Two biggest takeaways:

  • Former Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen an external candidate in the running.
  • Canes are being open from the jump about this role being different in how it is a collaborative environment/decision making process vs. being 'the guy' that has final say. This has had a few people change their minds in being interested after hearing about how it will be set up (not a bad thing imo that they are being transparent about it)

  1. Kekalainen would be fine as long as he understood that he doesn’t get to make decisions.

The Canes should be able to find some old guard who has connections with GMs and agents but doesn’t have the ego to need a final say.  Hell that should be a perk for at least one of these old farts.

All else failing I think Justin Williams is actually not a bad option.  He has the right personality and mind for it.  He doesn’t have as many connections around the league but he could make them given years of experience.

  2. So….

    Lose DW to CBJ

    Get JARMO FROM CBJ INSTEAD?

Are we trying to be mediocre?

  3. Interesting about the change in the process. I would not have expected that to be on the table.

  4. It sounds like we plan on keeping a brain trust to make decisions and just need someone with relationships in the league to make calls. I’m guessing Tulsky doesn’t want the job as the face of the team or we would just hire him.

  5. Jarmo wouldn’t be the end of the world. He’s decent at trading (his acquisition of Panarin from Chicago is an all time fleece) and drafting, some of his problems seemed to be from a lack of oversight which won’t be a problem here as long as he understands and accepts the way the committee will work. And I think he’d still be with Columbus if the Babcock conundrum didn’t happen, so we just have to hope he never has to pick a coach for us lol

My number one concern is Tulsky walking if he doesn’t have the interim tag removed. Oilers are going to need a new GM and I can see them poaching him from us.

  6. Doesn’t sound like a change so much as formalizing the process that evolved around Rod, Don, Tom and Eric. I also think when it comes to personnel decisions, the ‘Canes tend to rely more on player input and feedback than is the norm around the league.
Smart to communicate that up front.
