Can Mike Grier Weaponize The San Jose Sharks Cap Space This Offseason?
the sharks have plenty of cap space and teams are always looking to get off bad contracts who should my Great a Target this off seon you’re locked on sharks your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day hello welcome to locked on sharks the premiere hockey podcast cing your favorite team in the Bay Area my name is JD young caretaker at the reef and also the co-host of the Western Conference Tuesdays on the lockdown NHL show um want to thank you for making lockdown sharks your first listen probably part of the lockdown Network we cover your team every day if you want to be in everyday or all you have to do is just follow whenever you get Podcast or you can watch this on YouTube as well or do both both is great and today we’re going to be looking at some of the uh contract that Mike Greer should try to Target uh this this offseason as one these sharks need to hit the cap floor and two trying to get more assets from teams who are either cap crunched or they just have a horrible contract on their books that they are trying to get rid of uh so we’re going to dig into four players which I think make sense for Mike Greer to try to Target and look at what the other teams have to potentially trade so before we get into all that do want to let you guys know that today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel make every moment more right now new customers get $150 in bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet that’s 150 bucks with any winning $5 bet visit fanduel.com lockon to get started so we know the sharks they have some work to do to get to the C floor and they have a ton of cap space right um just as a reminder the sharks are need to spend 15 million almost $16 million just to get to the cap floor the second uh most in the league only behind the Utah W mallit I think they should just go Utah W Mcall but anyway so I went through looking at some of the teams with a lot of kind of a bit of a cap crunch trying to kind of figure out which contracts would make sense and also you know kind of perusing the internet and seeing which guys kind of make a lot of sense to potentially uh trade for and the reason why you are doing this if you were my career is you’re weaponizing your cap space right the sharks aren’t going to spend all this cap space this year and they shouldn’t spend all the cap space this year uh because you are a rebuilding team and it’s pointless to spend this C like kind of Max your team out right now when you are have a lot of young talent coming up that you’re eventually going to have to pay right um if all goes well you think about it you’re going to have to pay William mcklin you’re going to have to pay mlin sabrini you’re going have to pay Will Smith you’re going have to pay Quint m um all these guys are probably going to be large contracts at some point right and that is the price of drafting High picks that you hope turn out well so um the Sharks will and should earmark some of that space But as a right now what they should do is put that cap space to work take on some bad contracts from other teams and get get something out of it right whether it’s uh prospects draft picks whatever it may be that’s what my career should be doing with all of his cap space to one get to the cap floor two add more pieces and three if you’re lucky you might be able to flip those players and get some more stuff at the trade deadline so let’s start with uh one p go um so John Gabriel pad go from the Isles uh so last season he played 82 games gam 11 goals 22 assists 101 shots on goal 1555 average ice time 4222 cor4 4416 uh goals for he has two years left on his deal at $5 million aav so five million this year five million next year um the Isles who are very much in the we’re never going to tear this thing down phase um continuing to to try to kind of ride what they have with these veterans and until the wheels fall off right um kind of very late run San Jose Sharks you could say but for the aisles though they enter this offseason they have 17 of 23 contracts with a little bit more than $6 million of cap space um and they have they do have some free agents that they’re going to have to try to design most of them are older guys but again like you’re you going they have to they’re going to need to make some cap space here soon um to to try to you know build a competitive team and the interesting thing with with the Isles is this Friday they just made a trade with the Devils where or not the Devils excuse me with the Blackhawks where they moved back two spots in the first round and then they got to basically move back two spots also traded their second round pick and then but they got two two more second round picks so trying to get some more assets for them so now they have a first round pick and two second round picks no third round pick so this could be one of two things to think about of why would they do this trade one they could be trying to restock the worst Prospect pool in the entire league but that doesn’t seem like Lou Lam’s style I think they’re Gathering assets to try to ship ship off one of these big contracts uh and again the Isles are going to continue to be this team they’re never going to die until they literally can’t anymore right that just again doesn’t seem like Lam is out to kind of go through a rebuild so I wouldn’t be surprised if move back a couple spots with your first for that first- round pick if you want to use that first- round pick to go get a high price free agent that would be very Isles likee um or high price guy out there you know Nicholas Ellers whoever you wanted to get but but using those two second round picks that you just got to package with one of your players like a John Gabriel P Gro who you want to move off of and then maybe you get back a a cheap contract type of you know it’s you get back a contract of an NHL type of player Luke cunan type not saying luk but a player like that maybe it’s a little bit more cost control guy who you have the next couple seasons and you open up a lot of cap space if this were to happen so just say the sharks get both those second round picks for again two years left at $5 million what would they be getting in in him so looking at his uh evolving hockey last year bit of a struggle for him uh 25th percentile player playing second line minutes um 25th percentile offense 41st percentile defense really good at not taking penalties uh are really good at get forcing other guys to kind of take penalties on him really bad at uh drawing penalties so I guess it’s kind of a was there but his numbers aren’t really super sexy to be honest he kind of you know plays in all situations played a ton of penalty kill would help the Sharks penalty kill there um played in you know kind of that middle between first second unit power play in second line forward so definitely a middle six type of forward uh going forward looking at his from Cory schneer all his all three zones last year’s numbers are brutal like I’m not going to like it the offensive numbers were just brutal um just his ability to generate offense his passing offensive like anything he did um was brutal with the exception of defensive Zone like retrievals he was pretty at getting the puck out of the Zone um you know kind of looking more in that that type of of situation but if you go back to the 2022 2023 season his offensive numbers were good like he was really good at creating shots uh sis per 60 he was looking at a bunch of um you know like he was good at generating offense really good at creating offense off the rush um creating deflections like kind of really good at do doing a lot of positive things but this last season his numbers kind of went in the tanks so for these sharks this kind of maybe feels like a Mel granin 2.0 right a guy who is definitely on his way out I get the contracts are the exact same here maybe doesn’t fit in of you know looking for a on a team right now maybe coming in here playing a a higher role upset trade value for him and maybe the sharks can flip him next off seon or next or The Following season after that right let him rebuild his value where he will be playing with um yes he’s gonna most likely playing with young guys like a m CBR or Will Smith or something like that but um then again though you’re also getting potentially a another second round pick or two second round picks that gives you more resources to do stuff and if we are very much on the my career should trade up from the number 14 spot into the top 10 having three or four second round picks um you can do whatever you want there it’s just trying to find the team you can basically overwhelm another team with an offer uh there I wouldn’t trade all four but you could overwhelm a team with an offer of yeah you move back five spots or whatever and then you’re getting three second round picks that you can do whatever so that’s that’s kind of if you’re your my career or if you want to trade back up into the first round at the end of the first round and move up from 33 to whatever again teams especially at the end of the first round where teams are kind of you see more movement and picks the later in the first round great spot for my career a guy that he really likes is starting to fall boom you can slide back up and go grab somebody so um John Gabriel uh Pego is somebody I would definitely be looking to try to uh get whatever you can from the aisles who again their Prospect pool is not very good but they do have some assets right now and it looks like they’re they’re going to keep trying to win until the wheels fall off this thing so uh we’ll look at two other guys here um and maybe bringing back an old friend um here in just one second it’s winner take all time in the NBA and NHL and fanduel’s giving you a shot to bring home a big win of your own right now new customers get $150 in bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet so maybe you think maybe you’re vas Gatos maybe you’re you know going with the blue shirts maybe you’re a Stars fan are rooting for pavelski to uh finally do this thing or maybe you want to see Conor McDavid lift it all pick a winner and then if they win you get 150 bucks a bit on spreads money lines player props and more visit fanduel.com lockon to make every playoff shot count FanDuel America’s number one sports book all right so let’s continue looking at uh two other guys we’re really focusing on the forwards because the sharks have a little bit more wiggle room with forwards compared to their blue line when it comes to kind of taking on these projects the Blue Line any players that they get on the blue line should be players that make an impact um not not guys who are kind of you’re you’re letting them try to figure things out the sharks have enough Blue Line issues where I’m I really don’t think trying to get a guy on a rebound type of here uh contract here makes a lot of sense for the Sharks right they they need more impact players they need more uh guys who can actually move the puck so that’s why I think with the focusing on and they also have a huge Log Jam right uh we which we’ve discussed several times here um on the blue line but focusing on forwards where have a little bit more space with 12 forwards compared to to six defenseman I think you can allow you a little bit more wiggle room to try to get some of these guys on here and see what they could do so um the next guy we’re going to look at is Vancouver Ford Ilia mckv 6 fo3 192 pound guy has two years left on his deal at 4.75 million doll aav last season 78 games 11 goals 20 assists 147 seven shots on goal play 1416 cory4 5289 goals for 5256 so why does it make sense for the Sharks Vancouver or at least for Vancouver um Vancouver does have a little bit more cap space uh compared to some of the other teams here you know they actually do need to spend a little bit to get up to the cap floor but they have a lot of questions that they still need to kind of answer they have three three defensemen who are under contract next season so they’re going to have to to revamp that um I assume they’re going to try to keep Elias lolm who they traded for this this season um if they want to keep him that’s going to be big contract so for them moving off a guy like mikev uh Ela mik I I just got it right anyway um would make sense for him the problem is uh he has a 12 team node trade list so that gives 19 other teams that he could potentially trade for or that would be on his list but we don’t know what teams the sh if the sharks are on that list or not as for Vancouver though they also don’t have a first round pick this year or a second round pick this year they do have their third and fourth picks um so you could either maybe ask for a second round pick in next year’s draft um or you could potentially ask for maybe like a B level Prospect in return um type of deal and maybe the sharks have to throw in kind of up mid to a like fourth or fifth round pick but then you’re getting a better pick and return um for him so especially again Vancouver who you know I think really came together this year but they’re going to have to they’re gonna have some questions here going forward and you’re gonna potentially have to pay Brock besser who has one more year left on his deal um you know and and if they want to keep Dakota Johnson like and they again they have three guys on defense uh signed so they’re going to have to do some work so getting off nearly $5 million would give them a ton of space uh what would the sharks get beting in in mikev uh he next slide um 56 percenti overall player 15th percentile offense 89th percentile defensively um this season played second line minutes uh second unit power play also played short-handed as well did a really good job even strength in the defensive Zone at least keeping goals above replacement expect goals above replacement down um Power Play offense really not there um Sol job defensively good job to on penalties like forcing other teams to draw to take penalties on him um does a does do some stuff positively I think generates offense his chances for 60 are really good shots per 60 when he’s on ni is really good um offensive types he’s good at creating one-timers and again creating deflections maybe not very great at getting Puck retrievals out of the Zone but I think this is a guy who has offensive skill but uh unfortunately just was snake bit this season um so he’s a guy where again maybe again two years left come in he’s going to be able to get a ton of right the Sharks do have a lot of opportuni offensively and he could be a guy who could kind of come in and do that and the sharks are going to have several Russians on the team and you know I it’s I know it’s kind of a weird thing to say but like the Russian guys kind of stick together a little bit and having a guy like Kim C on the team you know Muka Mulan on the team like there’s goingon to be a couple Russian guys here maybe he feels a little bit more at home who knows I’m just guess I’m definitely grasping for straws here so um but definitely guy who again maybe you can kind of rebuild his brand a little bit rebuild his confidence gonna get a ton of opportunities see if he can find a scoring touch again um another guy old friend the oldest of friend one of the great sharks at least for one of the greatest moments in shark’s history um barkl goodro he dominated in the playoffs uh right now 6’2 204 PBS three years left on his contract at 3.6 million uh shouldn’t say Boston should say New York Rangers Fran Chang that my bad um 80 games this year four goals eight assists 61 shots on goal play 1234 average time on Ice 3957 per Cory 4 3684 Cory uh goals for uh does have now as I’m recording it is third period of of game three uh six goals in the playoffs uh Barco goodro only uh only shows up in the playoffs so why would make sense for the Rangers so they uh one have gave him this ridiculous six-year contract which I love Barkley goodro Barkley goodro should never have to buy a drink anytime he’s in the Bay Area uh but giving a guy like Barkley good a six-year deal is just not smart business right and now they’re kind of paying for that especially as a team that has drafted a lot of high and talent uh Alexi lafer who’s also having a monster playoff uh run right now you’re going have to pay that guy here soon right and the Rangers are entering next year uh with a roster size of nine and about $33 million which sounds like a lot but then again you have nine guys under a contract going into next season um so they’re going to have to kind of rebuild their defense um you know they they have and they have decisions to make offensively on some of their guys like Capo kako needs a deal you’re going have to pay Alexa laugh uh The Following Season like his contract expires up the 2425 um you have some guy your uh Keandre Miller is going to need a new contract here so you’re gonna need some guys especially if you want to kind of keep this thing going and paying a fourth line Center $3.6 million doesn’t make a lot of sense so um goodro does have a 15 team no trade list again we don’t know who on who is not on the team the trade list and um he is beloved in San Jose and while the numbers aren’t very good as I’ll pull up the numbers here really quickly he does provide that like leadership thing that that uh we know Mike career and the Sharks kind of want so um pulling up his this season you know kind of playing between third and fourth line minutes six percentile player 44th percentile defensively great on the penalty kill which we know just scored a short-handed goal today um looking at his Zone numbers though it is all red just doesn’t generate offense doesn’t right uh we know what Barkley goodro is he is a fourth line Center who’s going to come in and um provide a lot of leadership play the right way all that all that fun stuff uh that coaches love but for the Sharks though you’re you you would be in this one I think you would have to look at getting either adding a piece because the rangers they only they have their first round picks to the next three seasons they don’t have any second round picks the next two next three seasons they don’t have any third round picks the next two seasons so you’re probably gonna have to kind of go back to the original Barkley gjo trade where if you want that first- round pick from the Rangers which is going to be one of the you know either 29 30 31 32 um you going to maybe have to throw something in so maybe you throw in like an azuis blat or a someone like that where it’s giving them some a little bit of something or maybe throw in one of your mid- round picks give them a little bit of something but then again you’re getting something way better in returns you’re getting back Barkley goodro you’re getting back a first round pick and then maybe it’s like an Azie wise blat plus like a third or fourth round pick um type of scenario where you’re taking on this contract for the Rangers but you’re getting something kind of you’re getting something really nice on the on the back end um for the Sharks I know the thought of paying Barkley because are $3.6 million for the next three seasons um doesn’t sound too appetizing but again um this team has like two guys on contract after this season the 25 26 Season and if Barkley go you’re overpaying Barkley goodove for three years that’s fine uh Because by the time his contract expires that’s when you’re going to have to C Mel bini Will Smith um Ean will be in the first year of his new contract like you’re going to have um and Market rasic contract is going to be off the books um even looking at like you’re you’re basically just G to have toas herle retain money like your your cap is going to be so much cleaner um three years from now when this contract comes off that it’s fine um so that’s somebody I again taking advantage of a team who’s or looking to to desperately get rid of this a contract like that that they shouldn’t have given in the first place um and if you can get an end of the first- round pick maybe you have to give up something maybe right maybe you have to give up something um to to get that but having three first round picks in this draft sign me up and then the first pick in the second round sign me up and then you can really be aggressive come come draft day so uh we’ll finish off here by looking at Cam Atkinson and why I think he a sneaky one here uh so we’ll get to that here in just one minute all right uh let’s finish up by looking at uh cam ainson of the Philadelphia Flyers so 5’8 176 pounds uh one year left on his contract at 5.875 million uh from the Flyers 70 games this year 13 goals 15 assists 175 shots on goal average time on 1557 was uh I know did he was press boxed a fair amount of times uh Cory 4 49.62 goals for 39.1 n so why is it why are the Flyers trying to get out of this uh because they sneaky are in a bit of a cap crunch here they actually have the least amount of cap space heading into the off season with only 500,000 uh dollars in projected cap space so um their team is for a I don’t know what the fly are they rebuilding I don’t know what they are but they’re kind of like really like there’s not a lot of flexibility on this team um for again a team that is they have like a bunch of guys who are signed this year and then they they start to kind of open up here coming up but um you know we won’t you know of course there’s a card of heart we don’t know what’s what’s happening with him I assume he’s not going to be around um anytime soon you have some guys who are like dead cap you might have you have a buyout on there with Tony D’Angelo um going into next season but like we don’t really know like I don’t know what the Flyers are are they rebuilding are they trying to reset what are they but I do know they don’t have much cap space so trying to again cam ainson who does have a 10 team no trade list so again maybe the sharks are want you know on that who knows knows um I know he’s a little bit older he’s 34 but I think there’s something here and I think um I think there is something here with with him that you could potentially be looking at as as something um positive given a maybe a fresh start here so um second line minutes last year 10th overall uh percentile player 11th percentile defense offensively 19% percentile defensively uh first line power play minutes first unit short-handed minutes was really positive short-handed uh does a good job of uh not taking penalties uh but you look at his Zone stats and like they’re really good um does a really awesome job at creating shots per 60 um chances per 60 chances uh contributions per 60 like he does a lot of good stuff offensively I think he was just a little bit snake bit offensive type like R creating offense off the rush he’s amazing at that uh deflections per 60 also amazing at that and even like his like Zone entry is maybe not where you he doesn’t do them as often but when he does them he’s really pretty good at them so I think cam ainson who’s you know maybe he comes in is given an opportunity um and then this is a guy who was like a former 40 goal scorer way back in the day um almost kind of like Kevin leank where he kind of signed it you know performed really well signed a big contract he never lived up to that contract but last year of his contract you could definitely bring him in and then if he performs well you could flip him at the trade deadline to and maybe you’re probably have to bring in a middle team to to eat uh or retain some of the contract because the sharks have no more retention slots but I I think this is a guy worth bringing in because especially for a team the Flyers who want to probably create some cap space and flexibility and they have a bunch of stuff um they have two picks in the first round this year they have two second round picks they have a third round pick next year they have two first round picks two second round picks and a third round pick so they are more than able to to pay pay the price to to move on from Atkinson so again I think you’re looking at kind of that second round pick is Mark um for them who again need to create space so they can do stuff in free agency um and then they have plenty plenty of stuff and that’s what that you um kind of have gotten from at a team that has sold a lot of pieces recently so um I think that that type of move as well makes a lot of sense for a guy who I think there’s something there that given an opportunity to play Big minutes with the sharks can hopefully rebound a little bit and then you can sell high for a guy like that uh to a contender uh hopefully so um so those are four contracts I would look at there’s plenty more guys out there of course uh we’ll kind of keep it look at as the news percolates and we get closer to the draft and free agency guys who sound like they may be on the move and looking at um why if they would make sense for the Sharks to try to attain their their contract and get something nice out of it so um that’s going to be all for today I’ll be back tomorrow we have another draft profile set up for tomorrow um our good friend Brock auton does OHL stuff so that’s you can probably figure out who we’re talking about tomorrow so make sure you guys are follow along for that uh make sure so you can follow wherever you get podcasts um watch on YouTube as well follow the show on Twitter Facebook and Instagram at lockon sharks follow me on Twitter at my fry hole till tomorrow bye friends [Music]
The San Jose Sharks have something that many National Hockey League General Managers covet: plenty of cap space. Can Mike Grier turn some of his cap space into future assets by taking on bad contracts from cap-strapped teams? Start by looking at the New York Islanders’ cap situation and why they are priming themselves to move Jean-Gabriel Pageau before the draft. Then, look at why Pageau would potentially bring to the Sharks. Next, Ilya Mikheyev’s time with the Vancouver Canucks might be coming to an end despite the Canucks cap space. Could Mikheyev be a worthwhile gamble? Next, despite Barclay Goodrow’s playoff heroics for the New York Rangers, the Rangers will need his cap space soon. Could a Bay Area reunion be in the cards? Finally, the Philadephia Flyers cap situation isn’t very rosy for a team in their position. Could Cam Atkinson be on the way out to make room?

Getting better each show. What’s up BG on the teaser?
Goodrow would be solid. I don’t want him wasting his years on us again though
It would be ironic trading Ozzy (the player drafted from trading Goodrow) for Barclay.
Thanks JD, fun one
I enjoy the videos! But 1 piece of feedback would be to pronounce players’ names properly. Pageau and Ehlers were both said wrong
