the Sharks need some help on the blue line what options are going to be available in free agency your locked on sharks your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day hello welcome to locked on shark Z Premier hockey podcast covering your favorite team in the Bay Area my name is JD young caretaker at The Reef also the co-host of Western Conference Tuesdays on the lockon NHL channel thank you for making lockdown sharks your first list and probably part of the lockdown Network we cover your team every day if you want to be an everyday all you have to do is just foll wherever you get Podcast or you can watch this on YouTube as well and today we’re going to continue to look at some free agent options um and we’re going to be devoting today today’s entire episode to the Blue Line uh as we know these sharks they need some help there right yeah have Mario far coming back Mark Edward vasic you have some young guys who started to make an impact in you know guys like Henry thrund you hope is Shakira muku Mullan makes impact um right there there’s a ton of kind of names there for sharks fans but they need a guy and we’re gonna be looking at players who I think can be the guy for them um so we look at Matt Roy uh Oliver Shillington Colin Miller and Alexander kerer um so digging into all these guys why they would make sense why they wouldn’t makees sense look at how much they would cost um all that fun stuff so before we get into that do want to let you guys know that today’s episode is brought to by FanDuel make every moment more right now new customers get 150 bucks in bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet that’s 150 bucks with any winning $5 bet visit fanduel.com lockon to get started so we’re going to start with uh Matt Roy the LA Kings defenseman um who is projected out of all these guys to be the most expensive guys so a little bit of a spoiler there um so we’re going to look at what he did where he is kind of his role with the Kings um and where if he would be a good fit for the sharks so uh let’s get started by digging into Matt Roy so Matt Roy 6’1 205 right-handed shot we know the Sharks uh if you want a more balanced lineup uh Matt Roy could be your guy there 81 games this year had five goals 20 assists 135 shots on gold played just under 21 minutes a night 53.6 3% Cory 4 56.14100 isn’t where you want to be but uh the Kings have drew Dy right Drew Dy is going to and that’s going to be kind of a running theme when we talk about a lot of these players um is these are kind of the second guy kind of second bananas on their previous team um so Drew daddy right Drew daddy’s gonna get all the power play opportunities and get all that um all the way more offensive Z starts etc etc um so that’s why maybe Matt Roy’s offensive production isn’t where you would potentially expect to see it especially when you’re looking at uh his projected contract so Matt Roy though uh played firstline defensive minutes 86 percentile player 71st percentile offensively 92 percentile defensively um ton of you know even strength minutes uh like I said didn’t get a lot of power play uh only played 14 power play minutes especially again you have drew dowy um brt Clark like you have a lot of other options to go with if you’re the LA Kings um then it wouldn’t make sense to give Matt Roy those opportunities but on a team like the Sharks maybe he can do something with it um a ton ton of Shand absolute uh Stellar short-handed player uh positive there um doesn’t draw that many penalties but doesn’t take penalties so you kind of or draws a little bit too many penalties but also uh doesn’t draw as many penalties excuse excuse me um but does a good job of taking penalties um of not taking penalties so um great to see these numbers from evolving hockey looking at all three zones so Matt Roy uh in this department maybe this is where you you kind of see a little bit of a where some things may be not put together because if you look at the offensive stuff it’s pretty solid you when he’s on the ice the shots per 60 High um create is good job of creating offense but getting the puck out of the Zone I think is where he kind of struggles and that is an area where the Sharks right you they need help they need a guy who can kind of be that primary z uh Puck mover you know and looking at Matt Roy’s Zone entries per 60 they’re really low um you know his even his defensive Zone retrieval so trying to get the puck out of the Zone they’re not that great um so this might be where maybe Matt Roy just isn’t that type of fit for the Sharks because of what he’s really good at right I think maybe being the secondary option on on whereas with another Puck moving defenseman makes a lot of sense for him but looking at his um usage from so daber prospects they’re a really nice tool we can actually see how these guys are being used um for his offensive deployment and his quality of competition um so he was uh Matt Roy was kind of facing about average right so he’s getting um if you kind of look at the chart they have like if you’re in the upper left quadrant you’re you’re facing tough offensive tough competition with very little Zone starts um if you’re on the right comp uh you’re facing tough competition with a ton of Zone starts uh if you’re facing the bottom right or if you’re on the bottom right Corner you’re facing off a ton of offensive zone starts against weaker competition and if you’re in the bottom left quadrant you’re facing um light competition with defensive Zone start so uh Roy was slightly in the uh tough competition uh with not a lot of offensive zone starts so he’s kind of getting the bulk of of of that and kind of doing about average what you would expect um for or what kind of where he was was at sorry forgot to switch the slides here um so you you can really see where where Matt Roy is especially compared to like guys like brt Clark who got a lot of offensive zone starts Jordan Spence who got a lot of offensive zone starts against really soft competition um right like he’s he’s eating up a lot of these moment a lot of these minutes here um Clos for the Drew dowy who is doing more with kind of the same same opportunities here so um what’s Matt Roy going to cost so he’s projected to a fiveyear deal at $6.1 million per season as a 38% likelihood um he’s also could see a six-year deal at a B basically the same amount so they’re kind of the two most like options so you’re seeing um over $6 million a season for a guy who’s very good offensively very good defensively um but maybe not the role for what the Sharks I think need um so again if the Sharks did sign Matt Roy he would be their easily be their best defenseman on the team right um and he’s played top pair of minutes right he played 21 minutes a night last season uh would be really you know I think take a lot of pressure off a guy like Mario Ferraro uh R Roy I think would step into that topl line role Ferraro maybe kind of bumps down to a second pairing and then if you wanted to give Roy a young Puck moving defenseman like a Shakir Muk Mulan um maybe that would make a ton of sense uh where a guy like Muk Mullan who we expect to be that puck moving guy uh can maybe generat more offense and then Roy can kind of help um guide him along and and kind of cover for his offensive well his offense of Leaning so um but maybe not wouldn’t provide the impact that you’d want to see as as a puck mover um and a guy maybe getting the puck out of the zone so um and $6 million is a is a pretty hefty price tag um so I’m curious to see again what we know mik does have to spend some money this off season signing guy like Matt Roy who’s 29 uh right now I think he’ll be wins his birthday I had it up and lost it um you know he so he’s 29 right now um his birthday is taking forever to pull up so uh he just turned 29 so this will be his age 29 season so by the time this contract expires he’s gonna be 35 um and that’s a long time from now so that that is a little bit pricey uh for that type of contract especially with that length um so we’ll see that’s kind of at the end I’ll kind of rank how I I I would probably go after these guys so um before we continue and we talk about two guys who maybe uh a little bit more of low risk but H each has some potential upside um just need to take a quick [Music] break passion Drive imp patience the formula for winning championships is also what keeps your ride or die alive eBay Motors is everything you need to maintain really excited if these sharks were to go out and sign him and that has won Oliver Shillington so Shillington 6 foot 183 pound left-handed defenseman I know what you’re saying you’re rolling your eyes um the Sharks SE another left-handed defenseman like they need a hole in their head shillington’s good guys um so thing with Shillington right is he miss basically a year and a half of hockey um due to some mental uh illness issues he was had to just get away from the game for a little bit right um we’ll talk about the player he was heading to be before he left um here in a minute but this season came back um halfway through the season 33 games three goals five assists 42 shots on goal 1715 uh time on Ice cory4 487 uh goals for 43.75 so since he play really too much this year like looking at his evolving hockey card uh it’s not super impressive uh but I will show it here he like again just didn’t rack up a enough minutes was kind of plain between the uh first and second pairing minutes with with uh Calgary wasn’t getting too much power play time wasn’t getting a lot of short-handed time I think they were kind of easing him back into it especially after what had happened um offensively expected goals above replacement was positive but kind of everything else was a little bit below average that’s that’s to be expected right this guy missed you know um basically 18 months of hockey um but if you go back to his season before he left and that’s the 2122 season he was well on his way to being a top top flight defenseman um so again this is from 2122 92 percentile player 89th percentile offensively 67th percentile defensively um playing just below first pairing minutes uh even strength kind of on the power play two type of of player um def on the power play excuse me you’re not seeing much from him short-handed uh but Shillington was was well on his way to being one of those type of players does a good job of not taking penalties um and again that even strength goals above replacement just absolute Rockstar type of stuff here from him again this year didn’t have enough data to track um from you look at the all three zones but what he did uh in those that that 2122 season all three zones is exactly what the Sharks need his shots per 60 is great shots and assist per 60 like all of his offensive numbers are really good uh creating off off their Rush makes a lot of sense especially when you have guys like celebr and Smith who I think are going to be um those type of players but defensive Zone exits um Zone entries are positive defensive Zone exits uh exits per 60 in great number um exits with possession prixie insane number like off the charts Shillington gets the puck from his own zone out which is the biggest thing the Sharks need help with right is getting the puck from their own Zone know out and these are his you know going back to his 2122 season Shillington is amazing that and I don’t think that trait is going to go away right uh he’s still going to be amazing Puck Handler and that is what the Sharks really need looking at uh where he his usage this season um offensive zone deployments uh was was kind of given a little bit of soft here uh Zone starts again you’re trying to ease this guy back in especially after missing 18 months of hockey maybe didn’t really produce as much as you’d want but I’m willing to bet full training camp get him in here he could be a guy who you’re looking at as a potential steal and especially when I show you what his projected contract is going to be Oliver shingon is expected to make is projected to make a one-year deal at 1.2 million ion dollar that is 42 43% likelihood and Mike reer can sell this right come in well even if it’s like a onee $2 million whatever it is right the the money doesn’t really matter because the sharks have plenty of money but if you get him on in here in a one-year deal you could say you’re a best defenseman you’re going to get all of our power play opportunities um rebuild your brand especially because he’s 20 27 he’ll be 28 I think when the season starts get a year where you’re going to be taking all the opportunities to be be the guy and go see what you can do and then if you’re awesome maybe we talk about a contract extension you’re gonna if you have a really great season this is the ultimate bet on yourself season on a team that has no expectations you’re gonna have two young uh offensively gifted players in the lineup in celebrini and Will Smith and you’re going to be our best defenseman who going to be able to to to to kind of run the ship especially on the power of play um come in here bet on yourself and go earn yourself a fat paycheck next year whether it’s with us or whether it’s with somebody else so um I would be ecstatic ecstatic if the Sharks signed alingon because I think he is a an amazing player and I’m willing to bet that player is still in there so another guy who again very much a lowc cost type of player um Colin Miller so 6’1 200 pounds played 46 games to split between the devils and the Winnipeg Jets had four goals five assists with very nice 69 shots on goal 1542 average time on Ice Cory 4 54.55% between second and third pairing minutes 51 percentile overall player 66 percentile offensively 37 percentile defensively um played not a ton of special teams again uh he is more of a a bottom pairing type of player but has some pop with him um if you look at the past three seasons who were he’s played with Buffalo Dallas the de the devils and uh Winnipeg you’ve seen the offensive numbers but kind of still in the same uh same role right maybe kind of run you your second power play not too much short-handed time but has been okay in in that um but you are seeing positive numbers for him looking at his uh Zone kind of from how his Zone tracking um from Cory Sneider for the Devils this season uh does a good job of creating one-timers for other players but can struggle with the defensive Zone uh retrievals and getting the puck out of the Zone there but once he does get it out it’s usually pretty successful so um yeah and with him with with Miller it’s kind of the same thing where you’re getting a lot of offensive zone starts against a little bit softer competitions so he’s able to to to put up he’s making the most of his opportunities um here so Miller is a guy who it feels like you would just be throwing another name at the problem especially with all the guys who are kind of in the same boat as Miller right a lot of the the Sharks already have a ton of these like third pairing type of of players and Miller kind of feels like he’d be one of those guys but um he expected to make a three-year contract at $3 million is 31 right now so this contract would go through his uh age 34 season so Miller is not not a guy I’m super excited about but I just wanted to put him on there as a potential maybe low cost guy especially low cost at the $3 million uh for only three season so you not have a long-term commitment maybe he’s one of those guys with given a little bit more opportunity he could produce but there’s also probably a reason why he’s bounced around on four different teams in the past three seasons and hasn’t been able to stick with a team very much I think it’s because he’s probably best suited for bottom pairing minutes um and you don’t want to tie up your resources and a guy like that which he does provide offense when he’s given a chance he has provided offense but I don’t know if he if given more opportunity if he’s going if you’re going to see that offense continue to improve and provide more production or if he’s just a guy who’s best suited to be playing third paring minutes and he’s pretty good at that so uh we’ll continue by looking at uh Alexander kerer who um it’s gonna be a little pricey but but this might be the guy so we’ll get to that here in just a [Music] minute is winner take all time in the NBA and NHL and fanduel’s giving you a shot to bring home a big win of your own right now new customers get $150 and bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet maybe you like the Mavs maybe like the Celtics maybe your vamos gotos right now if you pick them to win and they do that’s 150 bucks to beted on spreads money lines player props and more so visit fanduel.com lockon make every playoff shot count FanDuel America’s number one Sportsbook all right uh let’s get into our last guy and that is uh Alexander kerer of the national predators 5’1 174 pounds right handed shot played 73 games this year four goals 16 assists with 77 shots on goal 1848 average ice time cory4 5126 goals 4 51.6 n% um so 20 points maybe not not the most sexy numbers there when it comes to the actual production but remember uh Roman UFC is plays for the PRS and last I checked he’s pretty good at hockey so Roman Yosi right much like we talked with with Matt Roy um Roman Yosi taking all the the best opportunities and deservingly so right Roman Yos is awesome and he I mean we we we watched him put eight points up on us not you know a season ago H eight points in a game if I recall correctly he’s really good and maybe Alexander kerer is a guy who once you get out from not having to you know be under the shadow of of of Roman Yosi and you are given an opportunity maybe this is a potential I don’t want to say diamond in the rof but a guy who can thrive in a new situation um looking at his uh involving hockey numbers offense isn’t the sexiest again and we’ll get to his uh his kind of usage here but 64th percentile player playing second pairing minutes 37th percentile offensively 87th percentile defensively do a good job of shutting things down uh second unit power play to first unit short-handed he’s positive in both those maybe takes too many penalties but does a good job of drawing penalties as well so it evens out there uh looking at his all three zones here um he is a player who’s really has a really positive impact especially when it comes to moving the puck does a great job offensively and creating offense um is really good at creating deflection assist um in with his passing he play off the rush can play the cycle game whatever you need him to play there um Zone entries entries with chances for 60 so when he gets the puck in the zone it’s probably going to lead to a scoring chance he’s just he’s really really good at at doing that and getting the puck out of his Zone uh I think he’s really really good in those areas as well maybe not Shillington from a couple seasons ago good but I think he’s still really good and he’s done it a fair amount of times and even the Zone entry defense is really good at limiting chances per 60 uh like even just kind of shutting things down at at the blue line so uh K’s got some really en encouraging numbers uh when you look at his Zone uh metrics usage he’s a guy who plays tough minutes he plays against tough competition and he plays a lot of he has a lot of defensive Zone starts um rosi is going to eat a lot of those offensive zone starts uh because it’s Roman Yosi and kry does a really good job at making the most of his opportunities so um yes the the actual offensive production maybe not what you want to see but Kier he’s he’s been given a lot of tough shifts and a lot of tough um uh a lot of tough starts here and he does a really solid job with those uh starts so Carrie what’s he gonna get car’s expected to to sign a contract with a new team at four years at $4.3 million he’s 27 um he turns 28 beginning of the off season so this will run through his h32 season and I think this is the guy right if you want to spend some money which is fine right the sharks have to spend some money to get to the cap floor you want to improve your defense I think Alexander kerer is the guy that you that might career should Target because I think giving some more offensive zone some better assignments right um you could see the production increase there um former like he played in the queue you know the offensive game is there I think the offensive game is still there for him he just wasn’t given a chance because again you have Roman Yosi who’s really freaking good at hockey um like if you’re that’s just good coaching to give Roman Yosi more offensive opportunities but um this this makes a ton of sense for the Sharks to get a guy like this who um worst cases he’s going to stabilize your defense a ton um playing we we’ve seen that the the matchups and the Zone starts he was got he had the toughest Ones playing with Nashville last year you kind of split that time between Ferraro and potentially and Kier you kind of you split that time between those two guys give them your your top uh your toughest matches but I think K giving him a little bit more offensive zone starts you could potentially see some really nice numbers there and maybe you pair him with a a guy like Muka Mullan who’s a little bit bigger guy um we know we project Muk Mullan to be a an offensive Puck carrying guy and I that just gives you two guys who could do that or maybe you just sign Kier and Shillington ker is your that shut down right-handed defenseman who can make provide some more offensive pop Shillington put him on the left side and everyone kind of stacks into place a little bit better and then if Shillington goes nuts you can trade him at the trade deadline you can sign him to a new contract um plenty of opportunities there but these are two guys who I think between Shillington kerer if Mike if GM Mike career if he signs one of these guys either one of them you should be ecstatic sharks fans because I think these guys could really help this sharks team this season um because you have to start building right once Will Smith and Ma CBR get here you have to start building with these young guys um and the these are your pillars and your foundations and having guys who can help just get the puck out of the Zone defensively uh would be huge for the Sharks and solve a ton of their problems um both in the defensive Zone where you’re not getting stuck back there for two minutes straight and then just getting your offense going so I like both these guys if you want a little bit more sure thing in Kier I told you understand it if you want to bet big on a guy like Shillington where it’s very much a low cost but a high reward type of player I totally get that as well so the I those are the two I put first Matt Roy who I think is a really good defenseman but I don’t know if he maybe fits what the Sharks need right now which is a a guy who can again get the puck out of the Zone he’s really good defensively and and the production has been there but I worry maybe if he comes out of that la king system he might not be the same player and Colin Miller I I think I would rather spend some money elsewhere but I just wanted to kind of bring him up as a potential very lowrisk uh type of player so that’s going to be it for me today we got plenty of good stuff coming up we got more draft profiles coming up this week we’re going to dig into the 2022 draft class of Mike Greer’s first draft class and see how those guys Seasons went um continueed to dig into free agency uh we’ll talk I think we’re g I got a fun one I’m working on between with uh about uh M celebrini and Will Smith so working on that one as well uh so make sure you guys are foll along wherever you get Podcast of course you can watch on YouTube as well uh follow the show on Twitter Facebook and Instagram at lockon sharks follow me on Twitter at my fry hole until tomorrow bye friends [Music]

After last season, the San Jose Sharks need help on the blueline. Which potential free agents could provide a boost for the Sharks and their young players? Start with LA Kings Matt Roy, who is projected to get a massive contract, and look at his stats, analytics, and usage with the Kings and if he’d be a fit for what the Sharks need. Oliver Kylington was on his way to be a star before missing 18 months of hockey. Could he be the best low-risk, high-reward candidate for the Sharks? If Kylington can refind his 2021-22 form, he would greatly boost the Sharks’ defense in the area they need it most. Then, Colin Miller has bounced around the last few seasons. Could he be an upgrade for the Sharks blueline? Finally, Alexandre Carrier has been in the shadow of Roman Josi for the Nashville Predators; why a change of scenery and a larger role could make Carrier the answer that the Sharks are looking for on the blueline?
