guys to hear it so we’re gonna talk about Becca senica why he’s flying up the draft rankings um if he’s even going to be there for the Sharks potentially draft uh we’re going look at timeline development and then Brock just breaks down the OHL draft class in which player how he kind of ranks them and which players sharks fan should be interested in so before we do all that do want to let you guys know that today’s episode is brought to you by fandel make every moment more right now new customers get $50 in bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet that’s 150 bucks with any winning $5 bet visit fanduel.com lockon to get started and now we bring in Brock how’s it going buddy good how you doing JY not too bad we have a fun one to talk about a rapid Riser of the the draft rankings uh one Becket senica if you don’t know who that is uh he is a 6’2 Ford with jhua 181 pounds 79 games this year including the playoffs 37 goals 63 assists with 259 shots on goal so Brock as I ask everybody what makes Becket senica such an intriguing Prospect yeah it’s it’s the physical upside it’s those physical tools right we’re looking at somebody who is far from a polished product right what you’re seeing right now even with his excellent second half even with his real good playoff performance which we’re going to get into he’s not a finished product and I think that’s what makes him so enticing is we’re seeing a rapid development curve here but there could be even a higher Peak to that and he’s a well-rounded player um who I think can continue to evolve offensively and and become even more of a consistent play driver and I think teams are looking at him and seeing somebody who could be a firstline Winger or at the very least you know is somebody that can play a really solid complimentary role in the middle six and that wide range of outcomes uh depends on you know how he develops an aswa obviously and and how he develops as a pro but there’s a lot of intriguing tools toolsy is is the best way to describe it so I mean like we we have to talk about the the the rise right uh where I think a lot of people kind of maybe had him like a late end of the first round and now I’ve seen him mocked to the sharks at 14 I’ve seen him mocked in the top 10 uh what is behind it is this is because of the playoff performance well okay so first I I think it’s important to talk about senica’s physical development so this is this is a guy who was about 510 two years ago as an ol draft pick now listed at 63 has some really good athletic blood Lin his mom was an Olympic volleyball player for Canada um this is this is an athlete right this is an athlete that’s still growing into his body and the beginning part of the year I would say the first half asosa struggled then when Cal Richie came back it really elevated the play of a lot of the generals players and senica was definitely part of that group but I think as ashaa improved as a team he really started to build confidence in him himself and and playing you know with a guy like Richie and on the same team as a guy like Richie being able to see what he’s doing and and how he’s doing it using him as an example I think was also really good for him and we sort of started to see the real Beck at senica in that second half somebody who was way more consistent in pretty much every regard and in the first half we were seeing sort of Snippets of that we were seeing flashes of it and that’s why he was still rated as a first rounder just more of of a first round right because this was a guy that we didn’t really know how everything was going to come together and second half with how good he was in the playoffs with how good he was we really saw the kind of player you he could be and still with even further development than what we currently saw as I just mentioned right so um I think that helps to explain that that rapid rise right we have a kind of player that doesn’t grow on trees those big six3 Wingers with skill with power with you know tenaciousness the two-way ability they don’t grow on trees um those are the types of guys that teams overpay for at every NHL trade deadline on the face or on the history of of the NHL I was gonna say man but I feel like that’s a bit of hyperbole no they if you go back GMS were still trading uh for those guys back then so yes ancient Greek times yeah ancient Greek times he’s big I need him yes uh so you’re just talk about quit musty 2.0 right uh guy who started the season poorly a lot of guys had question you know maybe it was because of some of the issues with the team uh maybe Quint M’s case right he was dealing with some sickness whatever it was and then had a really hot uh end to the season uh going into the draft last year you and I had a conversation about quit musty uh I’m not gonna bring up quit musty every time you’re on the podcast but this actually makes like a there’s actually like a a really tangible like oh this you have a guy who’s still figuring out his you know what he’s going to be is he just gonna come back next year and just dominate the ol like we saw Quint musty do this year yeah I think that’s very possible especially with how good oshaa should be next year as long as Callum Richie is is back and somehow doesn’t make the ABS but I think given his injury issues this year I think he’ll be back in the OHL and asosa is going to be a really tough team in the Eastern Conference he’s going to be a big part of that uh I think it’s definitely conceivable that he takes a musty or an eastn Cowen style jump as one of the ol’s elite players and I think if we’re going to compare him to a guy like musy we’re looking at in my opinion a maybe slightly more Dynamic skater uh than Quinton um and definitely a player who can I think impacted game in a few more different ways without the puck then Quinton definitely a little bit more consistent in terms of his defensive play and his physicality um and I think that’s why we’re seeing him push up draft boards compared to Quinton I feel like last year had a bit of a cap as as to how high he could climb because we’re not gonna get into it but the teams did have some concerns about the consistency of of certain aspects of his game where you know senica was quite frankly a beast in almost every regard um especially in the OHL playoffs this year until he got hurt as you mentioned yeah I mean uh watching you know I didn’t watch a ton of as watching that Series against London right of course watching Casper hton in and uh you you kind of felt like asosa if they had that that one guy that they’re kind of missing where it could have really instead of being a sweep this could have we could have been talking about a potential you know six game seven game series because of just how important uh senica has is is to ASA and going back next year was supposed to be another really good team we might see a Rec uh potential you know re uh repeat re uh they might play again next year between London and because we expect London’s just gonna Contin be good until London’s not good so yeah yeah 100% honestly at this point ashaa has to be considered H the favorite in the East next year in my opinion all right before we continue with Brock where we talk about Becket senica’s timeline and develop and then we talk more about the ol ver part of the 2024 NHL draft just need to take a quick break winner take all time in the NBA and NHL and FanDuel is giving you a shot to bring home a big win of your own right now new customers get $150 in bonus new customers get 150 bucks to bid on spreads money lines player props and more with any winning $ five bet visit fanduel.com lockon and make every playoff shot count FanDuel America’s number one sports book all right so let’s talk more about Sonica and his development here uh so as he continues to develop we know we going to be back in the OHL next year and uh I don’t know his birthday is exactly and what his AHL status will be but expect him to be in at least another year maybe two years uh in the O what do you think is he’s going to need to to work on the most as he continues his development yeah he’s an ‘ 06 so he’s gonna have uh at least a couple more years before he’s HL eligible uh the big thing is just adding strength as we talked about he’s hit that huge grossberg right so yeah the component of his game that’s probably the weakest is his balance as a skater he can be knocked off stride a little bit too easily um and that’s not to say that he’s not trying he he definitely can play that power game but uh just right now for the type of style that he wants to play you can tell he’s just not strong enough to to play consistently and you know filling out that 63 frame getting close to that 200 pound Mark has got to be the goal in the next two years before he turns Pro and I think he’s somebody that NHL teams are going to be patient with because they want him to to fully dominate the OHL before he takes that next step and um whether that means he needs AHL time I mean that’s too hard to predict at this point because he like I said he he is a a toolsy guy that we need to see how all that comes together from a consistency standpoint uh but if he hits that penultimate ceiling right the the the highest that he could possibly reach you know he is somebody that might not need AHL time because if he is able to fill out to the 63 200 pounds continue to improve his skating continue to improve you know his decision- making continue to improve the physical consistency all that comes together he’s somebody that could easily play a middle six role pretty quickly uh in the OHL and might not even need AHL time so you know I think that window is probably somewhere between like two and four years um what do you think is going to be as he makes the NHL and you know makes an impact what do you think is going to be that calling card uh trait or that kind of calling card thing with senica that makes him a special player yeah I think if if I were to sort of pick one thing that really makes him interesting and and it’s in my opinion his playmaking ability as a bigger Winger it those are are the most valuable types of we’ll call them power forwards right yeah the most common type is that power forward who can score goals by you know getting to the net by you know being a presence in the middle of the Ice by outworking defenses things like that but the ones that are truly Elite are the guys that Excel as Playmakers and can make their their linemates better not just be somebody who rides the coils of more skilled players um you obviously that takes skill too and not everybody can do that but what truly makes guys like Tom Wilson although he hasn’t been as good the last couple years but what made him so successful for uh you know a decent run there and hopefully he can get back to that level is the fact that you know he is a good playmaker and is somebody who has good vision and who understands you know um basically how to play in the offensive zone with the puck and and senica is a highly skilled player highly creative player somebody who invites pressure and is able to find open teammates they’ll they’ll take on one or two guys manage to find a way to to keep possession and open up those passing lanes for other guys on his on his line to exploit um and I think that is what makes him so exciting is you know yes he’s a good goal scorer yes he brings physicality um I think the skating is going to continue to improve it’s already pretty solid but it’s that playmaking ability that makes him so rare it’s it’s why he is moving up those draft boards because teams are going to look at him and say this is a guy that can drive play and not just be a complimentary piece yeah I mean that that makes sense right it’s I I for what you’re talking about I’m just picturing like uh you know like in basketball the guy who not only can he just drive to the net he can drive to the net find contact and then he finds the wide openen teammate for the easy three like that’s exactly you know you want those guys who can kind of build upon their games and again right you want to make find guys who can make their Lin mates easy make life easier for their Lin mates and uh sounds like senica is a potential guy that can do all that type of stuff so um in this draft class right where it’s we know it’s celebrity one I mean the sharks have all but said we’re picking actually even like in the social media they’re already like talking a lot about Ma on celb but uh in this kind of Muddy draft class like would you be surprised if senica maybe sneaks up to like number seven number eight in this this as a potential top 10 pick no not at all honestly um it wouldn’t shock me at all if he’s a top seven or eight pick I think teams really really like him that’s the feedback that that I’ve gotten that’s the feedback that I’ve read other people saying there’s a reason why he’s Rising so quickly up public boards and that’s because they’re sort of mimicking what is being said about him behind the scenes and um he is I would say along with Tia ginla you know the type of of player that teams think they can use to win games in the playoffs yep right and that’s why teams might value guys like ainla and guys like senica over guys like Berkeley Kon you know as skilled as they are as tenacious as they are that big body who also has skill it’s it’s a recipe for success in the playoffs we see it time and time again and it’s only natural for NHL General general managers to seek those players out through the draft so they don’t have to go and give up a couple or you know couple good young players from your system you know it’s it’s something that you can develop yourself and and that’s that’s the end goal and you know we saw that with why your I slowski went number one overall right because those guys are unicorns in today’s NHL and U NHL general managers want them and uh I I would honestly place money on senica being a top 10 pick at this point I I really would ah that’s that’s intriguing because I mean I again like you’ve seen you know everybody like okay I can see the Sharks you know maybe it’s kind of like late teens and then like always see the Sharks and as a potential fit at number 14 and like yeah now you’re seeing more and more guys as as at top 10 and especially you know watching the playoffs s uh you see again I’m not trying to compare him to Matthew kachuck but you see a guy like Matthew kachuck who’s a tenacious like kind of that very skilled plays a very physical me kind of gritty game at times I mean the whole kachuck family does but like that type of player you can see like why they’re so intriguing why guys rally around him because they just they’re just different dudes you know um and I totally see it with the guy like senica where we’re on draft night where we’re talking about like oh my gosh could you see Utah at like six picking a guy like him to be you know to bring in and then you pair them with some of the other guys that it makes a lot of sense especially with these teams are maybe a team like Utah who is getting close to like breaking through and then you add a guy like senica who yes a couple more years in O but once he hits the NHL like he should be ready to to kind of go right yeah he’s the type of guy that could fit in any organization you know when you’re drafting in the top 10 you’re not looking necessarily at need unless you’re breaking at Absolute Dead Heat and you’re saying what what is it that we need most in our organization what is it that’s going to help us take that next step maybe then you you start to look at positional need um as a tiebreaker but if you’re in that top 10 top 12 you’re just simply good players you’re taking the player that you think can make the biggest impact and I I said I think teams are going to look at senica and say this is somebody who we think can make the biggest impact on the line for us yeah I know I have a lot of sharks fans who like uh defenseman at number 14 no matter what like the Sharks need a defenseman at number 14 I’m like yes they defenseman at number 14 but like there’s a lot of there’s still going to be a lot of good players there and the striks are going to have an interesting decision uh when it comes to 14 and we if they have that pick if they move up whatever they do with that pick they have all the flexibility in the world but it’s going to be an interesting to see who they go there so all right guys before we continue with Brock we talk about the ol uh class that’s going into the NHL draft he kind of sacks him up which guys that sharks fans should get to know a little bit more just need to take a quick break uh let’s switch gears here really quickly and talk about the OHL because you are you are the OHL guy uh I know you very much love the OHL so let’s kind of talk about these potential first- round guys so you know we have guys like senica uh you know Sam Dickinson you have I know Zan pre like who do you think is going to be the first pick from the OHL when it comes to the NHL draft I think it’s gonna be Dickinson I know I’ve I’ve sort of seen perek and and senica in that range uh but I I think it’ll be Dickinson and then senica and then perek that would be my prediction on the order um obviously it could go any which way because these guys are all very closely ranked together at this point um but I I I think Dickinson probably goes in the top five I think he’s probably like the least I don’t know I he using this term to describe prospects but I think it’s aper the least sexy of the guys that are available in that range right you’ve got your salv who’s just physical Beast right you’ve got lunov and pre and Z buam who are just extremely skilled all three of them do have some projection issues defensively leov obviously has the physical tools but does he have the brain per doesn’t have the physical tools does he have physical intensity William you know does he have the frame to do it I think everybody has been impressed with what he’s been able to do this year um you know Carter yakimchuk is is up there um but with Dickinson you’ve got a guy who’s just so solid I I just don’t see a world where he doesn’t become a 20 minute night guy in all situations you know maybe maybe he’s not a play driver offensively like he is with London um you know maybe that component of his game you know never quite develops and he settles in as like a solid number three or four you know like a Darnell nurse or a Brady Shay or somebody on that sort of um side of things but you know on the flip side maybe he ends up as an Alex petrangelo Noah Dobson type right I think that the floor is still so high for him that a team is going to in that sort of like top five six range is going to say like look this is a guy that is definitely going to be a top four defenseman for us um it can play in the modern day game and be a good playoff performer and just be a reliable Cornerstone of our defense um the other guys have a little bit of inherent risk and I just don’t think Dickinson does and I I think that’s why you know he’ll be the first one off the board um but you know I I did say earlier that I think senica ends up being a top eight pick I could honestly see these guys being very very close like back to back to back there is really a world where you know Dickinson goes fifth sen goes six pre goes seventh or somewhere in that range six seven eight Montreal fans throw it a fit if they pick another defenseman oh absolutely yes but you but you know what I’m saying J there there is a world where these three guys could go within four picks you know uh uh in terms of a row there like maybe a little bit of Gap with one guy in between Dickenson at five and then you know you go seven eight or or whatever the order is yeah obviously Dickenson at five yeah with Montreal they might have a fit but yes yeah Dickenson feels like uh like you’re hit no matter what you’re getting at least like a solid double like you are getting an HL player who’s going to play like yeah the worst is he’s going to be a second pairing guy who plays a bajillion minutes a night and does like he does everything pretty well but maybe doesn’t have that one thing where you’re like okay this you know but yeah you’re hitting like a solid double and with a Chance of of it becoming something much better um some of these other guys who we haven’t really got a chance to to profile on here but you know guys like Henry Muse uh Luke Misa like some of these other guys who kind of maybe sitting in the second half of of the first round like how do you kind of look at some of these guys yeah so I’d say the next tier would be Liam greenre um jet luchenko is in there obviously um us as in there I’m a little bit lower uh on him maybe compared to some like contemporaries I know he’s sort of a very polarizing guy at this point um depending on who you ask I’m not sure he’s he’s a first round pick whereas green tree and and lenko I I do feel pretty confident in in being first rounders this at this point uh Merck van AER is is another guy that you know is’s in that range Ben Danford senica’s teammate with the generals I think has pushed up draft boards considerably in the second half I honestly wouldn’t even be shocked if he’s a first rounder uh one of those surprised first rounders at this point uh I’ve kind of heard a little bit about that I’ve seen read a little bit about that um I know people have been really impressed with again his play in the playoffs as well um so you know maybe the three guys that we can focus in on would be green tree um lenko and and Danford just just to to talk about him a little bit so green tree uh Jason Robertson is a name that comes to mind highly skilled if he hits it’s it’s going to be in in a top six Winger role um somebody who’s gonna put points on the board just a SK needs to get better I think we saw that at the u8s where he kind of got pushed down the depth chart for Canada a little bit um even though he was expected to be a pretty important player for the team after a really strong year with Windsor but the big ice surface was just a was difficult for him given that he his skating you know does lack some explosiveness and some Polish at this point um but I I don’t think technically there’s necessarily anything quite you know really wrong with him I think it’s more of like a conditioning strength piece this is somebody who um you know just needs to train hard W with power skating coaches and I think it’ll get there like it did with Robertson I think that’s why he’s he’s still going to be a first rounder um lenko is is a at least a quality medal six guy um you know yeah amazing name you know think think along the lines of like an Owen Beck um but I think he’s he’s a better playmaker and I think he’s uh got a higher offensive ceiling than than Owen Beck does uh but similarly a fantastic skater good two-way player um constant motor just a really solid player who who I think is gonna have a long NHL career um and then as I mentioned Ben denford the Allure there is a really solid two-way guy um absolutely cleaned up in this year’s OHL coaches poll which I think is a testament to you know how people around the game view Danford uh was first in the Eastern Conference um as the top defensive defenseman uh in there in chop blocking in there in smartest player and this is a draft eligible uh this is not you know an ‘ 05 this is an ‘ 06 playing in his second year in the league and he’s already getting those kind of blades and good Mobility good length good size um I think in the second half in particular we saw his offensive game really start to Blossom it’s not going to be his calling card at the next level um but we all know that to be a really good defensive oriented defender in the NHL we’re not talking about you know your depth guy who plays PK time we’re talking about your top four types like your Brendan Carlos um those types still need to score y Junior right they still need to be able to move the puck and and Danford really showed I think significant growth in the second half in that regard and I think teams have really taken notice and and look at him as a potential solid two-way guy who can be a good second pairing anchor I think he could I think he could sneak in in the back part of that first round he he sounds like a guy who if you have like maybe a more offensively oriented guy where he might be the perfect like partner where he can do a little bit offensively but he’s going to kind of Maybe cover some of the mistakes of your more offensively gifted defenseman does that kind of seem like a good fit for kind where he would be at yeah I think that’s a that’s a great way of describing him um yeah know earlier I mentioned a guy like like Brady Shay right and that’s sort of the kind of role that he plays yes he he can move the puck a little bit and yes you know he’s he’s not devoid of offensive skill but he knows his role is to be you know really solid defensively be that anchor um and I think teams might look at at Danford as as that kind of guy um and that’s where the Allure is all right uh we’ll get you out your last two questions so uh which guy are we as a draft community and I’m I hang out with a draft Community guys which guy is a draft Community not talking about enough as we kind of enter the the last month of the the ramp up here yeah that’s a really good question I hate to say it as like a bit of a Copo but I I feel like I just talk celebrating I think I think if we’re just gonna focus on just OHL guys I I think it’s Ben Danford um and I just mentioned him if we’re we’re looking outside uh of the OHL um I think it’s EJ Emory I think that this is the type of guy that the amateur scouting Community doesn’t appreciate as much as the NHL scouting community and I think we look at his performance in the second half of the year for the ndtp including his really strong u8s and I think teams maybe are re-evaluating that offensive ceiling uh you know I I said it earlier but he it’s not going to be his calling card but I think teams are looking at him saying oh okay some of those physical tools we’re starting to see some flashes of offensive ability here that maybe can be developed at the NCAA level um and he’s a potential Brandon Carlo type um Mobility size really improved I think his decision- making over the second half of the year just really solid rapid development and he wouldn’t shock me at all if he ends up being like a top 20 top 22 guy at the draft this year and I I don’t think enough people are talking about him as a potential first-rounder yeah and going to North Dakota State great program there uh yeah 6’3 right-handed defenseman uh that’s already 185 lbs and you’re going to go to college uh go play a college game for next couple years like that sounds like uh a lot of GM’s catnip right there so all right we’ll get you out of your last question I kind of we already kind of spoiled this but where in the draft does Becka Sena go what pick yeah uh yeah I already kind of spoiled it um geez let’s see I can’t give you over under I know you always like number I’m gonna say eight eight congrats Seattle Kraken and and the reason I said eight is because it’s Seattle Seattle has drafted out of the OHL a lot um and a lot of patience with their picks too like like at shade right you know is like uh I would be going crazy if I you as if I was a Kracken fan like why isn’t Shane right in the like in the NHL right now but yeah uh and it makes a ton of sense with how they develop their guys and they’re going to give him all the Rope he needs and then he’s going to show up in the NHL and he’s going to be really good right and and senica is the type of guy that I think can really Excel playing in the Pacific we see how hard it is to play against the top end teams there and I think they’re going to see him as a really solid potential down the line playoff guy you know who can who can battle some of those other really physical teams in that division all right Brock you said it all work the people find you buddy yeah on Twitter you can see it uh there at Brock gotton uh we are pretty much finalized our final draft that was terrible grammar we have pretty much finalized our last draft list of the year so our final draft list at mckin hockey it’ll be a top 300 as part of our draft guide um it’s pretty much done uh just putting a few extra little finishing touches on it depending on what the the team is voting on um but that one’s done the draft guide will be out by mid June probably even earlier than that my own work you can find at OHL prospects my own personal draft rankings for just the OHL um will be out very very soon um yeah that’s that’s pretty much it I assume I’m at 301 just missed the cut this year as a 20 times over AER so but it’s fine maybe next year Brock if you were if you were eligible man you would have been in there you would have you would at least been like 285 this guy can’t skate but great in the locker room you could take fck off the face like Sean Williams Scott and goon yeah you know great the locker room does sacrifices plays a full 20 foot game uh yeah that’s exactly what we need sign this guy up so uh thanks so much buddy we’ll chat again soon yeah thanks Shady all right guys hope you enjoyed my conversation with Brock thanks to him um make sure you guys go check out stuff over at mckin I know they’re they got their draft guide coming out here real soon um it’s yes draft guide season is the best but um Becka senica it’s it he looks like he may not be there for the Sharks I wonder if teams are learning uh from the lessons of Quinton musy last year who uh we all are looking at as wow how did he get to 26 to the Sharks as my career is uh lays awake at night laughing about that I assume so um that’s going to be it for me today we’ll be back tomorrow to look at the 2021 draft class kind of review their Seasons plus we’ll talk about the Barracuda goalie situations and kind of review their Seasons so make sure you guys are following wherever you get Podcast and of course you can watch on YouTube as well follow the show on Twitter Facebook and Instagram at lockon sharks follow me on Twitter at my fry hole till tomorrow bye friends
