rebuild.

  8. Does it matter though? I think the coach 3 years from now is what’s important and next year’s coach probably won’t be around then.

Edit: See guys like Flip Saunders and Brett Brown

  9. We don’t even know who we are looking at yet. Please chill out lol. At least we aren’t hiring JJ reddick.

I have a lot more faith in keefe over somebody like that.

  10. To be honest this is all irrelevant until we get our franchise guy, 2024 will be another wait see year, it’s 2025 draft where things get interesting.

  11. “hey we need you to tank the next few seasons and focus solely on developing young talent. Will look horrible on your resume but will really be doing us a solid for the long term”

Going to be hard to find a top tier coach with those parameters

  12. This is not a very attractive job at the moment. When you figure NBA coaching tenures are between 3-4 years on average and the Wizards really don’t have a bonafide superstar talent to build around, the allure for the hottest candidates is not there. That means you are looking at first timers mainly and many of them may believe an assistant role on a peaking playoff team is better career wise than this. I’m actually enthused they are taking their time and being thoughtful about the process.

  13. We’re going to win minimum 20 games next year, maximum 25, who coaches us is not nearly as important now as it is when we’re back in the playoff conversation

  14. anytime you can keep a guy who went 8-31 with a -8 net rating, you just gotta

  15. It’s fine. We aren’t ready to win games. Going with Keefe is the right decision for this year.

  16. Lol, we operating different now, if we had thrown a bunch of names in the news folk would of had a problem with that. I have no issue with how they are handling it, Keefe seems like the right guy for the tank and player development, hopefully if we get good he will be able to keep it.

  17. It’d be different if Keefe was here from the start of WUJ. They recently brought him on, and gutted the previous staff.

This isn’t the same as just holding on to pieces from years worth of rebuilding, and just promoting those guys.

I’m not exactly anticipating us to be good anytime soon, so if they believe he’s the one that can lay a foundation going forward, whether he makes it long term or not, I’m cool with it.
