Shota Imanaga struggles in Chicago Cubs loss vs Brewers | CHGO Cubs POSTGAME Podcast

[Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you for the [Music] [Applause] [Music] hey Chicago what do you say it’s the Cho Cubs post game podcast the Cubs lose to the Brewers 10 to six but it’s not killing our Vibes even though brags is booing us that’s right big shout out we are at Real Time Sports Bar in El Grove also known as the land of the herreras I the king of Alro it’s actually mayor Herrera is here tonight huh how about that mayor Herrera the nickname is is the exceptional community and I think we we that that came true today what happened to Makers wanted makers wanted is just that’s old business that’s the technology part makers wanted win wanted credit to all of Ryan’s family for coming out you were born here hey hey just to be recognized I was born in elro that’s even bigger than once living here like like I said yesterday you herreras didn’t like that very much like they did not like I said yesterday you were born when they like broke ground in village and they first discovered it they were still Paving Arlington Heights Road into when I was Bor L and Clark were still going through the the Western territory or whatever it’s called the all I know is I can’t wait to hit up the Casey’s gas station to get gas on my way out it’s right down the street it’s right on the corner they don’t have those in the city all right all right I can’t wait to go got to get for therapy tonight we’re getting a slice of pizza you know what you can get here tonight Cody at at real time a blue moon a blue moon you can also get it over at casy you can get it in the city you can get anywhere thanks to our friends at Blue Moon for always taking care of us and to uh everybody here at realtime sports for opening up the bar to us having a good time to the weight staff that took care of us so make sure you tip them on the way out of here yes huh uh anyways Cubs lose 10 to6 yeah that’s the bad news the bad news is sha imaga was hit around for basically the first time in his major league career what was your favorite part of the streak was it a mistake Cody I know what the chats already going to say was it a mistake to give him the extra arrest I mean listen meatball in me says that yes but I think when you when you think about the fact that coming from Japan and he I was looking at his Innings uh like his Innings per season in Japan uh you know whenever they decided to move him to move his start I was looking at the other over the weekend and I mean he he’s he’s on Pace to to break that record right and I think the Cubs were thinking about you know trying to stretch uh make sure he’s fresher in September when these games really really matter and stuff and so I don’t necessarily hate the idea that it did it the meatball in me says that you you know it’s one of those like you don’t take a guy out of his routine type thing like I don’t I don’t blame people for being upset about it I’m but I am also saying that it makes sense that they did if you’re thinking about the long term so I don’t know man like I don’t really I don’t really have an opinion on it I’ll tell you what I think it be a popular opinion tomorrow is that resting him or giving him the extra rest is a good idea certainly long term maybe picking the game against the Brewers isn’t the right time to do it that that that could be an argument I mean it wouldn’t have it wouldn’t have happened if it didn’t rain in St Louis ass ton and that’s what I’m that’s what I I part of the conversation has to be that it wasn’t like they just shut him down for 10 days like he he he did everything but pitch against St Louis on Friday right he did everything he did the whole warmup the whole pregame routine D did everything except actually pitch the game so it wasn’t like he just had 10 complete days off he still did that and they weren’t you know they weren’t going to um have him do that two days in a row probably weren’t going to have him do that two out of three days so he wasn’t going to pitch to St Louis after that and you know they chose today to to to pitch him and clearly the the results didn’t up didn’t happen but I don’t I don’t see this game as a result of him having uh rust you don’t think it was rust I I don’t think it was rust I don’t I don’t think him having um you know a turn off from the rotation uh was a was a huge contributing factor to this I think the Brewers are are a really good lineup the Brewers are a really good lineup uh even though the Cubs have shut them down starting pitching wise the last two nights or two days uh all honest with you yeah they’re a good lineup and um you know with showa and the other part of the conversation the other part of my my point where I I I can’t look at it and say like for sure this guy uh suffered from having too much rest right like you said you just said all that stuff and and he doesn’t you know he doesn’t pitch as often as he does here as he did in Japan um you know all all that stuff but then you look at what Craig counil did with this Milwaukee Brewers team he consistently found ways to get guys a couple extra days AR rest he consistently found ways to you know break the the 5day cycle of the rotation to make sure his guys lasted throughout the season this because of the fact that he did the whole warm up in St Louis and then didn’t pitch they look at that as like this is an opportunity for us to he doesn’t he’s not going to throw 90 pitches today he did he did do the work going into the game but he’s not going to throw 90 pitch just say but this will allow us to you know keep him fresher you know send him out against Milwaukee keep him fresher the guy hasn’t missed a start yet this year before that hasn’t spent time in the iil so he’s doing a lot of just the first two months of the Season pitching more than he would have in Japan yeah so I I just I I I look at it as just it was you know he’s been so great start of the year he had was at 0 or uh 0.84 ra to start the year best or uh to coming into say best in the majors among starting pitchers I’m not saying he was due for one of these games but I don’t think he was going to be perfect all season I didn’t expect him to be perfect All Season it sucked that it was against the Brewers today coming off a big win yesterday but I think it’s just a result of like the Brewers are a good lineup and they got to him like I don’t think I don’t I for me personally I don’t look at it as it’s any deeper than a good lineup got to him and make no mistake Cody they they hit him to the Brewers hit him a four and third Innings eight hits seven earned runs ER still under two for the season but imanaga had allowed just five runs all year over nine starts five runs all season seven tonight yeah so that that’s the big that was Jared Willis who’s at the game for us tonight filling in for Ryan because the mayor wanted to be here in his hometown so he’ll be back he’ll be back king the king of elro the king of el people called me wait a minute your father is the king of elro well it’s not self-proclaimed people have called me that Gary Gary ass in the chat and I was like know people have said that by the way or in Discord he said that that’s right chgo uh Discord royalty Gary Ross in the house tonight Tim’s here Gary Ross in the house Gary made the tri also here Gary despite the fact that he’s been mourning over Slaughter trade for the last you know like what is it 10 days Gary however Gary’s been wearing Gary’s been wearing only black and he’s had the drapes down in his house for like 10 days now but now he’s he’s come out and he’s ready to rejoin we got him we got him some uh Blue Moon and although we want Slaughter is taking over again yeah oh gosh also Barb are live yes we’re live bar but you know what I’m saying Cody this these were not um these were not cheap hits against imanaga they hit that two two-run Homer and I think I looked over at you and was I was like man the way this offense has been going that feels like six nothing and that was early in the game this it didn’t turn out to be that way you know like the offense actually did something today and and built a little bit on last tonight but the two runs early you just kind of got the feeling that it wasn’t going to be one of his Primo games and it wasn’t yeah he wasn’t getting a lot of swing and Miss um especially with the four seam like that wasn’t his swing and Miss pitch the splitter is but the force team got zero whs on 23 swings he’s usually getting around 23 24% on average so like just wasn’t getting a lot of whiffs with that even a lot of called strikes which is something that we’ve seen from him the splitter got a good amount of whips but still not at the level that he has with the splitter through his first eight starts so I mean another way that I look at this too is yeah I know Peralta was was good for them last night but I wouldn’t say he was he wasn’t better than Ben Brown so you know the Brewers responded tonight going up against the Cub’s best pitcher coming of the year and it’s frustrating like you said because you’re coming off the big win and you know you’d lost five in a row and now you’re back to 500 and it’s like now it’s it’s it’s try to split tomorrow which going into the series like I said on Monday or Tuesday whatever whatever day it was uh Tuesday um you know I I wanted to split this series and go back to Chicago three and a half back you have a chance to do that tomorrow and we’ll see but I I’m with Ryan I’m not worried about sha I part of I feel a little bit of both when it comes to like you don’t you don’t mess with anything whenever you’re going well but at the same time you have to think about the future especially when it comes to a guy like imaga who was on he’s been on Pace to to break a new like go over his career Hive Innings pitched in Japan and you need him to be fresh with with the you know when you know in September and I know a lot of people like well we’re not even going to be there if we keep playing like this and it’s just like at the same time though like what’s that voice I’m I’m I’m speaking like the people in the chat how’s it go again we’re not going to be there we’re not going to be there brother no and um but the point is though is that you’re still in a good spot you’re back to 500 and I know it sucks and I like I said last night I I don’t want to be 500 right now but you know we we got to we just we got to start stringing wins together and tonight was not a good a good start to go to getting a win streak going is frustrating but it’s not like it’s the end of August either like you we have some time they just got to got to get going I thought the offense was a good was probably the one good thing about tonight the offense is actually encouraging but like to finish off on Sha like I I I I think you know coming into the year because he had been so good to start the first two months year have been so good that we just kind of like oh maybe there is no adjustment period but still a guy coming over from Japan pitching in the major leagues for the first time this may be this may be you know the start of it this may be a place where okay you know the Brewers figured him out how do you adjust to it like how do you kind of you know the drawers kind of figured out your sequencing or or or the movement whatever it is right they they figured some out they were able to get to you how do you adjust back to them this is the first test of like how do you adjust back to what the Brewers did to you I and I think again it’s just he’s a guy came over from Japan he’s pitching in Major League Baseball for the first time that that’s part of it with with and not just show that’s part of it with basically every player that comes over from MB has to have that adjustment period his ER is still under two and the Cubs have won eight of his 10 starts and and let’s be completely honest here the last thing that we should be complaining about with this team is starting pitching the starting pitching has been completely like can been as good as you could have asked over the last month so month and a half really so I mean one bad start ask me if it’s if it starts if it’s more if if we get five starts of this you know like do do you want me to make your night worse no I already saw what Jake put down there I saw told mean Hawkins withdrawn from the NBA draft and will transfer out of Illinois why is brags here brags also even though he’s here spent $2 on a Super Chat saying boo we stinks which got two thumbs up BRS BRS is just here to make my life miserable and I didn’t even do anything to him I came here came on his dumb podcast it’s not dumb but I’m saying he’s dumb and and then and and then now he’s now he’s been giving me all this this Purdue illino yeah that’s tough that’s tough uh Robert Kidley he expects me to be nice to him on Friday what the hell kidly kindley kindley kindley kley with a super chat we need actual Stars we have a team of complimentary players we need to spend actual money on actual Stars stop with the Money Ball already five bucks from Robert thanks for the Super Chat well they are eighth in payroll but you know that Al that actually is just even more of a you know more of a criticism on Jed Hoyer than anything else hey I mean I you mean you’ve said it multiple times over the last week or so and you know we said it all offseason that when you know Cody bellry is your biggest signing You’re Bringing In or you’re not bringing in a bunch of other stars and not that a bunch of stars were really truly available to the Cubs this offseason right like Otani wasn’t coming to the Cubs Soto was going to take a hall that they may or may not have been able to reach there weren’t a ton of superstars available to the Cubs but when you are running out a lineup where um you just don’t have that in your lineup I mean stuff like stuff like the the way the last few weeks have gone is is possible I mean that I I know it’s hindsight but you know ju sooda would look great in the lineup man yeah sure you could and you had you had the Prospect Capital trade for man hey you know what insightful analysis I never would have known wota would have looked really good in this lineup I just one things like you I know I don’t want to I don’t want to ve I don’t want to Veer off the the topic of the show but like related to his super chat it’s like Juan stto is a superstar in this league and he’s one of the best hitters in baseball and he was available this past off season and you have the Prospect Capital to have made a trade for him or you know like you you could have sent some of these Major League guys too you absolutely could have you know what will make you feel better Cody logging on to that circus Sportsbook app here in Illinois oh yeah getting on that app and making some money because I just saw right here at Real Time Sports Bar in elro I just saw a thin crust pizza go by and I thought to myself the herreras are having themselves a good time here that looked like good pizza looked like it was going back to your table over there I might have been like good pizza I you know if they can hear me I’d hope they’d bring me some but I have a public apology for the people and it’s that I’m sorry for betting over on the strikeouts inaga today it the first time that I bet on Sha All Season it happened to be today so I am publicly uh saying it it’s my fault Barb it’s my fault that show to suck today all right I’m I’m putting my hand up and I apologize I am no longer betting on Sha the rest of the season okay uh when I bet on anything related to Cubs it will be on Circa and it won’t be anything related to sha moving forward all right Tight money line splits them tight money line splits is one reason why I go there though because they have the best odds right game strive be a minus 110 split on Cirus Sports menu unlike other sports books Jared Willis tweeted out that he was uh 368 with an Ops of 1. 1429 in his last seven games maybe Ian hap is bouncing back I I do have to say one of the pros of tonight was being here with Gary and having him to witness Ian hap have a great game with him that was that was one of my favorite parts of tonight he didn’t even hear it he didn’t even hear it he’s over there engaged he’s telling somebody about Slaughter right now hurt none of it he uh he’s been playing great man like like I said earlier I think the offense the offense took a step tonight and and he was a big part of it like he he uh started a few rallies uh in some of those Innings and again like I know those two runs in the ninth inning not who cares you’re down 10 to four in the ninth inning so maybe you don’t care about the two runs in ninth in fine but they did put up more than one or two runs four runs tonight Morel missed a home run because Perkins robbed him and Swanson missed a home run by a few feet to I was going to say those were the two biggest plays of the game was Perkins robbing Morell which was like payback to Cody Binger it was almost the same exact play in the same exact spot in the ballpark Blue Moon ballpark we like to call it uh and and then the Swanson taking it basically to the wall for a near Grand Slam and it would changed everything yeah yeah they would have taken the lead if Swanson’s ball went over the fence well it would have been a one it would have been a one-run game had he not robbed the Home Run yeah yeah no well I so to to hap cuz hap obviously had had a good game and um yeah you you mentioned Jared stat I was looking just at from the start of that Atlanta series through yesterday’s game um a 10 a 1099 Ops uh was hitting 304 739 slugging like he he’s waking up and uh you know have like we all said he would too yeah and this is something that I wrote about yesterday like even with all the bad and all the the hate that he’s been getting and all the stuff like he’s terrible hitter or whatever you’re saying right even with all that I think he came in today with a 102 WRC plus so he’s still just as an overall hitter above League average slightly above League average right and that would have been the worst Mark of his career but he was an above average hitter and and that’s with all like everyone saying how bad he’s been as a hit this year so like I I think I think for myself a lot of that was overblown I do think he struggled yeah he absolutely had it struggled and he there was a reason why he got that two game break uh in Atlanta so like it wasn’t that he was good and no one cared it was like he did have his struggles um but I think a little bit was just a little overblown and over the last week he’s really come on he’s hitting doubles he’s a couple home runs like he he’s starting to to find it he looks like as far as before the break like part of the thing was that he was he even said it Council said it like he felt in between he wasn’t seeing pitches well like he was swinging at at pitches he knew he knew he knew he shouldn’t be swinging at um and you’re not really seeing that right now you’re seeing him having better at bats the plate approach is better the consistency in the at bats even if the results aren’t there like you’re you’re seeing that with him and then you’re seeing the results come as well uh but as Cody mentioned like I was actually courage with the offense today um you know they had what I I was to hits I was too but not to be Debbie Downer and not to really pick on Ian hap that’s not what I’m trying to do sounds like he’s about to no no it’s not specific to hap but we’re talking about okay well this guy is right at League average and so and so the Cubs need to be looking beyond that now this team won the World Series and I know they do but like we need to hold them to that as well like League average isn’t going to cut it anymore with the Chicago Cubs you won the World Series in 2016 League average is what gets you a League average record 500 which is where they’re at and the reason I said League average is like that this was his this was him being bad all year right According to some people he’s he’s a better hitter than what he’s been but even then he was still League average a hitter So I myself expect the numbers to go up with the in half is what agreed and the only way they’re going to get to where they want to be is to be an exceptional at multiple positions and right now so far a lot of the bigname guys haven’t done that so far this season offensively they’ve been carried by the pitch which is another thing that I you know I look at and like Jed Hoyer has talked about in the past like you’re never going to have all nine hitters hit hot but be nice to have a couple at that’s what I’m saying it’s like the opposite has been true for the last few weeks month where just no one was hot no one was hitting well no one that’s what it felt like and so to me it was like the that whereas you’re never going to have all nine hitters hitting hot at the same time to have no one hitting at just never felt like it was going to last for a long time so now you’re seeing uh you know Ian half starting to figure it out like Christopher moral went 0 for five today but he hit the crap out of three different balls and you know one just obviously was caught was was a robbery of a home run like he he as far as the contact quality it was there and I I do think when you talk about that you have to use it as like a he’s hitting the ball well it didn’t he didn’t get the results it’s a predictor right it’s like he’s not getting the results I he hasn’t been getting results for for a little while now but he is hitting the ball well and so like as far as a predictor of he’s still taking walks he’s not chasing really really bad pitches I know he watched one go down the middle for a strikeout today that was bad um and and definitely need to acknowledge that but like he’s for the most part seeing the ball well for the most part hitting the ball well just you know going at fielders um and and and for the most part um you know not chasing and doing that kind of stuff so he’s doing a lot of things right and that’s what gives me for him confidence that things will turn but then like Dansby Swanson had a bunch of hard hit balls that know a couple that turned into outs today uh but Cody Bellinger was two for five today Suzuki two for five today we mentioned half two for four today had a couple hits last night H could have been three for four had uh you know their center fielder not made another great over the shoulder catch right like so for me it was not perfect but a better more ENC encourage offensive performance I’ll complain about one inning though all right and it’s it’s an inning they scored two runs in all right at top of the fifth inning uh Bryce Wilson still in for the Brewers right Mike tman starts it off I I think it originally was an air but it looks like on MLB a bad app they changed it to a single I think they just didn’t the first baseman didn’t field the ball uh well and he ended up reaching right then seya singles right so you got the first two guys on you got Bellinger coming up Bellinger hits one to the third base side um I believe on hits out the left field and uh tman was on third base after the seya hit so you had first and third seya ends up getting to second base on I think he stole second all right so Bellinger gets that base hit to left field I think that was uh you’re talking about when um the the the ground bought to Third Base yeah ground B third base yes I’m sorry he hits he just hits a ground ball at third base and it was really deep on the Third Base Line like he was playing back right it was an easy like if if he’s getting it out it he’s throwing it to third base and so the guy at third base ends up scoring on it they were playing back it was 7 to2 at the time right so tochman scores but seya at second base he’s coming to Third on that ground ball and he doesn’t get in there and he doesn’t even slide and that’s the first out of the inning and I felt like that kind of killed some of that momentum of that inning and I don’t know what they could have done to change that scenario maybe SE just should stay at second base on that play that way I don’t know I watched the replay and I’m I don’t hate that he ran to third I hate the fact that he didn’t slide though I I hate that I I hate the fact that he didn’t do anything to try and avoid that he he he ran out of the Baseline like it I I just that’s one of those things where I just feel like that ruins some of the momentum of that inning and then of course so he’s out at third base and so you have Bellinger in first base and one out Morel strikes out then half luckily Brewer’s air he reaches hoer walks and then they hit wisdom with a pitch and which drives in a run because his base is loaded and then one for the team yeah we were talking about if Bush was didn’t get pinch hit for that ball would have never hit anyone and then Swanson hits the flyball that would have been a Grand Slam in like three or four different Parks but whatever like I just feel like if Suzuki isn’t thrown out on the bases there the complexion of that inning is completely different and maybe they do actually make the comeback because they could they started that inning off really well so it’s like the little things like that that we’ve talked about all season that this team has to do if they’re going to win games and getting thrown out on the bases is something that we’ve I feel like we’ve seen for a long time man too much especially when you’re trying to Rally you you’re down a bunch of runs and you’re trying to put a rally together and I and then we didn’t obviously get the we didn’t have the full play in front of us we didn’t so I didn’t know exactly it didn’t look like seya took off right away kind of like he got caught in between a little bit and then as he realized it was going a little bit deeper tried to get into third um so it just felt more like a bad a bad read of the play and trying trying to make something happen but not doing it well enough um no it was a bad out and uh base running mistake that I’m not saying hurt them in that inning it’s not what lost in the game but it is when you do the little things it’s all it’s a little thing that you got to do better if you’re going to make a comeback down s to one you got to do that a lot of them a lot big plays if you’re if you’re going to come back down down where you were if you’re going to come back and rally in that game you can’t you can’t get out at third base without with uh with that’s probably mainly my biggest complaint about the offense tonight and it’s not even really at the plate it’s just on the base passs you also need big plays from your big players and Dansby almost gave you the Grand Slam that would have been the big difference did you see the Tweet today from mares Tony and drai it was a stat that he’d been working on with Andy Martinez also from mares said top six players this season by BW on the Cubs who are they shoda was number one Assad was number two Ben Brown was number three wesneski number four your top four bwar guys are all pitchers who are the only two top position players at five and six Mike there and he said and and when he comes back he needs to play night out of 10 days so that’s the situation to me my mind immediately went to well okay if Hap’s getting better and playing better in left field you’re not going to sit hap and if say it maybe you move some playing time out of say it but you’ve got Bellinger likely going to first is my thinking PCA and Center Bellinger gets a lot of playing time at first and Bush became becomes a more often occasional first base but way more often your DH well the thing is too is you can also play Bellinger in right field yes you could right and then you could DH SE yes on certain days there’s there’s different different ways to do it that’s why I was disappointed that he went down in the first place I still think there was a way to to keep him up there so it’s something to keep an eye on we put up uh Cory and bren’s really good conversation about PCA from their Sunday show on CA show Sports YouTube uh credit to me I clipped it uh so I I recommend going to listen but like everything they said like I agree with like I it’s it was like I obviously understood why they sent him down to begin with but also at the same time like he was outperforming every expectation that we had while he was here I understand they sent him back to get every day at bats but you kind of you need you need you need honestly for the defense more so I mean I feel like the Outfield defense has been fine most of the season I know Bellinger obviously and Bellinger’s been great in the game yester you know and SE has had a few bad plays but he’s also had some good plays he can be a little a bit of a just a head scratching thing where you just don’t understand but overall The Outfield defense has been fine but you could always use the someone like PCA for more than just his defense you know he like you said he was one of the he’s the one of the top five players in war on this team right now and he’s played like what two weeks 3 weeks so I uh I for me it’s he he’s got to come back soon sooner than later because I just think he provides a little bit of edge to this team that needs it he provides a lot of energy the base running every time he was on first base and he was on second base pretty quickly the guy is one of the fastest players in the league his Sprint speed is really high right like I I just feel like there’s a lot to like with what he’s got you don’t have to F play him against lefties I don’t care about that but if you want to see him I want to see him just come up and provide that little spark and this comes back I was talking to our friend Tim and and Gary about this during the game like this goes back to my frustrations about just roster Management in season with this team we have the second best farm system in all baseball and we ain’t using it and you FAA to Strada sure yes you did that as G points out for mreal right so I’m just I’m I’m just very frustrated with a lot of stuff that has to do with the roster management whether it when I say that has nothing to do with guys that they signed or whatever it has to do with how they’re dealing with the roster in season that as a fan with all I know which is watching them make these moves and stuff it’s almost like they wait too long they don’t act aggressive it’s like we are at 500 right now and they are like what 8 and6 their last 20 some games or whatever like come like do something so also in that interview with the score it was on Parkinson Spiegel uh they asked them are other teams they mentioned the Cardinals and they said man it looks like the Cardinals are they constantly just bring guys up they just always have guys and are other teams more aggressive is your philosophy op y less aggressive with prospects than some of the other teams and and to some degree he acknowledged that other teams are more aggressive with their prospects but that it’s also generally just like one year or one playing season it’s not a huge disparity but maybe they are he didn’t say the word specifically but he he did basically agree with the fact that other teams are slightly more aggressive with with their prospects than maybe the Cubs are well at least someone at least a it’s a it’s a philosophy I don’t understand it but that doesn’t mean you won’t see a lot of these guys start to have an impact this season I think we’ve already seen that I I do think with Pete and you know I wrote that story um last week kind of just talking about what he learned his second s in the big leagues the improvements he made the improvements that Jed and Craig and all these guys saw that the real improvements made um you know on the field off the field at the plate in the field like you know on defense stuff like that um just all over the place real improvements but I I will say like you go to his last from May 3rd to May 19th like his last 14 games he had he he hit 194 he had a 465 or 564 Ops it wasn’t him tearing the cover of off the ball forcing his way into the lineup like when they sent him down it was like I was I was kind of like okay he’s going to go down and get everyday at bats he wasn’t really getting everyday at bats anymore and when he was was the the performance just wasn’t quite there um obviously he’s gone down to Triple A and he has just te he’s torn the cover off the ball in tripa which what he should be doing right if he’s Major League ready he should be tearing the cover off the ball right Nick madreo who everyone says is is the worst hitter in baseball right like M tears it up I hear that all the time and and you go look at what he did in Triple A when he got option last year he had like an 11 1100 was PS down there so like these guys if they are at least done with the minor leagues they should be tearing the cover off the ball and I think PCA has a bright future I think right now on this team he could be you know even if it’s a at at the minimum uh defensive replacement pinch Runner type stuff I think was basically saying if he if and when he comes back which could be soon nine out of 10 games he’s got a but that’s what I’m saying at even if it’s a minimum defensive replacement pinch Runner I think he impacts the team uh the way he’s hitting the ball if he can come up and that can translate into you know the major league Major League at bats and that’s that kind of stuff that’s huge for a team that’s looking for kind of offense wherever it can get it right now I think Friday is when he’s eligible to come back up yeah I probably lean toward expecting him to come back up at some point this weekend if it’s not Friday but you know I I do think he’s kind of playing his way back up onto the big league roster um I don’t think it’s fair to put savior expectations on the guy like I I again he wasn’t he wasn’t hitting the he was he wasn’t lights out at the play when they did send him back down so I don’t I don’t want him to come back up and everyone if he struggles if he struggles people to to think that he’s like people to to be disappointed that he’s not carrying the offense because that’s not the player he was when he left and it’s probably not going to be who he is as as uh if he does come back up however I do think he can positively impact this team he did it uh his second s in the big leagues Craig Council and Jad Hoyer both acknowledged that he did have positive impact on the team defensively and offensively and you know if and when he does come back up if it’s as early as this weekend uh you know I do think there’s there’s potential for him to really impact the team uh in multiple different ways because that’s the kind of player that he is I again I understand why they s him down they wanted him get every day at bats I just didn’t feel like he deserved to go back down there he had completely outperform expectations I know just in this small small sample size that you just told us Ryan I I understand it at the same time though when they did send him down it’s not like the rest of the offense was doing anything so like for me I thought he was doing everything well that you like with based off the expectations you could have asked for so did he need to go back to Iowa I I guess doesn’t matter doesn’t matter I’m glad he went down there with a chip on his shoulder to prove like hey I’ll be back now Joey did you we had another Super Chat that we missed Joey well I want to say I think part of that is like if if no one in the outfield’s hitting well who who can you option you can’t option anyone else down anymore like he’s the one that would have to go to Iowa so not not that it was like singling him out but if anyone’s going if anyone has to be optioned down off a team like it’s going to be him he the positive part is he’s going to get every day at bats at IA I am whereas all these other guys can’t even go to IA and I know that it couldn’t be magical cuz they need the guy like they need a infielder on the I’m talking about Outfield I know you’re talking about Outfield but like know everyone in the YouTube chat and anyone else thinking is going to say well what about magical and it’s like you would based off the position he plays you would have to send an outfielder so like I get it as much as I hate it but I’m also like related to this though it’s like Vasquez has been here for a week and a half and he has won it bat he came in yesterday had a heads up base running play to give the Cubs the lead Extra Innings and you like you’re still not I know the offense was good today but like this go like what’s the point why is he here for defensive replacement defensive defensive support role not not just defensive he’s a support role if a guy needs a day off like say say say uh uh Swanson needs a day off tomorrow I could I could Envision Vasquez starting at shortstop for the Cubs tomor I feel like the same Ro as probably play all right let me jump in here yeah you got a super chat for Joey we’ve got two we’ve got two here from stepen that I think uh you know we could take this last 15 minutes or so and and discuss and I think one of them is actually sort of similar to what we were just talking about I don’t know if there’s a really is Stephen $5 is it safe to say Jed overvalued Council Milwaukee doesn’t miss him at all do they the talent matters and that’s 100% on Jed well I I think that’s I think that’s separate things and is it is a little bit mismatched thoughts because it says jet overvalued Council but it’s but it’s on Jed so it’s sort of a backhanded shot at Council as yeah as far as Milwaukee not missing Council I don’t think you forget what your manager was saying for all those years in two months and the guy that replaced him has a lot of counts I mean that was his right-hand man so it’s a lot of that stuff was transferred over the Cubs on the other hand are getting used to a new manager there’s a lot there’s a lot of continuity going on with the Brewers right now and I think that’s that’s very benef official early in a season for any team so do they do they not miss him let’s hold on and wait and see about that but but the guy that replaced him was the obvious choice to replace him because he was so tight with Craig Council and it’s also a team that just won it’s not all the same players but they just won the division like they they did just win the division too like that help the reason that Muke to me is off to this good of a start is that William Contreras has put himself in the MVP race he’s he’s playing like an MVP caliber player do the Cubs have an MVP caliber player on their team well they might but not playing like one right now unless you were saying imaga right the only thing that you can say the Cubs have that has been consistent outside of Today Show to imaga but just the starting rotation in general has been really good for the last month right toan’s been great but he’s not an MVP c as far as offensive players the only guy that sticks out that’s been consistent from the beginning of the year till today is Mike tman and I would I would argue that Cody Bellinger more often than not has been what you needed him to be all right when healthy when healthy right and to answer his question I just don’t know how you can answer it in two months like of course I’ve always believed that the manager doesn’t have nearly as effect on wins and losses as anyone however this team with David Ross last year at this time was like seven been eight games under 500 yeah they were on the way to 10 games under 500 we they are 500 right now despite all these things have happened it is is not like the team is 10 games under 500 right now I I don’t like I don’t get it man I I don’t get it like the the the to jump to that idea already now if we’re in August and this team’s not in the playoff race and we’re sitting here you know wondering who to blame like yeah definitely probably have some blame for counseling that fact but at the same time I I put a lot of where this team is right now on the front office more than anything all right let me jump in again let me jump in again because I think we’re on the same page none of us are ready to go there with Council but I think that there probably are some Cubs fans who are getting there so I think it was good for us to address but Steven’s next Super Chat which goes right off that next point scale of 1 to 10 how pissed are you at Jed Hoyer oh wow that’s aggressive right now take that one 10 being the most pissed 10 is the most angry I mean I would say 10 is the most pissed I would put it at like I’ll let you guys handle that one I would put it at like seven for me at Jed Hoyer I don’t say okay I wouldn’t say you have to say you’re pissed at Hoyer how disappointed are you in the job that they have done five to set up this team for Success the thing is the thing is is that yeah okay five is probably Fair because we were just talking last night about how the Ben Brown trade was incredible right you’ve gotten it you the show signing looks like Ste SE like Bellinger even last year bringing in Bellinger and you fixed him right like yeah he’s made great moves but he also puts the roster together you didn’t add another bat we all said in the off season that bringing back Bellinger isn’t just going to make this offense better and I know ranking wise and everything like at the end of last year the offense was not as bad as we all felt like it was however you banked on J Gomes doing something like doing something similar offensively last year going in this year and he’s going to be 37 in a month he’s been awful I don’t think it was completely that I think part of it was hoping or expecting Amaya to take a step forward as well which he hasn’t I’m just saying hopefully offsetting that I’m not even really I’m not even going to blame him about Amaya like I I think we were all pretty content with the fact I think we’re all pretty content with them going in with this catching tanem that’s fine but you you look at the roster the the lineup across the board and you still are you were still hoping that seya was going to be more consistent and be a real run producer and in April before he got hurt he was so perhaps maybe I’m overreacting into the moment right now but since he’s came back hasn’t been a lot of that right Bellinger fine tochman is a great signing but like when you look up and down this lineup is there a real Superstar player that like like a Wan sto type player that it that puts this team over the top offensively no that’s that’s the thing we all expected a bigger off season from the Cubs last this this last winter despite the fact that we hope for Otani was that noise Luke playing with his mic I just cleared my a professional move that’s that’s clearing your throat Cody’s Cody’s level of frustration Luke said five I said five what is your number there’s a lot of nines a lot of and some tens in the chat a lot of them n eight T and and the Godfathers a 25 but but there’s some I think I think there’s some realary got a number frustration number 1 to 10 seven seven Gary SAA seven I think five is fair got Tim you got a number you got a number Tim frustration level with Jed Hoyer one to 10 five or he’s got a five I think five is fair I think eight n or 10 is just irrational and I think seven like me and Gary said is you know maybe a little bit bordering but like I think five is about as Fair as you because he also like Luke said like we have said they they have made good moves but when you talk about taking this team to the next level we were more we were we wanted more in this offseason and they didn’t do it I think what I think what uh is kind of like to sum it up is you wanted a team that on paper was a 90 plus win team should win the division well I did predict 90 wins it still could happen and I get I get that and Sh right about Bellinger signing I was right about the record last year I was right I get that and and with the resources the Cubs have they should be able to put that together most years yeah I will also counter just just plain devil I will counter you look at 2015 was that team on paper the uh the the team that not even just you know to make the NLCS just to make the playoffs was everyone expecting you know what it was was a lot of guys overplaying expectations outplaying expectations whether that’s the Chris bran of the world all those guys a lot of guys outplayed their own expectations they went on a run at the end of the season made the playoffs made the NLCS and I think part of that is is when it’s it it is it’s not always the best course of action to go into a season banking on guys to on internal improvements and guys to to some guys to overperform but just in general internal improvements it’s not always the best course of action to do that right now we’re seeing that you know I I I do think this team is better than what they’ve been right now we’re not seeing that but I do think internal improvements are coming whether that’s you know niik hor or just continuing to grow into a major league player right Dan Z Swanson should be better than as a hitter than this like Michael Bush uh establishing himself as a major league player I I I do believe in some of the internal improvements we could see from this team so I’m not comparing it to 2015 yet this team hasn’t proven to me that they can be that team yet but I will say that I will say that just in the comparison between the years I I don’t think the expectations for either team were so much different between 2015 and 20 although I think expectations changed after 2016 so while the fan base was looking at it differently in 2015 than they are now in 2024 because you won the World Series no but and you went to three NLCS what I’m saying is expecting and again said it’s not always the best course of action and they have the resources that they shouldn’t have to do that but to go into a season expecting internal improvements I don’t think is wrong I yeah no because I spent a whole lifetime as a Cubs fan watching the Cubs try to plug a hole with a guy three years $30 million Milton Bradley and you’re like what we no we were competing against nobody what do we doing there I don’t want that signing either so I think it’s a happy balance of the two you do want the farm a longer stretch of success Woodman here sorry Rango say it’s a balance of the internal improvements but you’re the Cubs you have the resources to also spend money starts it’s it’s a balance and a line that you have to be right about I mean it’s nothing this is obvious but twig is saying starters are about to agress and then the nose dive will commence not that’s obvious but but this team the starting pitching has been so extremely good that if they are somehow able to continue on this streak they’re going to win games they’re going to be buoy they might not make the playoffs they might not win 90 games but they’re going to have a chance to if they’re that good but that being said the starting pitching has carried them so far into you know even to this point and and if they really cannot afford that to happen because as as he says if that if that regression comes in then you know they might be looking at a real nose well Carter was asked that today too he was asked about okay so how long do you continue to bank on the back of a baseball card right a track record a track record he’s like well some of the proven guys I’m not worried about he’s like I’m not worried about Ian hap getting back to where he is because I’ve seen it over and over and over he’s like we have to see if the consistency is going to come from Bush from Morel from some of the younger guys some of those players and and that’s a that’s a realistic question that they’re going to have to address before the trade deadline potentially so but that that’s one the reason they’re doing it is because they want they think the longer path of success is based on getting some of those young gambl to pay off for themselves now if you want to call that cheap go ahead and call it cheap I don’t care who wants to what whatever you want to call it yeah but that’s what they’re trying to do they’re trying to get those young players to come up have an impact and at multiple positions have gambles pay off now maybe you can write the ship if that doesn’t work out at the trade deadline but it’s going to cost you a lot of prospect all that said again you you had you you could have got you could have traded for Juan SoDo you could have traded for Juan I’m not saying that they should be spending an ass ton of money I’ve watched teams do it and it not work all right I’m saying that being a little bit more aggressive this off season maybe signing that extra starting pitcher Maybe rating for someone like Juan sto or you I you could have done something that none of us even were thinking of right because you have the Prospect Capital with how that team how last year’s team played it clearly was a few a few pieces away from being a playoff a a real playoff team and I still think this team is a playoff team but I’m just saying like the lack of aggressiveness to really project that like we were saying that that’s that’s my frustration and then on top of the fact that you knew coming into this year that you weren’t going to play you weren’t going to you know call up Matt Shaw until August at earliest or Owen Owen Casey until August at earliest like you’re you’re saying playing all these young guys dude we’re just talking about how they sent PCA back yeah right like we we they knew that none of their best prospects were coming up in May or June and and if or April May except except for PCA we knew that we would probably see PCA but and we saw him earlier because of the Bellinger injury I thought May would have been the time we’d see PCA right obviously came up because of the injury but the as far as like top prospects in this system they weren’t going to be ready they weren’t going to be ready so the fact that they knew that and then weren’t really aggressive on the trade market or anything in the offseason outside of getting Bush which has been everything I expected it to be has been a roller coaster but mostly good like you still didn’t add that extra bat this team needed man and that that’s my frustration we all said that but as far as not playing young players the PCA thing about the slow development thing that’s starting to look more and more like an organizational thing than it was a David Ross thing which everybody sort of like now you’re starting to see that’s that’s that’s a philosophy going on but you are in reality playing Young players because they still look at Christopher Morell starting at third base as a young player Bush starting at first a young player Amaya starting at catcher a young player you got three guys in there that are at key positions that AR you could arguably say they’re pretty much all rookies like sure you know so so there are and and then you have young pitchers trying to play too I don’t I don’t know if all three of those are going to produce at the level the Cubs hoped they would talking about third first and catcher I don’t know if all three of those are going to perform to the level that’s high enough that they don’t have to do something at the trade deadline to get themselves further into this race all I hope is that the team starts winning games so I don’t have to sit here or in our studio in West Loop and talk about the failure of this year because it would be an absolute failure absolute failure if this team is not a playoff team man I I know you said 90 wins because you graduated college in 1990 or whatever it was high schoolo right shout out to prospect huh shout out to prospect I know they don’t want to hear that no dominate he started getting his Social Security checks in 1990 and I said 89 because I’m a delusional ID get I do get ARP mail I get I get mail from ARP I I I you said 90 I said 89 cuz I’m a delusional idiot whatever you said 86 our entire P P crew on this podcast said that they’d make the playoffs 85 86 wins at least right wild card team at least if they don’t do it there’s a lot of questions to be answered man and it has a lot to do with what we’ve talked about in the last 10 to 15 minutes organizational philosophy all right if that’s your philosophy fine start winning games because of it here’s uh maybe one thing to help you feel a little better um this is actually from sah Sharma no well that that that’s that’s always valid but um from sahad of sh sah of Sharma pointed this out over the athletic um and I hadn’t even gone and looked at it so I was glad he did because it kind of puts things in perspective on on a non in a non Cubs perspective uh the Brewers last year who we said won 92 games won the division they started the season 18 and9 Cubs started their season 17 and9 this year Cubs are now 28 and 28 if I’m not mistaken right the Brewers fell all the way down to 34 and 34 in mid June last year wait a minute I see a pattern and again they went the council effect they went on to win 92 games and win their division it’s not abos to abos because they are different teams they are different team but they did win how many 92 what 92 games but I I think what my message with that is just these kinds of slumps and streaks happen across the league especially if you’re not you know built like the Dodgers or the Braves like these kind of things happened um so you’re changing your pick to 92 wins I’m just saying you and sahad AR saying 92 win sure yeah okay that’s what I just to get the facts right that if that’s that’s a narrative you want to take you can go ahead no but what I’m saying is the facts get way have a good story my point is just like these kinds of streaks these kinds of of of slumps like they happen to just different teams across the league and every fan base is going to freak out as you know and I’m not saying you’re wrong for doing that because you know F want the best out of their team on a game to game basis I get that but it all if you take a step back you see that this happens to teams everywhere and if you’re a good team you can figure it out I do think this team is a good team I do think this team is a playoff team and they can figure it out and and get there I agree 100% And I think you can it’s it’s it’s easy to be a prisoner the moment especially this early on the season but I think you’re right to say look at look at what the Cubs did last year being 10 games under and you know getting back to 11 games over by mid-september and you’re right and but you talk about philosophy and I’m reading this from Sean because I think that this is why you you say they’re not teams like the Braves they’re not teams like the Dodgers but Sean writes in the comments this organization the Cubs as a unique philosophy and how does it compare to the rest of the big Market teams in baseball and I think that’s the frustrating part for some fans is that is that is that you know that exact thing is that you know for for a lot of people it doesn’t seem like they’re doing everything they can and I understand that you don’t go all into you know rebuild to spending like you’re a true Contender but I think that those are the questions that people are asking and and will frustrate some fans the ones in our chat what what is it prisoner of the moment prisoner of the moment that needs to be a shirt I’m a prisoner of the moment you never heard that one Stu Joey SP really you never heard that not on a shirt I haven’t seen it on a shirt yet have you seen it on a shirt but you’re right like look at the look at the Diamondbacks and the Rangers like you know you could say it’s not it’s too early to to write this team off obviously but at the same time look at the resources they have and it’s totally fair to be frustrated and and expect more both Sid is true and no one’s going to be happy that I said to to be patient no one in the chat is going to be happy that I that I said to be patient I guarantee it but that’s just kind of how I look at it is we’re not even at the end of May yet like it’s May 29th we have a couple more days in May just a long season to go again as I said good team teams figure it out I do think this is a good team and and and we’ll be at at the end of the season we’ll be right there in the mix of it and and you know I don’t know for sure that they will get there but like I I think this is a good team that can figure it out put together a good stretch and get right back into it yeah well they can start by beating the Brewers with tyion on the mound at noon tomorrow we’ll be here The Chicago Cubs fell to the Milwaukee Brewers, 10-6 on Wednesday night.

Shota Imanaga started for the Cubs but struggled to keep his recent hot streak going. The Brewers got to him early, scoring 7 earned runs on 8 hits in just 4.1 innings. The Cubs fought back with an Ian Happ home run and RBIs from Cody Bellinger and Dansby Swanson, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Milwaukee.
