This Detroit Lions Player Has Been TURNING Heads!
Detroit Lions Edge Matthew Betts who was signed from the Canadian Football League who had 18 sacks a one defensive player over there is with the Detroit Lions and he is already turning heads Dan Campbell has given him some praise and I’m GNA I’m going to play that clip for you guys and I’m going to give my thoughts on what Dan said and really the pathway for Matthew Betts to make the final roster so let’s begin let’s see what Dan Campbell said about Matthew Betts check this out bets um that that um I would tell you there’s there’s um there again we’re in pajamas but there’s more versatility to this guy than I think I even realized um you know there’s a couple things we’re doing in coverage with him that you know that wasn’t his deal he just got after the quarterback period and uh and we we’re asking him to do some things kind of the Sam linebacker position in base to where yeah he’s a rush but he’s also dropping in coverage he’s matching a little bit he’s and I tell you what he’s he’s uh he he’s got some pretty good hips for a big man and he can run he can run and he’s smart so um there’s there’s some versatility there and special teams yes sir see what he said at the end there is very key special teams the ability to play special teams and that is a pathway for guys to make the final roster and you got to have versatility and I just want to say this too the Dan Dan Campbell the Detroit Lions the coaching staff they always always get everything out of a player and if they can’t then usually it falls on the player they always have a a great plan for all players like if you’re good at something they’re going to find out what it is and you’re going to at least get an opportunity to that and potentially Thrive at it so for Matthew bats he is in the greatest situation possible because the the lions are going to find out what his strengths are what he can and cannot do and try to utilize him correctly and I have a bet currently with Boer that he won’t make the roster Boer thinks he can I think he won’t and by what I mean is the practice squad I don’t know if he’ll make the final roster but I think he’ll be on the practice squad and I’m sure and I just want to make this very clear it’s not be hated on Matthew Betts as a human being it’s simply looking at the Lions roster seeing the amount of the amount of talent they have and looking at this defensive line room and yeah it’s it’s not the greatest in the National Football League but they have starters and they also have guys behind those starters that are Fringe level starters there’s kind of a group of guys that are kind of in question the Josh pascals of the world you know even a guy like James Houston who’s going to be playing snaps um you you look out J Sean kamitz the kamish what can he do do and I think there’s just an influx of guys I mean even Levi who I think will be eventually cut but maai Wingo now added brri Martin at nose tackle so there’s just a there’s guys that are on the they’re kind of Fringe can play might not play and for Matthew bets the pathway to being on the final roster is certainly special teams and having versatility which Dan Campbell clearly thinks he has but the big thing is you it’s hard to take anything away when these guys don’t have pads on we’re going to find out more about Matthew Betts when training camp begins and you get to see pads and you get to see these guys competing and and you really will get to see Matthew Betts what he can do you know put him with the first team see if he sinks or swims with pads on because as of right now he’s getting all the praise in the world and I’m happy for him from a human being perspective I’m happy for him you know for him and his journey from you know being in the NFL for having a cup of coffee essentially in the NFL going to the K the CFL and and having the numbers he’s had 18 sacks is impressive I’m not trying to Discount that at all and trust me if he has anything to give the Lions certainly need it because there are question marks with Davenport being able to stay healthy in James Houston can he repeat what he did his rookie year so there is there is room for anybody to come on this roster and show out and and try and and be a contributor because the Lions will welcome him with open arms but I am curious what he looks like when he goes up against this offensive line and just competes I’m not saying go out there and dominate this offensive line that’d be unrealistic istic but can he look good will he look good when pads get put on that’s probably my biggest question and I am hopeful but at the same time I got a piece of pizza on the line or at least a whole entire Pizza on the line if he does not with Boer so we shall see whether you hate me for that or not it’s just something I do believe I think he’ll be on the practice squad and he’s somebody that I think you can Elevate if there is an injury but who knows maybe he can make the final roster what what’s your guys’s confidence in Matthew bets because not saying he’s not skilled at all I just have a lot of faith in this Lions roster as a whole and and I don’t know if there’ll be room for him but if he could play special teams there will always be room for him there will and I think for a guy like Matthew who’s very open to playing special teams anything to keep a roster spot and that’s going to be his Gateway right there to getting on this roster is helping out playing that Sam linebacker yes being able to rush the passer yes but also playing special teams but what do you guys think will he make the roster will he not I think that’s one of the bigger storylines to kind of pay attention to this off season it’s a great story it really is and if he can have success and be the next Cameron Wake great awesome I mean I love covering the Lions so I’m not going to be mad if he does make the roster I just ow Boer an entire Pizza which it ain’t the end of the world but please what do you guys think Matthew bats what’s his future look like with the Detroit Lions will he make the roster will he be on the practice squad or you think he won’t be on the roster or practice squad comment The depth at the DT position is not great and if Pascual and/Cominsky are considered DT depth, I think Betes could make the roster.
If he goes to the practice squad he will be snatched up by another team fast!
Amazingly we are getting to the point of having positions, all positions, stacked.
We're forgetting that Betts is a veteran player who has been productive as a professional football player (even if it's the CFL). We had room for guys like Romeo Okwara, Julian Okwara and Charles Harris. There should be room for him on the active roster. If he gets placed on the PS, he's probably going to wind up on another roster.
It depends how The CFL compares to college football stateside. If guy coming out of the Sec or Big ten had 18 sacks in his senior year we would be stoked to get that guy in the draft . If Betts turns out to be great in NFL as in CFL. That’s a pizza I would happily lose
A lotta cope. Betts gave up his CFL career, not to make $2500-ish a week on an NFL practice squad. He's not a DL player like Paschal or Cominsky. He's a SAM. His only competition is Houston, who was a dud after his return last year.
DC said they have him at sam LB dropping back in coverage. Which is what they tried to do with houston, which he sucked in coverage.
The Bears don’t know how to develop players ( unless they have changed) but Betts may have caught on to the plan. 18 sacks is no joke.
Betts will make the final roster as a backup DE, I expect DE rotation based on matchups this year opposite of Hutch. I do think he has starter potential but i'm not sure if it's this season. Getting acclimated to the NFL running game as a former longtime CFL vet will be an adjustment, and I believe he'll need to add a little mass and he was more of a speed technique rusher and the NFL in general has bigger dudes along O-Lines to deal with than the CFL. I think he will see a fair amount of snaps, and be productive with those snaps. And after 1 year in the NFL will be an above average fulltime starter at EDGE for us.
What scares me is they have him in coverage wtf???? Did we learn nothing from Houston have our pass rushers getting after the qb these dudes are not cbs damn it AG
Well, they need a DE besides Hutchinson who can drop into occasional coverage and cover close zones. Is this guy that guy?

If Matthew betts makes the team that would be great he had all them sacks in Canada league looking at his highlights in Canada he looked fast like the coaches are saying.
Betts getting 4.5 sacks or 1/4 his CFL total for last season, would have ranked him 3rd among the Lions team leaders in 2023. Two Lions finished tied for 3rd with 3 sacks each.
Jeff, you know I've been on the Betts believer train right from the start. This regime loves him, and that's what gives me confidence. He makes the roster and makes an impact on this team in 2024. I'm not predicting 8-10 sacks, but even being a solid player in the rotation brings a huge boost and added depth to this team.
Houston is more likely the odd man out, Betts isn't going on the practice squad. He wouldn't last 5 minutes before being picked up. The Lions have been trying to get Houston doing coverage, and now they are looking at Betts.

I think he is going to surprise you Jeff, if you have tools and the package it’s up to coaches to to bring it out! I don’t think you are giving our coaches enough credit!

Remember!!! The lions snatched him up the minute he was free from the CFL… this IS a year when the competition is unreal… Sooo with all that said DC is praising him!?!?
